View Full Version : Final Fantasy XII, pcsx2, and YOU!

So, to cut a long story short, this topic involves FFXII and pcsx2. What the hell will I need to run this smoothly? I'm on a 4400+ X2, 2GB and an x850XT. I mean, it completely chews up most games. Failing that, is there a plugin I can download such that I can tyurn down the graphics enough to make it playable?

February 20th, 2007, 17:41
Wait for the next version? Even I can't run it smoothly, much less anyone else with systems better then ours.

February 20th, 2007, 21:38
Skoreanime, the reason you can't run smoothly is the cause of your gpu... I get full speed over 60+ fps with an X1900 GT with a lower clock rate...
Of course, BF and AA, both are turned off to achieve this. With BF and AA 4x on, it range from high 40-60 fps depending on the angle of the camera/viewing...

February 20th, 2007, 21:43
I've turned on Frane skip and VU Skip, but it doesnt make the sound and things smooth, although I get 30-40FPS. Any help?

February 20th, 2007, 21:50
Oh right, I keep forgetting about my GPU rofl! Damn you ATI! Give me my R600's already .
Back on topic:
You get sound skipping because you're running at 30-40fps. If you want no skipping at all, you'll have to be running a constant, or near constant, 60fps(50 if you're running PAL).
Maybe try OC'ing? Or a bit more if you already are. Other then that, try this (http://forums.ngemu.com/pcsx2-official-forum/85240-real-method-increase-fps-15-30-not-upgrade.html) maybe? It seems to help a lot of people.

ya the r600 should make a big difference in a relatively gpu dependent game like ffxii. I can't get great fps even with my x1600 (which is marginally better than an x700 imho)
as skore mentions, sound syncs with video, or tries to. Since the sound isn't actually slowed down (i.e. the pitch lowered, have you ever heard an old tape recorder play at lower speeds) it has to cycle a bit to keep it in line with the video. You'd probably like it less if the sound kept runnin at full speed and your video didn't, then you'd get sound that was going to occur happening before you got to the scene...
and, bumcheek, you have a high end (albeit previous gen) video card, so yeah it'd be great for pc gaming which use the GPU a lot more than cpu but if you want a game like ffxii to run full speeds you need a good dual core cpu (the 4400+ might be just a little bit on the slow side) with a pretty good gfx card (probably x1800 at least or 7800 for nvidia). but ya if you can, try oc'ing it - the Framerate often increases the same amount as the clockspeed.

-support x64  nice job

all that well give a significative speed

pcsx2 9.1.3 ff12 playable (i hope.......)

Both of those games are already playable at full speed. You need a good computer though... Maybe the next version with Windows x64 bit supported would give you guys some speed boost for those who have an "old computer"..

If you have an x64 processor, do you need the x64 OS to use x64 programs, or can you still use the x86 OS, and just use some 64-bit programs?

You need both a 64-bit CPU and a 64-bit OS to run 64-bit programs.

maybe someone of you would be so kind and post the whole settings of his pcsx2? with settings I mean things like graphics, sound, cdvdrom, etc.. I'm not sure if better settings would give me some more fps in ffxii, atm I got about 10, not enough to play.. but I really have no idea of the setup of this program ^^ I'm just happy that it works :)

mostly the default options are good options. look at the stickies. post your pc specs. If you have a core 2 duo or athlon x2 or athlon FX dual core you'll be able to get good playability. otherwise play it on your PS2

turn on the task manager and see how your RAM is doing, if you need more then:

Sorry, no probs controlling the chars here... It being unstable is my primary concern here, but I don't know if that's due to My System vs. The VM-build or just MTGS vs. FF12...
@Andre: This has been "fixed", do some research: http://forums.ngemu.com/pcsx2-official-forum/82101-vm-version-research-why-not-working.html
@Kev: There's a complete savegame compilation of this game available for download in this forum. Look it up. If you can't, try either:
- disabling MTGS and DC
- try switching from VM to non-VM or vice versa ---Good luck!

Just out of curiosity: Are we still talking about FFXII? Where do you get stuck?
There's ways around these freezes, and some will even reoccur, so it's best to learn your way around FF12 instead of getting a savegame to bypass it. Once I get home I'll look it up for ya, but answer my first questions first please...
Thx.

Hi there =)
really nice work you've done so far ( Dev Team ), i wish i could help you in any way... but well I´m just stupid in that thing ^^.
My Ps2 doesn't read any Ps2 games, only DvD-Films.
I got FFXII running so far, I can live with the graphical glitches... as black partial black surrounding or even black Characters, at the beginning of the game.
Ok even the stuttering sound is not that problem, but I'm stuck now... after the Cutscene with Vaan stealing the guard and then talking to the girl FFXII just ends and I´m in the PS2 System menu where I choose between the memcards an the disc.
Already tried to use gsdx, MGTS, DC, billinear on of different AA settings, even with the nonVM version auf pcsx2 but it's the same.
Edit:
Ok now i managed getting pass that scene... pressing start + x to abort it, now i just saw the continued tutorial which explains me about the map. Pressing X to leave the map I get a strange glitch not beeing able to do anything... it freezes up also playing with statesaving but no help :S
Does anyone know what I could do?

Aah, the message bug... Whenever i'm in VM mode and this happens, I save beforehand, run nonVM with just MTGS and DC disabled load the game properly(no savestates) and I get past it.
But sometimes it's combined with a sound bug(loops etc) and you'll get get kicked out nontheless. To help limiting the occurance of a sound bug I enable "Threaded Mode" at the SPU plugin options..
The above works for me, hope it helps you. I don't have a pal savegame I can supply and I got this same bug one npc ahead of you when you check out the bullitin board in the cafe... strange. Well, I am using the ntsc version...
Your last shot implies ur using non-VM or a very very stable VM(note to self: get yours fixed!), that's usually a sound bug for me...

March 7th, 2007, 10:30
Strange... now i don't even reach the menu with the non VM version. About the stable VM, I didn't have any error messages so far with pcsx2 so I don't know if there is everything fine with or not ;)
Only thing I can do with the TLB version is loading a state but the result is the same, quitting the map, glitch, black screen, pcsx2 stops.
nepsquare
March 7th, 2007, 10:57
So it's no option loading the game from title in TLB? Only savestates?
Few things to try still...:
1 if this happens after a cut-scene, skip the whole scene entirely by pressing start followed by X. (but I guess this was the first thing you tried)
2 load game from memorycard with MTGS and DC disabled (threaded mode optional)
3 refrain from using savestates when running around a bug. I got stuck trying everything possible to get past the "renegade tomato" bug, only to find out a few days later my savestate had the imminent "return to town crash" in it. Jup, the sh!t is sticky.
Reloaded an older (read: one cutscene beforehand)savegame from memorycard. Saved at the new position right before the bug. Restart pcsx2 and then followed step 2 to get past it.
Restarting PCSX2 frequently also eliminates any sound bugs resident in buffer/mem/whatever....These loops usually get you the last screen you posted. Blackness.
Ok, I might've repeated myself but this is the only way for me to get past "those" bugs.

1 GB Ram (6400)
GF 7600 GT (256 MB, ddr-3)
Sata2 HDD (The ffxii image on it)
I've tried this configs:

I've tried several DVD plugins like P.E.Op.s and EFP with the same problem
I use P.E.Op.S SPU2 1.6.0 for sound.
For CPU I've tried MTGS and DC and the 4 frame limiting options.
Bios USA v01.60 from my console ;)
The problem is that when I try to run FFXII It gets kindda stuck with the first screen and the sound plays with pauses, the frame rate goes down to 3-4 fps even though my cpu it's not running full. If I try to skip some frames, then the pcsx2t process fails and closes.
By the way, when the game is loading and the "Playstation 2" image appears, it looks weird and unreadable.

I've tried other games like FFX with no problems at all.
Got any clues??

thats happened because your game is a different region to the bios.
but use file->run cd/dvd not run->execute

The pcsx2t process fails if I use File-> run Cd/DVd....
Anyway, I'll try the bios of my other PS2 console ;)

Solved. I MUST use ZeroGS and non-VM Pscsx.
The only thing is that the game runs so slow (with some frame skipping I can get 50+ fps). Besides, sometimes (or most of the time, I should say) I see the screen vertically splitted.
Has anyone managed to run it properly (or in a non-annoying but playable mode).

I got it to run quite well, up to the point you get out of Rabanastre for the first time, and then I just cant get back in or to the zone further in the estersand since the emu then crashes, with the last console lines being
Write to 32 bit count reg counter 5
Counter 5 count write 0
Write to 32 bit count reg counter 5
Counter 5 count write 0
Thats with VM and zerogs.
The TLB version just hang at that point, with the console saying
cpuException: Status.EXL = 1 cause 20
cpuTLBMiss 8220c, *8 variable characters*, status=70030c01, code=c
for whole screen and then
#Restart
NTSC
NTSC
# Initialize GS ...
and so on
overall the speed aint so bad even without the 256 color trick, but you got to live with the heavy graphic glitches
turning dc/mtgs on/off, switching gs plugin, loading from memcard or even disabling recompilers did no good
system specs should be in sig

@Jief:
Look for the rotten tomato bug in the forum; The way I got past it was:
1. Save at the crystal BEFORE you leave town.
2. Close program.
3. Start PCSX2 again, disable MTGS/DC, properly load the game (no savestates!)
4. Walk out of town.
5. Go back again.
Does the same crash happen? If YES, repeat from step 2.
If NO, you can savely leace town now and finish your quest, IT WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN.
@KevKev: which version (pal/ntsc) are you using? What patch are you trying to make?

hi guys,
Heres what i've done , whats working and whats not.
Settings
Video - ZeroGS 0.95.2
(defaut Settings)
Controller
SSSPSX 1.7.0
Bios
USA V2.00
Sound
P.E.Op.S 1.6.0
Mode = 2
Volume = 3
Reverb = 0
Interpolation = 2
XA = No
(rest is default)
whats working
The game boots up no problem,
the Videos are fine with the screen truning very blocky in sections
whats not working
The games some times jams if i watch the game intro.
i can skip all the game intro and get to the "Use your anolog stick to look around section"
I am unable to see any charactors, all i see is a thin graphical lines and the background , (exploded polygons)
and of course i cant use an anolog stick cause i dont have one and i dont know how to config it to a keyboard :D so i'm stuck at the start :D
i get a fps of about 35 -45
Anyone what to improve on this?

Jup, use the VM build. This will fix the polygons/models.
For the pad thingie... I dunno... you should be able to map directional buttons to keyboard, if not: try the new pad plugin...

Cheers, the vm build worked beautifully.
cant seems bind any keys to the "LX", "LY", "RX", "RY".
in other emu's, usually you click it .. it waits for input... then you move your mouse in the direction required, but in this - i just donno.
O i forgot to mention my setting for the Cdvdrom
Settings
lINUZAPPZ ISO cdvd dRIVER 0.5.0
Set the dir to the iso image of my FFXII.
Enable block dump
**keybind problem solved - http://forums.ngemu.com/pcsx2-official-forum/80835-twinpad-keyboard-plugin.html?highlight=Analog
*** New problem , game seems to crash when i enter the gate, the error seems to be coming from the graphics plugin, i'm looking into it now but if anyone is getting the same error let me know
**** problem solved - silly me , i was using version 9.1
Well all said and done it jams at random places and the sounds stops after loading a state.
looks like ill just have to wait for 9.3 :/

i dont really have trouble with the speed but when you get to the part where the city is your stumped

My ingame clock says I've played 22 hours of FF12 so far, and I'm currently at the Henne Mine, avg party level 26.
I have done everything on pcsx2 without downloading savegames.
I use zerogs .96 sse2, twinpad 0.1.0, P.E.Op.S CDVD 1.2.0 and ofc my usa bios.
Speed average at 40-50 (gonna overclock as soon as I buy a PCI-E compliant mobo...). Also, i get some mixed up textures (white polygons and text not showing up) If you are lucky, moving the camera can make the text appear.
Using dual core/mtgs mode seem to make the game unstable when some "special events" happen, like quickenings. Hopefully savestating, turning those modes off and loading back does the trick in most case. If not, load from the memcard.
In short, as long as you play safely, you can have good hope of going through the game on current emu version

@DarkSlice: Sound only stops when sound is not initialised when you load a savestate, try loading a savestate from the title opening.
I'm at the last save now, it's in it's own charn: fully playable!
