I might have to play this game as I used to play the older pokemon games but I've always been bugged with these games about one thing, the difficulty level, it's like it's only made for 5 year old kids, I wish the game had dynamic wild monster lvl change so you just can't lvl yours up and kill em all in 1 hit (yea very fun gameplay indeed -_-).
I used to play Pokemon Gold at one point with a gameshark code allowing me to manually specify which level the wild pokemon would appear at so I could higher it to something more suitable (ie higher) when I enter a new area. At least that made it more difficult and items were more usable and stuff but it kinda killed the gameplay as well.
However if I play without that code I usually try to catch as many Pokemon as possible and swap them out once they lvl up so that way I maintain as low levels as possible on the Pokemon I enter a battle with making it more difficult to beat an another trainer.
Strategy is the key for RPG games, an RPG game is at it's best when a certain strategy needs to be used depending on enemy you face if you want to win. Pokemon nearly fills the requirement, only if something would be done about the difficulty level and perhaps either raising the HP of the Pokemon overall a bit or lowering damage done by attacks slightly. If they only realised that something should be done about the difficulty lvl I'd be happy.

It's addicting because it awakens the collector in its user. Kinda the same with Diablo 2 and others of its kind, though there's still more behind it than just having a variety of stuff to see.
