View Full Version : responsibility for poke prl/dmnd running so slowly/choppy on no$

I hadn't realized this till now but a huge chunk of the problem with poke diam/prl is actually the bios files ! did anyone know this?
While testing out zelda: link to the past [GBA] when i would run the rom before addimg the bios to the test folder , the rom would run very smoothly............before it crashed and then very choppy after using the gba bios , to counteract the specific point in the introduction of the game when the rom image would crash.
but before the rom crashed (5 minutes after starting the preamble of the game)
the rom (without the bios) would run very smoothly. after adding bios it would run super choppy, and none of the regular tips/tricks would improved the speed.
im sure 'now' everyone will say "oh yea i knew that" but its a ray of home towards having poke d/p run more smoothly in the future. if the bios files can be modified somehow maybe it would complement a newer no$ version in resolving the speed issues.
i dont know about you but even with all the tips/tricks humanly possible in making poke d/p run more smoothly, even with all that its still running very slowly on my PC. so much so that iv decided to wait till a newer no$ comes out before starting to play poke d/p
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
p.s.
for those who just cant wait, and are running win XP, heres a speed tip.
change the theme of windows from the fancy xP graphics to the more simple "windows classic" theme. be sure if you do so, to also change the taskBar properties from start menu, to "classic start menu"
and i dont do this, but if one want to give the no$ as much juice as possible, taking off the wallpaper and leaving it blank, and uninstalling screensavers, and putting "none" on the screenSaver options will also help.
personally
i have the windows theme to classic, but i use a wallpaper, and dont have a heavy screensaver, i have my wallpaper as my screensaver. so when the screensaver activates you see the icons go away and you just see my wallpaper pic in full screen.
if you wana know how 2 do this just PM me.

There's a pretty simple reason for this. If there's no BIOS in the folder, then no$gba emulates the bios calls with its own functions, which are a lot faster than the bios one's, as it doesn't have the same restrictions (the bios can only copy 4 bytes at once, for example).
Modifying the bios isn't an option, as its relatively optimised and some games check the crc.

dude what planet are you on? or what computer do you have. EVERYONE has experience slow emulation with pokemon d/p. miretank's response confirms what you seem to be oblivious of.
whats your specs?
i hope your not on a brand new computer with almost no memory used, dual-core, still has the stickers on it, and pretending like its the norm.
not everyone wastes 10k on a computer , with the the childish mentality that its a glorified gameboy, not even "hardcore" "gamers"

That he is getting a percentage at all is proof that he is not playing at the propper speed so relax.
No one is stupid enough to spend more upgrading a PC for an emu rather then spend less money and get the actual handheld/console which they want to play...at least I hope not.
A lot of people are however upgrading at the moment anyways, in order to become DX10 and Vista compliant or for TES4 Oblivion or Crysis or some other PC game.

uh, im gona pretend like you do more with your computer than just play little roms. and not say anything more about this.

Yeah that is actually true..

As for you Prince if you are stupid enough to dont see that all people with a medium pc not a high one like hiey-hhy are getting 80-120 fps what can i say.....lol My specs are posted on this thread..http://forums.ngemu.com/no-gba/89336-speeding-up-emulation-2.html

so you're saying that you run the game over than 100% (60fps) speed all the time? please... it's not 80fps or 120fps is % and bad calculated for nds games, ingame i get a max of 30 to 45fps (real not %) in menus or tiny rooms i get almost 200fps (max i think)

like i said, no$gba has a bad calculation for nds games, you can't say for sure, but you can use softwares that show real fps in screen. can't remember right now.

Fraps.

Fraps also stabs your FPS, so might as well just go for % until it's fixed.
However, when you say your % in a game, make sure you say what your Emulation Speed, LCD Refresh (the first option in the options menu) is.
It's not to smart to go "Oh, I get 150%" when your Emulation Speed is disaster 10%.

Yeah I know Fraps kinda kills performance a bit, but I was just providing the requested program's name.
Besides those big numbers on the small screen are kinda annoying at least to me.

i use disaster 50% for almost all games. it runs smoother, and some others i use real time
