I had to flash my bios for my mobo to enable SSE and to recognize it as an Athlon XP 2400+ (showed as unknown Athlon XP before .. but ran fine, but had no SSE support) .. so yeah it can depend on your motherboard.

Oh, I know what that is. Some motherboards support new CPUs via flash upgrades. They are old boards but the manufacturer figures out how to support a new chip with an old board. Nevermind me.

Never Mind i found the answer. For everyone else with this error. Your cpu has to be a P3 or a P4 or a XP AMD. TBirds wont work. :-/
well if he didnt say it why would he be dissapointed about that?

in the original post he said he had a TBird. and it would have to be a really old motherboard not to support SSE, i had an athlon xp 1700 on a KT7-RAID motherboard (which is YEARS old) and i still had SSE support.

My board is actually an ecs k7s5a. It does a similar thing to Keith's board in that it doesn't recognise it as a 2400+, it say "Athlon XP 2000mhz".

I do actually have another of the same board ehich DOES recognise it as a 2400+ so that may well support sse as well. The reason I don't use that board anymore is because i never could get it to run stable with any kind of DDR in it, whereas the one i'm using now, which is actually older i think, will run with DDR with no hiccups.

I might try swapping it back in when I get time, but if I still can't get the ddr to work in it I'll just have to swap em back again. Seems a bit of a waste of time and effort really :/

My box is a 1 GHz T-Bird compaq I bought from a pawn shop 3 years ago for 65$ I couldn't beat that price. Had a bad HD so I just replaced it and it worked. As for a bios update, you really think compaq is gonna have a update for this mobo?

Possibly, but a T-Bird doesn't support SSE.

But his slow RAM, GPU, and hard drive will be bottlenecks.

Better for him to upgrade his entire computer. For less than $700, he could have an upper-middle range computer built.

Well I got it working. Downloaded a bootable cd iso of freeDOS, added the new bios and flash util to the iso with magiciso and booted it up. Worked like a charm.

BTW, this chankast thingy is pretty impressive aint it. A full screen mode would be nice though, hehe.

Indeed they do kick ass. My favorite band!

Here's a pic of my Coppermine Celeron with SSE. I bet some people didn't know.. And another pic of my Pentium III Katmai also with SSE. I believe the Pentium III 450Mhz Katmai was the first to have SSE.
