No more DirectX after DX9.0. WGF 1.0 is the next generation graphics technology.

Will this affect the way code is written for emulators or will authors be able to make the transition to WGF 1.0 rather easily (Not easy...but ya know ).

Some Info On It Here!

SH** when is this going to come out?

I wonder if xbox 2 will use it.

Also, most devlopers will still use DX!

yeah of couse, ut you know the deal
since no new features are any more developed under DX API
quite soon ( 2-3) dx will die ... strange isnīt it? ^^
but thats MS
giving software which REQUIRES you to buy new hardware and is as less compatible with old standards as possible...

It's still essentially Dx10. It's the same idea just htey are stripping out legacy support.

Kanes right here.

When I saw this news on Warp2Search I thought, Oh crap! But generally, like Kane said. It's a name change with new features and some taken out ...

A name change is maybe a bit unfair

- WGF is also based on the new device driver architecture in longhorn
- No more capabilities querying - the new cards have to implement the full WGF standard
- Only HLSL shaders, probably v4.0 - no fixed function pipelines, no assembly / binary modes
- Much better compatibility between the different cards

Not so bad I think, we have to wait, till we see the API spec.

Since there won't be any legacy support, does that mean that older games won't run anymore?

no legacy support,

mmm why bother there always be stuff to make it backwards compatible or usable..
legacy support of java virtual machine from microsoft.. there is none.

great sun has made it availible for xp users.
thats yust one sample

ok win98 games don`t work perfect under xp.. there is also a option running as win95 mode.

its only like win98. microsoft wanst to stop support .. not that its not usable annymore.

all those games can be trown away.. don`t think so.
microsoft yust don`t wanne make new updates of directx.. just like windows 98 or nt4 and nt3.51 and who can blame them.

computers changes.. new hardware is generated ... powerfull toys are comming up.. so why stick with the old stuff. make new stuff.

WGF is really just Direct3D 10, because the input/sound/netplay stuff will essentially be the same as in DirectX 9. Basically its only a new rendering API for compatability with longhorn, or at least thats what I can gather.

My guess is that legacy support will be provided by the DirectX9 3d API

That's what I think as well, because longhorn comes with a full DX9.

I heard that xbox 2 was gonna use DX10 APIs. The is WGF thing is new to me.

NOTE: I don't mean to be... you know, but this thread was placed in the wrong forum (has nothing to do with Cxbx). Shouldn't it be moved?

Here is an updated article of progress with WGF 1.0. It says that version 0.99 is available right now. Being that this article is from the Inquire, an added level of skepticism comes in to play.

Anyway, here it is:
WGF Almost Completed

Only Longhorn? No sane game developer will use it then, as alot of people will stay at XP (or earlier!) Windows OSes. Not until most of the market is switched over, which I guess would be 1-2 years after Longhorn is released, will they release games using WGF.

its the same basic idea of what happened with Win Xp, most people stayed away from it till SP1 came out, but even then some people refused to use it till Win2k or 98 didnt cut it anymore. i know i was one of those people. i stayed useing Win2k until Sp1 came out now i cant use anything else.
i cant stand the sh**ty dock bar in longhorn and i cant understand why M$ put that in..
