Whenever I start a game, No$Gba immediately goes in-game, not allowing me to change language. This means it starts games in Japanese. What's the problem? The firmware file is in the same folder as No$Gba. How do I let it start at the normal start screen of a DS?

It was already mentioned in no$gba thread...search it, ok ? I posted the screen shot for it already. There are 3 pages. Search all of them to find one. :)

I saw that already, but the problem is: No$Gba doesn't start at that screen. It starts immediately with the game, even if I reset, so there's no way to click on the small DS icon. How do I get No$Gba to use the firmware.bin? (p.s. the filesize is 256 KB so there's a big chance I have a correct firmware.bin)

Read the no$gba thread again. You are missing something.

Go to Emulation Setup - Startup options and select GBA BIOS (Nintendo Logo)
