PLEASE READ: Emulation Etiquette

I've been viewing through a lot of message boards who've created a board solely for use of Chankast users, while searching for posts regarding compatibility as I'm interested in what this Alpha can do already with what I can't test, and I've noticed something rather irritating regarding the etiquette of Emulator users.

Now, this is the first "first release" of an emulator for a console that I have witnessed with all of my attention, but I believe most of the following gripes are appliable in general.

Regarding Improper Attitude.

  • Dreamcast BIOS and FLASH.
Asking for these is illegal. When registering to this board, you agree to respect it's Rules:
    Quote:
    General "No Tolerance" Rules

    1. Discussions, Links and requests of any kind of illegal material such as warez, ISO images, ROMs or BIOS images, are not permitted.
It's bad enough that regular members/admins of this board have to remind you of this. If you wish to extract your own BIOS, read this thread.

  • "How can person B play games if we can't read GD-roms?"
First, piracy (regarding CD-images) is unsupported and illegal. See above quote. Do not discuss that here. Secondly, there are guides all over the net that can explain you how to dump your own retail games with use of your own Sega Dreamcast console, a serial/coders cable or BBA, and the proper tools. Search engines are your friends.

  • Criticism.
Criticism is always helpful IF said in a constructive manner. HOWEVER, do keep in mind that this emulator's release is:
    1. In early development. It is an Alpha, version 0.1. Expecting it to do everything the way you want it to, now, is absurd.
    2. Free of charge.
    3. Being made in the free time of it's creators. You cannot expect them to work on it as fast as you want them to. Respect their speed of development.

My Personal Gripes.
  • The eagerness of using Chankast.
I have witnessed people post threats on some board if others would not explain how to get the emulator function 100%, and major disappointments of people when they're favorite game is not fully emulated. Not to mention people getting extremely impatient over speculation of next releases.

I also witness people who switch their OS from Win2k to XP solely for the probability that it runs less games in Win2k than in XP. This while this emulator's v0.1 release doesn't run over half of the DC's games, and that most compatibility of games is already in progress of documentation in each and every board you can find dedicated to Chankast.

Other than willingness of testing: in many cases, piracy comes to mind. Such eagerness usually comes with people who want to play a DC game bad, but do not own an actual Dreamcast. These people are also the first to complain (or cry) when game "C" isn't working.
Fact remains that a Sega Dreamcast can be bought online and offline for prices far below that of other consoles right now, and that it's games have gone way down in price as of late aswell. Not only is it cheap, you'll get to run your favorite games 100%, like no emulator currently can!!!! Whoo!

    Consider it.

  • Please remain respectful towards Icarus and it's team.
The creators of Icarus have been making their emulator in their free, unpaid time aswell, and have gone through a lot more trouble than the creators of Chankast have (regarding technical documentation), which explains some of it's length of development. Not everyone, and especially not Emulator authors, writes an emulator to play games on it, but rather enjoys the challenge of creating it.

Also do not forget that some of the people behind Icarus are listed as contributors to Chankast, on the main Chanka website.

End Rant.

hummm.. interesting post...indeed..

But.. we don't need this kind of "wasted space" when we have Rules threads and moderators. or.. if you couldn't contain yourself, post it in the offtopic forums or else.

Then by all means, ignore. I'm free to speak my mind.

Oh, I would, but this thread isn't off-topic.

Annoyed?

Fine post if you ask me, most of the things listed are suited to be used as rules for *any* emulator release however

Yeah, or we could put *anything* as a sticky ? No honestly, too many stickies usually get ignored so let's keep it to a decent level!

People who won't care don't care anyway They never read anything.
They just 1) Register, 2) Ask for ROM, 3) Banned.
