Question for Caustik: Lan id in xbe

I've been following cxbx for some time with interest, and have recently been looking at the xbe file format for my own project (http://www.halomods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=12245).

I was wondering if you could tell me a little about the LAN key and what exactly it's used for. From what I've learnt it is used to encrypt network transmissions but more than that I don't know.
