Elite Bastards - Beyond DirectX 10 - A glance at DirectX 10.1 (http://www.elitebastards.com/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=103&Itemid=29)

Directx 10 is all shiney and new and everything, unfortunately, dx10.1 is set to be released sometime early next year. The current set date is April, which is 6.5 months away. It is going to be an update which is released with Vista Service Pack 1. So lol at everyone who bought a shiney new 8800 gtx, or two of them. Current dx10 hardware is NOT going to be compatible with dx10.1. This may come as a suprise, seeing as how we have yet to see a dx10 game released. Kind of crappy how the world screws you eh?

I figured this was relavent since alot of people seem to ask about upgrading their pc, more specifically their video card. Just wait 6 months and grab a dx10.1 card, ok :)

Again, DX10 hardware will be compatible with 10.1, MS itself made that statement. It is merely an update! Well, it is also said that DX10 cards may miss one or so features in dx10.1, but it will take at least one year to see a DX10.1 game.

Moved to hardware discussion were it belongs.

Is there actually any video cards that say they are compatible with anything except the base version number?

Well, I think his point was that, even if you bought the latest video card right now, the new stuff that DirectX10.1 offers, the DirectX10.0 cannot do, which kinda screws them up. At least on a technological perspective?

10.1 seems ridiculous. Unless there is a major change why cant dx10 cards use it. And whar dev would program for it?

On the contrary, most people who buy hardware go to a store and ask the salesman what's the best card to buy. That's when the DX10 mumbo jumbo comes in when they try to sell you an overpriced, underperforming DX10 midrange card while carefully not making the mistake to tell you a cheaper X1950Pro performs a lot better.

Did you read the artical they linked to? Only a few features will not be compatible with DX10 cards, and devs probably won't use them.

In short

Microsoft is milking the DX10 hype for all it's worth.

There seems to be some confusion here about "compability" and "compliant". Dx10 cards, hell any modern video card today will be compatible with Dx10.1. They won't be compliant though. Games won't be moving to dx10.1 as the only api anytime soon. There will be several rendering paths like current games have today. They still haven't even left Dx9c(SM3) yet(not anytime soon as well). Although I do see them moving away from SM2 fairly quickly nowadays.

meh. i wasn't planning on a new video card until the Geforce 9800 anyway. I've avoided the 8 series like the plague.
