Hell yeah! And I've actually been playing a lot of ZSNES lately, too.
News: ZSNES 1.50 Official is now available! (News ripped off from zsnes.com)
I am pleased to announce another long awaited release of ZSNES. This time around we made many improvements to the software in general, fixed, and added many new features.
We also have made several updates to the emulation fixing bugs that were never addressed before.
People who maintain packages for various distros should use "./configure --enable-release --disable-cpucheck force_arch=i586 " to build this release, see the documentation for more details.
Please read our large but but comparatively modest change log of all the changes we made.
Enjoy the release and happy holidays from the ZSNES Team.
The changelist (http://files.ipherswipsite.com/zsnes/official/150cl.txt) is HUGE, so I won't quote it.

Thx for the news.
This team only keeps going and going, I would have thought there's nothing left to improve as I found it working perfectly fine already 2-3 years ago. (OK I think Star Ocean had some serious gfx errors by that time but otherwise) :heh: I've had a break from snes emulation a long time now, maybe should dig out my old favs and give em some try again on this wonderful emu.

Sound emulation is still crap, IMO. Chrono Trigger still sounds like ass. Thanks for the fond memories zsnes, but I think I'll just use bsnes instead.

Really? I just got done playin some Chrono Trigger on ZSNES (I just found out my goddamn cartridge battery died! I had everything several times over! my characters were gods! :( ) and it sounded just like on my SNES. is it at a certain spot?
anyway... i'm really liking the .zmv improvements! To think of all the video tapes i've used over the years recording my fav. spots in games. now i can dump it to avi and make a vcd!

There are a number of sound problems. Most have to do with noise generation. Listen to Luminaire and Chrono's critical attack in zsnes and compare it to that in bsnes.
Zsnes also has some video issues with Chrono Trigger. Whenever a message box pops up in battle, the screen flashes black for a millisecond. Also, the video output just doesn't seem as smooth as bsnes.
What makes me sad is that zsnes did not use to have these problems. Back in the day sound emulation was near perfect. Then the developers decided to change a lot of code to improve compatibility with a lot of Japanese games that no one had heard of. I think they are trying to emphasize quantity over quality. Bsnes on the other hand, tries to perform cycle-accurate emulation. As a result, you get an experience which features both quality emulation and high-compatibility (at least with the chips that have been emulated so far). On the down side, Bsnes doesn't have many of zsnes's features, such as save states... but since it's open source I might look into implementing that.

You don't necessarily need to use latest version tho, when I played CT on ZSNES it was prolly somewhere at v1.3x (could have been v1.36) or so I think and then sound worked perfectly fine in FF games among others and can't remember of any gfx bugs either.

ZSNES sound has ALWAYS been inaccurate, but they're rewriting the sound core right now to make it sound accurate.

THEN USE THAT FREAKIN VERSION, DUDE.
I can't believe I have to tell you that. If it used to work....USE THAT VERSION. There is no law that says you only have to use one version. For the love of Solid Snake, stop complaining about ZSNES. I'm sick of the goddamn CT complaints....just play it on another emulator or another version of the same emulator.
I play a lot of PS1 games. I use ePSXe 1.5.2 and 1.6.0 mainly, but also PSXeven, PCSX, and pSX (and used to use SSSPSX but can't get it going anymore). I've also experimented with Bleem, Xebra, and others. The problem you're complaining about (and have in the past in the ZSNES WIP page, IIRC) is super common, I figured someone like you would recognize that. Look at ePSXe--when 1.6.0 came along, they fixed stuff like GT2 and added features....but it screwed up FF9. Such is the nature of emulation.

hushypushy you don't really need to rant, they're updating the sound core anyway!
plus the issue was on more than CT, there are a lot of Square games that have issues sound-wise on ZSNES.

Your opinion is that ZSNES has bad sound emulation, which is fine. In fact, it might even be a fact, because everyone seems to agree on it.
BUT don't ***** about it not working when
A. other emulators (like you said) play it correctly and
B. older versions of the same emulator work.
I'd much rather see these so called "Japanese games that no one has ever heard of" made playable and CT broken than CT working perfectly and those other games not work. You know why? Because CT works in other emulators and that's good enough. Also I played CT for a while on ZSNES and I never noticed it, so I suppose that's another thing.
PLUS.....they are fixing it anyway! All the *****ing worked, so you can stop now ;)

I'm not aware of any older version of zsnes having correct sound. I'm also not aware of any other games working by CT being broken.
Captain, or anyone else with knowledge about triple buffering, go and read the latest posts in the bsnes thread on zsnes forum (emulators section). Byuu often goes into detail here on why triple buffering doesn't work, and it's one of the things he needs outside help with.

just ignore him, ZSNES is perfect since 1.36, I love it's interface
I hope PCSX2 got the same (as I hate small windows, its kindda paradox,
small window, great job! ;) )

it's probably just the stupid rpg's not working 200% perfect.

I can explain this in simple terms.
Older versions of ZSNES used hacks to correct the sound in a small number of Square games (CT is one) that used a technique of using bad audio data to create various sound effects. This hack has since been removed from ZSNES, since it was not emulation but simulation. Feel free to use the older versions that have hacks or use other emulators which use anomie's S-DSP core (eg. bsnes) to play such games. This problem will be eliminated when ZSNES's S-DSP core gets updated at some point in the future.

Doom works fine with a valid deinterleaved dump.

Hmmm, here it says "Interleaved: NO". So I guess I need a new one.
