View Full Version : NeonDS - New DS emulator

I have found this new emulator that's supposed to emulate NDS.
The site is in Japanese (or Chinese, or whatever) so I don't know its features but it's good news there's a new emu on the way.

It errm...runs stuff...sorta....no controls that I could find and pressing enter kills it.....I would not say it sucks though...it just needs a bit of work still as all of em do...infact for an emu that suddenly appeared it's actually quite good especially if it's not copied.
I don't see see this as a copy of anything especially DeSmuME for instance because it's code has been released. So that is good news that it's something new and not just a copy of someone else's work...at least as far as I can tell.

http://www.emutalk.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=36429&d=1179852157
How ?
waaaa... demanding,, your wish is my command
step by step plus screen shot
1. first download the neonds emulator
l
2. open the zip file that you download..
since neonds needed the bios7 and bios9 and firmware.. if you have a no$gba folder that have them just copy paste them..
(see my screen shot 1..)
3.use endrypts advanced to descrypt the Rom(since my rom are encrypt becoz i use them for no$gba)
after that open the NeonDS application
choose the rom you want to open example phoenix wright
and then set the save type to 64k.(see my screen no.2)
4.then press the RUN button( see my screen no.3)
5. feel free to test different kind of rom.. keep in mind that this emulator is at its early stages that it does not support video and 3d and as well as some 2d graphic.. enjoy ( screen no 4)
phew,... that was hard... hope it help you guys alot.

I have already got rockman ZX (almost) fully working on my development version (with all animations and game scenes). Before I publish next release for rockman ZX I'm trying to do some optimization. Currently on my AMD64 3000+ machine the game runs at around 40 fps and at some boss scene it slows down extremely to less than 10 fps. This speed is not what I expected, I'm working on find out the problem.
No release date is planned. I have heavy duty job to do and this is my hobby project.

I have debugger functionalities in the debug version, where you can set breakpoints, single-step instructions and tracing facility for memory access, dma transfer, ipc and so on. But enabling debugging will *significantly* slows down the emulator. Later on when I have time I'll try to optimize the debugger as well.

Than CURRENT released versions of desmume: going over 60 fps on Yoshi's Island isn't that hard. And we haven't even started to work on speed :P

Does/will this have joystick support? I view joystick support as an essential part of any working emulator, I'd rather have a slow emu with joystick support than a fast one without. I've been largely ignoring ideas and desemu for this very reason. So far no$gba is the only one with joystick support. :(

Send joysticks to the emu authors, and they'll code support. I don't have a joystick, so I'm interested on adding support for it on desmume. You're free to submit a patch adding support, if you will :P

They're well worth it. Trying to play an emu with a keyboard sucks beyond description, playing with a joystick (or more accurately, a gamepad) is almost like playing it on a real system. Gravis gamepad pro is a good choice, cheap yet extremely good. It's layout is similar to a PS controller (which also means it works great for SNES games). Propad6 is pretty good, cheaper, but fewer buttons and a kind of weird layout. It's essentially like a 6-button genesis/megadrive controller + shoulder buttons (but no start or mode buttons), but the shoulder buttons are actually duplicates of 2 of the six top buttons. The gamepad pro was $15 and the propad6 was $10 when I got them years ago, they should be even cheaper by now.

I personally have been playing emus with keyboard, and finished quite a lot of games like that, so it's quite of a personal choice. As I use the keyboard, and don't have a joystick, I won't add support for that, neither I'll spend a single pound on that, as cheap as they might be: I'm not going to use them, so I'm not going to spend my well earned money on that :P

We are talking about general joystick support, so that applies too to NeonDS :P

I know virtually nothing about programming, let alone controls (keyboard or joystick) for emulators, so bear with me here...
Isn't the code for joystick controls pretty much standard? Couldn't you take the joystick code from some other open source emu, make some minor adjustments, then drop it into yours?

Nope. And we should discuss it elsewhere, as this it getting a bit too focused on desmume now.

I wasn't focusing on desmume, I was focusing on joystick support, which applies to all emulators that don't yet have it (presumably including noends. No one has said for certain yet whether or not it has joystick support, but that seems to be one of the last things people add to an emulator, long after they get a majority of games emulated. No$gba only has it already because of the fact that they merely added DS emulation to an existing emu instead of starting from scratch).

Do you see a joystick on a DS somewhere? No? Well then it's fine to play DS games with a keyboard and only silly console gamers find it stupid/hard.

Bull. DS doesn't have a "joystick", but then neither has anything since atari 2600. DS does however have a built in gamepad, just like everything from NES on up (including all handhelds). I have used the word "joystick" in this thread simply because that's what every emulator refers to it as, regardless whether you actually use a joystick or a gamepad or any other controller.
Keyboards have the directional keys on the wrong side, plus the fact that you have to move your finger to a different key to go a different direction, which is distinctly more awkward to do than to simply roll your thumb on a control pad. It's difficult to keep track of which keys are button A, B, etc. Not to mention how often keyboard users whine about not being able to press more than 1 key at a time (you can press as many buttons at a time on a gamepad as you can physically reach).

I got Izuna to work as did sigmax but the bios are unknown? why is that so
If you got games working then most probably your bios files are ok. I use MD5 checksum on the bios files I have to validate the runtime files, but you know MD5 is very sensitive with file content differences, such as extra 0 at the end of the file. So if your games run properly, you can ignore the "bios unknown" message.

Remember that megaman zx has rotation sprites (some 3D) :p
In fact, the only 3D I saw while testing it, is on the menus top screen, ingame it only uses standard rotates sprites (2D core), not 3D.

that's great now make some test lol :heh:
Well I would...just I am really bad at recognising 2D and 3D.....most of my games are 3D so nothing happens aside from the FPS counter indicating that they are running.
All my games that have worked aside from Phoenix Wright and InuYasha The Secret of the Divine Jewel have already been tested.
InuYasha froze for me in the explanation of the story though after starting a game...which may possibly have been to me trying to skip it by clicking the screen I guess...
http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/7124/screenhunter02jun011619zn6.jpg
And as you can see Phoenix Wright is not playable...unless you have a deadly memory and remember all the button positions and everything...bascially know the game off by heart.
http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/6962/screenhunter05jun011622yu7.jpg
So yeah...that's pretty much all the testing I can do for now untill 3D gets implemented.

How do u identify 2d from 3d like tennis masters seems 2D but doesn't work, can u try it out sig since i know u can
orz what made u interested in making this emulator? Because i am impressed that u can sacrifice time and money and listen to other people ask u when or why a certain game will work

I've got a problem with Megaman ZX.
I can't even reach the menu, well I didn't try waiting, but when I press any button in the intro, the screen first flashes (as if the button is triggered) then, it stops there and freezes ...
I'm wondering what's the problem ... I'd be glad if you can help me :P

Sigmax and RockmanForte, thank you very much for the testing. It is very helpful for me to identify the problems and fix them.
Btw, I'm really tired of people asking forever where to get the bios files, so, I'm now going to implement the missing bios emulation and will have the next version working without bios files :)

Yes I tested zxa. No sprites in main display. Sub display sprites are all right.
I see only very few sprite data are written into the main display sprite memory (3 sprite are used to draw the blood gauge). And, I see also the 3D display is always enabled on bg 0.
Maybe they are using 3D engine to render sprites, but I can not be sure, because no any 3D rendering is implemented yet in my emulator ~~
