View Full Version : Missing graphics in pkmn ruby

Hi guys,
Some places in ruby have missing graphics, you can only see yourself and the background, but no actual terrain. So far only the tunnel where the guy that gives HM Strength to you and lavaridge gym had that bug, but as you can guess not seeing the gym is quite the pain in the behind. So, any way to fix this quickly?
thanks in advance
edit: also, if there is another thread on this, I didn't find it.

You have tried using Flash right?
That's all the advice as I can offer as I played this on VBA.

flash doesn't work inside gyms. And in that cave nothing happened.
I would use VBA, but I'm playing two games simultaneously to trade between them, and for some reason VBAlink doesn't work, whereas no$gba does.

I know it would take a while, but you could always keep switching the saves, at least until you get past the gym. When I say switching the saves, I mean importing your No$GBA save to VBA, getting past the part you need to, then replacing the save in your battery folder with the save generated by VBA. When switching saves between No$GBA and VBA, you need to use the No$GBA to VBA save converter, which should be found in the "How to hack your Pokemon Save file instructions" thread. Hope this helps;)

I've been fooling around with the concept of importing save games from one emulator to the other, thanks for the help on that. I have a better method though, I have a very old ruby savegame on my VBA (one I abandoned due to bad overall gameplay, but I still beat the elite 4) which I now use as reference when I need help in a dungeon.
I found out that the background that you see is a layer of fog that is in the foreground, the other layers (terrain) are behind that, it seems no$gba does not give the fog layer the correct transparency, and that is why I can't see the terrain.

Ya, that problem was definitely a transparency problem. That exact problem seems to occur in every GBA pokemon game.

I am curious about something.
Try 2.3b (THIS WILL NOT HELP WITH DS)
that's the version when 3D rear alpha was introduced (it mentions transparency so maybe it's hurting GBA games more than helping)...try playing with that option disabled.
2.3b can be gotten here
DS-Scene Downloads Area (http://www.ds-scene.net/sub_section/downloads.php?s1=B&s2=6B&showfiles=1&page=4)
This is not a definite fix, nor will it work with DS games, but I think it could help GBA games.
Sorry if my guess is wrong. I would test it myself but I don't have save game at the correct point and I don't have the patience to play just to that point.

Yes! Your fix worked perfectly! Whenever I used to play Pokemon Fire Red, there would be a gridline pattern in the background during battles. Since I just started a new game with the older version, I haven't checked an area with fog, because in Fire Red, the one area that has that is pokemon tower, and that's a ways away. But I'm pretty sure that if that one problem went away, then the other problem with the fog should go away too!
EDIT: By the way, have any big things with DS emulation happened since 2.3b? Or will I have to use 2.3b for GBA games and 2.4b for DS games?

Ok let me just repeat to make this very clear.
USING A PREVIOUS VERSION WILL !!!NOT!!! HELP FOR DS GAMES!!!
It might however help for GBA games.
The latest version should always be used for DS games. Although there is no 3D improvement from 2.4a to 2.4b.
If you have a game which uses e-reader then you will have to pick wether you can live with the possible GBA issues of a new version (2.4b onwards) or just not use e-reader. Or just alternate between the 2 versions copying and pasting the sav between the two battery folders.

hey, thanks for the hint. I would love to try that, but that site requires registration. Is there some way you can point me to a DL that is free? Otherwise I'll just try to register at that site.

O damn sorry I am always logged in since I became a member so I forgot...it's the only site I could think of which hosts all the versions.
I don't know of another site, I would help you out and search, but the F1 delayed broadcast is starting soon and I wanna watch. Just try google.

just one more question about that old version - link and save state compability is given? Means I can use my savegame and link it to my second savegame just like before?
bobrocks95
June 11th, 2007, 02:35
Of course. The old version's only difference is in DS emulation. (Except for e-reader)

It should be fine. Alternatively you can do te also just use 2.3b for the foggy areas and then switch back again (by copying and pasting your sav between the two battery folders).
Please remember I am only guessing here, it makes logical sense that this should be possible or could be possible, I am not basing this on any testing or technical knowledge. It's only a guess.

I appreciate all the help. My search through the folds of the 'net has been unsuccessful, which means I'm going to register at that page you gave me if it weren't so awfully so slow ;)
edit: okay, so I got the right version, am checking the fog right know. Linking doesn't work very well, for some reason the battery save gets overwritten by the second game save.

O sorry....I thought you had found it
I guess I should suggest to the sites creator to ask his host to reboot again.
Here's something I just found for you.
No$gba 2.3b×îÇ¿µÄGBA/NDSÄ£ÄâÆ÷[KLKÄ£ÄâÆ÷Ä£ÄâÓÎÏ·ÐÂÎÅ×ÊѶÍøÂÛ̳] (http://www.klkemu.net/bbs/dispbbs.asp?boardID=2&ID=3279&page=1)
(It's the no$gba-w.zip link)
((I keep on having to edit cuz the sites I find provide content not allowed on this board))
I really am sorry for abandoning you like that.
It's just a guess anyways, I really hope it works after all that trouble.

Ok, ...I have not seen anything much related to saves so it had looked like it might work.

Just thought I'd throw this out there, but.. You did rename the second save .sv2, right?

I just copied the save of the first game over, I don't have a second game at the moment (will start it when I finish the first one). I have some crappy muling second save that I didn't bother copy, so I need to copy that as well because he won't create the file himself (or just use a blank one)?
hey, me again -
The old version ain't helping. I switched the new transparency option on and the fog is still not transparent. I saved the options, restarted the game, and all that. I just checked the fog on Mt. Pyre, no idea if the fog in that tunnel works, though.

No No, I did not mean turn that on, that's the way it's been since that version, I meant try playing with it off.
I could have sent you back to a further version where there was not even this test-implementation, but too far back is also not good as eventhough the main focus has been DS stuff for a while, there have been one or two GBA additions aswell.

June 13th, 2007, 01:38
okay, I switched it to off and it still doesn't work. Will download some older versions and see if some of those work. Sorry again for being such an idiot when it comes to such a small thing, other people would just not bother to fix it at all.
okay, this is pissing me off. Apparently underwater caves have some sort of fog overlay as well, cuz I can't see jack in them. I read through the description to change my savegame from no$gba to VBA, but there it says that stuff applies to Pokemon Pearl/Diamond/NDS games. That Converter gives me a strange error and criticals when I try to click configure anyway.
So, any hope there is a working no$gba version out there or is there a working savegame conversion from no$gba to vba?
And yes, I'm sorry for putting this on you again. You have been great.
SCHUMI_4EVER
June 13th, 2007, 12:01
No I am sorry, if that did not work then there is no no$gba version which does...as I said it was just a guess.
Unfortunately I have now reached the end of my guesses and knowledge, someone else will have to help you with converting your saves if it's even possible.
I am sorry for not being able to help more and providing you with false hope in the first place.

You could always PM him aswell.
I think he was talking about the topic which you already checked though.

Ya, um, 2.3b definitely helped me.. Did you make sure to turn the 3D Rear Alpha Layer off, then choose save options, then exit and reopen the emulator? I remember the first time I tried No$GBA, I didn't know that you had to hit that, so I'd just have to change my settings every time I opened the emu, and as I'm sure you know, that takes quite a while.
