View Full Version : NO$GBA uses only 50% of my CPU
Track

Im getting around 50% speed in Diamond/Pearl, but also noticing that thats because the emulator is only using around 50% on my CPU.
How do i make it use more? Maybe then i could get around 80% wich would be playable.

Taking a wild guess, you might have a dual core CPU, and no$gba might be using just one core.

Not so lucky.. i do have hyperthreading though.

Hit CTRL+ALT+DEL to open up your Taskman. Go to the processes tab. Right click the No$GBA process, go to set priority, High. I don't recommend realtime because my computer locked up when I did it but on High it substantially improved its performance.

Thank you for that! Great idea!
But it didnt really improve the performance by much. It still reads 50%.

Hyperthreading makes your CPU work as if it was a Dual Core.

It uses as much as it can automatically...increasing the priority gave me worse performance than on standard
Change the emulator's speed to realtime..(NOT the priority) and that's about as well as it will run, whenever you see no percentage that's just about perfect speed.

How do i change the emulator to realtime?
SCHUMI_4EVER

It's on your emulator options...set the speed to Realtime 16.8Hz (right at the top left) or something like that, you know where you set your save type and all that.

Thats better than the rest? Im using the 100% option cause that seems faster.. the "realtime" is a little faster, but only because it skips frames.
Maybe i should just wait till i buy my 4.0Ghz Core 2 Duo in 2 months.. Although i kind of wish NO$GBA was multi-threaded just like PCSX2.
SCHUMI_4EVER
April 26th, 2007, 16:04
For me it is...it's the only one where you can actually get the propper speed of the game, no precentage means everything is running as it should which is impossible using one of the precentage options.
Track
April 26th, 2007, 16:11
The realtime appears to just give u 100%, no more.
And when it cant give u 100%, it skips frames so its more like a slideshow.
You must have a good PC.. try using "Unlimited Mhz 100%" and tell me how that works.

I wouldn't pay much attention to Task Manager with P4s + HT enabled. You are not using half the CPU resources with HT on. With a true dual-core CPU, that however would be the case for a single-threaded application. Disabling HT almost certainly won't improve performance noticeably.
For now, better CPUs will get better speeds and framerates. Raising the priority of NO$GBA via task manager will help prevent other programs taking CPU resources, but not really increase the framerate by that much on a fairly efficient setup.

Well, that sucks. Why dont they make it multi-threaded?

Cuz the author and possibly lot's of others still have single-core PC's and it takes extra currently unneccessary programming to get it to take advantage of multiple cores?

Thats not true. Many ppl have dual-cores.
They arent even making single-core CPU's anymore.
And look at the PCSX2 team - they coded for dual-cores.
Heck, i was thinking of buying a quad core till they told me its not coded for it.

You should be able to remove HT through your BIOS. (Ive done it once with my CPU) But you won't notice any speed difference.

technically your right, but ahow many people bought pc this year?
most peoples PC's (people who dont have rich mommys/daddys)
are upgraded pc's
just because they might not be making non-dual pc doesnt mean everyone has one.

I had the same problem, on my core2duo and setting affinity to 1 cpu that one cpu was still only used for 40% , but no$gba kept saying it was running 100% speed (so no % display) and it was as if you're playing in slowmo mode
To fix it set the speed to cpu disaster 10% (not 100%, thats slower), then it will use the full cpu power.
That will make the gamespeed playable and won't crash the emulator like the other speeds do
I do recommend turning off your sound then (volume down, don't turn it of in no$gba)
And during battle screens putting the speed back to normal

Less people than you think have dual-cores, not everyone has been able to update to PCI-Express and Dual-core systems yet...sure if you check gaming forums there's a quite a few people running Core2Duo's and 8800GTX's in SLI, but they account for a small part of the worlds population. Lot's of people still have single-cores. I for instance have an AMD Athlon64 3700+ and lot's of others do to. Especially those that don't have their own PC but play on their parents one. Not even all the games being released are dual-core optimised yet and you expect an ongoing project to suddenly be?
There's even still people that did not know that dual-core exists yet. I have seen quite a few questions of people asking what on earth a dual-core is.

The PCSX2 team got it right - they cater to the ppl who have dual-cores because of the ppl who use their emulator have ones.

Its faster now, but unfourtunetely it uses frame skipping so it only seems like its faster.

Only rich bastard gamers have dual-core's lot's of others still don't. Americans are not the only gamers in the world you know.
Also did you miss my comment about not all games even being dual-core yet but you expect an ongoing project to immediately support dual-core's?
I am also not so sure when looking at iDeaS that dual-core's are neccessary for perfect speed. Your'e looking for a pointless fix.

Put frame limit on in your configurations. Sound remains the same and your fps will stay at 50 or 60, depending on the game.

Do you remember ngemu doesn't support piracy, and you shouldn't get support for that game here ?
And that goes for the rest of the people here clearly supporting or helping warez noobs. Rules (http://forums.ngemu.com/751350-post2.html) exist for a reason.

People who use Warez are noobs? Shows how much u know.
If ur values come out of laws then u are only as moral as a country that promotes the death penalty.
And dont worry, i know the mods in this forums.. they wont ban any of u.
They support warez too, but they cant say that so they wont get sued (even though the chances of that are like 0)

If you're stupid enough to break the rules you accepted and you should have read, when registering to this forums, it's not too much calling people noobs.
My values don't come from laws, but I know where's the limit. I know quite a lot of game developers, and piracy harms them quite a lot more than you think.

Your oppinion here is irrelevant and only based on speculation. Ban on first warez sign is rare, but if the attitude continues, the ban will came faster than you think.
Anyway, I'm not a mod, so not my problem and mods don't seem to check these forums often.

Only recently have i found out how not to..
Wich is also why ppl shouldnt be worried about piracy, because 1% of the population knows how to do that.
I mean, downloading songs is SOO easy that my mom can do it and she dosent know anything about computers.. and do u know how many ppl use iTunes??
I guess what im trying to say is that the stupid ppl pay, so the smart wont have to.

what!?!? so a true gamer (in your opinion) is some spoiled little white boy who begged mommy for a 10,000 alienware 8 months ago? iv been a pc gamer since windows 3.1 when 90% of games in the market were...."educational" and only 10% was what we had2 work with.
some of the best coders and elites on the web have some of the oldest equipment there is. and its pretty insulting implying that if you havent the latest hardware regurgitated from the 'zombie gamers market" then your not "a true gamer" you prob dont even know how 2 use dos, making such pompous aligations.

'dont-even-remember' and iv upgraded her every year or so for the past who knows, now she is a pen4 with the most modern hardware, (exept for a dualCore) and i can proudly say that she outperforms most pc's out there, POINT IS : i haven't bought a PC for a couple of years now, and if you dont recognize people like me as humble "gamers" ..much less recognize us as anything beyond that, then you have no business on these forums.

Essentialy every time you upgrade your motherboard you are getting a new PC, as that's all a PC really is, a motherboard with a PSU and then a bunch of stuff stuck onto the motherboard...and you will have had to get 1 if not 2 or 3 new motherboards during that time. Your PC is nowhere near as old as you would like us to believe.
