View Full Version : No$gba v2.4c released

No$gba v2.4c some final details (mainly GUI and e-Reader related)
(*) no$gba/wifi can send/receive packets, commercial programs are still getting stuck somewhere in transmission. For example, with pictochat, slave machine(s) are realizing when a master machine is creating a chat room, but the slaves aren't sending response packets to the master. Probably due to some still undiscovered status/control bits. I've added a bunch of new info about wifi hardware in no$gba help text (debug version). Additional info on the missing bits and bytes would be very welcome!
01 July 2007 - version 2.4c
- web: updated ereader.zip package (using new bmp/raw/bin/ori/plus directives)
- ereader/a22i/japan: uses 8bit/16bit charset depending on invalid 8bit chars
- ereader/help: notes on non-vpk mode, and on z80-wait-opcodes, 5bit-card types
- ereader/a22i/jap/ori: inserts dummy-sub-titles, and z80-stub to start gba-code
- ereader/a22i: .ereader_create_bmp/raw/bin .ereader_japan_ori/plus directives
- debug: supports vert_splitter for code/stack sizing (instead outer-edges only)
- ereader/loader: supports multi/single .raw/.bin files (auto-converted to bmp)
- no$fmw: fixed dtcm/pal/oam zerofill init (memory wasn't mapped/enabled there)
- gui: added OFN_ENABLESIZING to all filemenues (win98 and up; ignored by win95)
- ereader/a22i: also creates RAW dotcode (multi-strip) (all strips in 1 file)
- debug: adjusts small-gamescreen size in nds-mode (256x192 instead of 240x160)
- bios-clone: 80x86-mode redirects nds-callback/gba-sound to rom-image (if any)
- gui: defaults .hlp window-width to correct 80 columns (not more, not less)

I've been playing that Zelda on your emulator (runs really well and graphically flawless form what I can tell), but there is an area I'm stuck at. Your suppose to actually blow on the system to blow out two candles that will open a door. Is that even possible to emulate now?
I'm shocked the thing is actually that advanced.

A summary. He:
-Fixed some BIOS emulation errors.
-Touched up the GUI.
-Put the finishing touches on the E-Reader stuff.
Speed should be pretty much the same unless the BIOS bugs were causing slowdowns. (Not likely)
Compat might be a bit better, though.

Well I have tried Spectrobes and Lost Magic sofar, which both have a crash/freeze making them unplayable and nothing changed.
edit:
Bah my cache is messing with me again...somehow I always encounter the old site...that's 2.4b again....I think it's going to take a while for me to get it again....eventhough the history of the site is updated this time.....

Hmm, was hoping some of that technobabble meant the fog would work now, oh well, every new release is a step in the right direction to full compatability. Also, when the WiFi is actually working, does anyone know if we'll need actual WiFi equipment? It doesn't seem like you should to me since doesn't it have to go through your computer and modem anyway?

Sorry DualScreenMan...eventhough the history on site has updated for me the download has not....it's still 2.4b for me....probably going to take another day or two till it changes for me.

Thanks shumi, though nothing saved for me in Zelda. The batter backup didn't work and trying to load save states result in "The rom-image has crashed" error. So gotta start from the very beginning. :(
SCHUMI_4EVER

Save States don't work in any way, shape or form for DS games sofar so it's pointless to use them as backups...it is strange though that your backup was also corrupted....

:thumb: Nice News.
Altough there are no improvements in the Emulation of the games this time, its nice to see it is gettin better and better. Im just asking myself if the next release will be without any 2D or 3D improvements either. But I guess we will just have to see. Can somebody tell me for whats the E-reader good? I know that its supposed to read gamecards for games. But i dont know any games for it and I dont have any idea how i should scan a card into the game.
Has anyone tried Animal Crossing:WW or Wario: Master of Disguise ? Due to the bugfixes in the Bios this games might be playable now.

Anyone know if Pokemon goes any faster?
it depends on your machine. in the future it will be faster of course, but for now slow pcs can't get good speeds.
I suggest ppl to buy video cards that have at least pixel shader 1.0, because probably most of effects will be using those shaders to get more playable speeds in future, vgas like the rockmanforte one will probably suffer (since there is no ps in that card) to render those effects. well, let's wait and see.
Dualscreenman
July 2nd, 2007, 01:18
Coincidentally, I have almost the exact same model videocard as Rockman. :(
GeForce 4 MX 440.
No shaders of any form whatsoever, and it sucks.
Stay away from this card. It is obsolete!
RockmanForte
July 2nd, 2007, 01:35
Must you have shaders for this emulator ? Can't be. O.o

So can I assume that I still don't need to shift into new compatibility topic mode yet? (Not complaining, but rather confirming.)
From the sounds of it, figuring out that missing link to perfecting the Wi-Fi emulation is gonna take a little bit of assistance from us. The e-reader gained the bulk of the update with the GUI and the debugger gaining updates here & there. Like I said before, it's good to see him working on all the other aspects of the NDS.
I'm kinda suprised myself that we haven't seen anyone go into a fit about compatibility yet, but maybe this is just the calm before the storm. I'm sure those one-minded people will be here soon.
SCHUMI_4EVER
July 2nd, 2007, 20:02
Well sofar it looks like it...Spectrobes still freezes, Lost Magic still crashes and Wario is still as slow as ever, so no major improvements at least...and otherwise everything still looks and runs the same aswell that I have tried (which granted is not everything I have).

Maybe there are just no guys who are upset, because we discussed enough with the last release. I am pretty happy how it goes now and I cant wait to see what will have changed when Martin goes back to working on the 2D and 3D code. Would be pretty cool if Wi-fi works soon and maybe if we can in future go online with the Emulator. Do you think that is possible guys? Depends if the NDS sends informations about the Productnumder (or anything which is unique per DS), otherwise there would be nothing in the way to connect to the Nintendo Server.

The MAC address/ Nintendo WiFi ID is stored in the firmware, so as long as you have a firmware image it shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah, but it will have to be a original one. If 3 use the same it will be a big problem then.

That's why it's crucial to have your own NDS's firmware and not share it with anyone. Otherwise, it's like 2 people trying to play the same online game with the same CD-key.

Surprising as it might be, there is not a great difference between my old 3.2GHz Celeron, 1GB RAM @266MHz Single Channel and Ati 9550 w/ 256MB than my new Athlon64 X2 4600+ @2.4GHz evaluated at 6.9GHz, 2GB RAM@667MHz Dual and GeForce 7600GT w/256MB. There were some areas (like Verity Lake) where NO$GBA would play at 51% and my new one only goes as much as 57%!
I haven't spotted any difference anywhere so far.

Could work if Wii only checked it only against the code generation algo, but since it'd be easily bypassable, let's assume it'll be checked against a list of issued codes for already manufactured and sold consoles, wich would beat such thinking.

You can see the evaluation of your processor by going to System Requirements Labs (http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/).Run a test for any game, and you will see what your processor is evaluated at.
About the slow speed in Pokemon: I have to make a correction. The game DOES indeed run a lot smoother, since it doesn't need to use frameskip to keep up. However, it seems that it is currently a no$gba issue when it comes to 3d, because where there are trees it still can't keep up even with frameskip. My guess is that on your pc too Verity Lake should paly at around 60%.
SCHUMI_4EVER

srtest sometimes gives out bogus info....a week ago my CPU was failing the Oblivion test...not to mention the test are not too good since the specs are compared to game requirements...so he could pick one and get a perfect score and another were it might only be adequate or great.
Dark Mits
July 4th, 2007, 03:33
It seems to be working fine for me. Besides, I only mentioned the page because it "calculates" what speed your processor would be if it were single-threaded 32bit (even though I doubt such calculation is easy to do).
I fail the srtest on Halo 2, because I don't have Vista... Other than that I only fail the recommended on C&C3 because it also requires Vista, and I pass the recommended test of everything else.
We went off-topic!
Sonic Rush, New Super Mario Bros. and Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time also seem to be playing the same as with NO$GBA2.4b

There is the thing that I dont think there is pretty much what the Author can do at the moment to perfect the other features. A few of them are depending on the Emulation itself too. Like the sound and micro support. Is the game slow, both of them are too. And wifi, it took pretty long till the VBALink version appeared and that is a easy connection in change to Wifi.

slowdowns aren't caused by other "features" it's just unimplemented features/ not perfect cpu emulation or by your pc (low cpu/gpu power).
