Have you tried pressing whatever you have Start assigned to? I've only got the European version but if you have it set to 60Hz mode you only get a black screen where the intro video should play. But if you press start when the screen goes black the title screen comes up. (The intro video plays perfectly with sound if you select 50Hz mode on the European version)

I'd recommend you to grab the latest SVN. The blackness after Lakitu is because of the intro video, which won't reproduce correctly. Just press start and you'll get to the main menu. In-race runs slow (even slower with Dual Core enabled), very dark in OGL or very dark and with a pair of white boxes in DX9 (like some kind of checkered flag, ironically), which makes it unplayable. Haven't tested any other areas besides 50cc and the Mushroom cup, though.

I think I fixed the black borders problem in most games. For example this game, I attached a picture of how it looks in the latest revision, it has no black borders now. Currently it's only enabled if you use Stretch To Fit and don't use the Keep 4:3 aspect ratio. It may also only work when the Windowed resolution is 640 x 480, but if so it's just a bug because the Stretch To Fit option has no resolution option, it will use the internal resolution and stretch that to whatever your screen resolution is, so you don't have to specify any resolution for that setting. Unless you are using the Full Screen option perhaps, but I would recommend that at least Windows users don't use the Full Screen mode, and instead use the Full Screen button in the Dolphin toolbar. Because the only way to get out of the Full Screen mode is with F4, and then you close the entire program, so you can't change the settings while playing for example.
