Just to get an idea of standard specs for performance in (probably frequently played) game, post your range and average fps in FFX for the first playable scene
Specs: 2.00 GHz Pentium M 760
1 GB DDR2 533 RAM
80 GB 5400 HDD
128 MB ATI x300 Mobility (OC 410/310)
Range FPS: 17-31 fps
Average: ~24 fps

what scene you mean?
for me is the first playable scene when Tidus is on his houseboat in front of a crowd of teenagers.

thats what i get: 113.5 FPS

that's awesome I'm jealous. do you get full fps throughout the whole game? I'm thinking of building a new comp soon. How much did your setup cost?

do you get full fps throughout the whole game?

Yep, except at the beginning of the Mi'hen Highroad.

How much did your setup cost?
1200EURO ^^

Hi dashboardy, I saw you are using Laptop. I also notice that you have overclocked your vga card. May i ask you, what application you're using to oc it?? Also, can you tell me what is the speed before overclock your vga?? Thank in advance for an info.

is software designed specifically for ATI cards (although the later version 0.26 also overclocks NVIDIA). Here are two direct links: one is to version 0.24:
http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/8a/ATITool_0.24.exe
and the other to version 0.26
techPowerUp! :: Download ATITool 0.26 (http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/436/mirrors.php)
0.24 works much better with my card, for some reason 0.26 reads the clocks incorrectly. What kind of card do you have? I overclock my card from 300/216 core/memory to 410/310 (MHz). Not too shabby; it increases the performance significantly.
If you are using a laptop and have automatic power settings and it becomes unplugged your screen will look extremely sketchy. Simply shut it down (hold power) to get it back to default settings. Sometimes it has been the only way for me to see windows again.

I'm using Acer's laptop. It comes with x600 64Mb. Games like Disgaea work pretty well but i've no luck with 3D games. I've tried FFX and i got around 17-20 FPS. It never go beyond this point.

Thank you for your help and links. :)

Edit: HERE is my comp's spec

CPU AMD Turion 64Bit 1.6Ghz ML-28
RAM 512M DDR II 266MHz (damn it)
VGA ATI x600 64MB VRAM

I complete Makai Kingdom and La pucelle with PCSX2. Speed is not bad for these games although it is not 100% but playable.

It's the processor that's the problem in your computer, if it's dual core though, there could be improvements, but since it's a laptop, I think you can't change it.

This is a silly question. If you want to compare systems just browse through the Screenshots sticky.

If you're looking for advice on what to buy for your next computer purchase, then it's already pretty well known that the Core 2 Duo is the best there is right now. However, even when over-clocked these systems will not run all games at full speed.

I suggest that if you feel you need to buy a computer, buy something in the mid-range like a C2D E6400. That will give you pretty decent speed for many games and when the next generation of CPUs arrives you can always upgrade with the money you didn't spend today.

appreciate the words of wisdom, barius... especially the part where this is a silly question. some of us do not have 527 posts to speak of, and therefore know this forum significantly less well than others. This forum seems to have a trend whereby the old guys think the new guys are completely incompetent. It's entertaining, but far from accurate in many cases (although from what I have seen it also has its validity).

Sorry, I could have been more polite about it, but a quick search would have shown you that this question has been shot down by the mods more than once in the last few months alone.

I'm not particularly upset about n00bs asking silly questions, what bothers me is that they tend to post looking for help before they try to help themselves.

>> This forum seems to have a trend whereby the old guys think the new guys are completely incompetent.

Name a forum that doesn't work this way ;)

no it's cool although it looks as though you actually could be considered somewhat of a noob yourself (time-wise)
what bothers me is that they tend to post looking for help before they try to help themselves.

I'm not sure if you were referring to this thread but for one I hardly think it's practical to look through all the posts (other than the stickied ones and the like), and for two this thread has nothing to do with looking for help.
anyways thanks for directing me to that subject - imagine my surprise when i realized that somebody had already come up with my exact idea only better.

Hey Dashboardy! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! WIth ATI Tools my freaky old x600 run FF X at 23-40 FPS! without Frameskip (If i turn Frameskip on, FPS will increased double but choppy too much)!!
The speed i mention above is the speed during Tidus is in the first cave. There is a waterfall that cause speed drop to 23-25 but it is acceptable.

I use ATITool 0.24 since 0.26 detect my vga core speed/mem as 48mhz/48mhz ?? but 0.24 work pretty well. I've oc 400/200 to 500/270. I can't oc memmory's speed more than 70 otherwise screen will collapse..
Like you said, with this oc, the speed improvement is significant. Anyway, 2D games didn't gain any benefit from OC.

By the way, i've a question regard ATITool. How long it takes to finish a scanning maximum core process? I've waited for 40 minutes but it stills keep running.

Thank anyway for your big help Dashboardy. Now i can replay FFX.

that's great to hear. jeng. haha I wish my x300 was an x6 or x700 as it would likely be a great deal quicker at rendering. atitool is quite nice - yeah for some reason 0.26 read my clock speeds incorrectly as well but 0.24 is very nice. When scanning maximum memory you can either do it the way it is programmed (scan maximum memory) or you can simply keep the 3d screen open, and increase the memory, perhaps 5 mhz at a time. if you see ANY artifacts (yellow dots are usually the first to show) then that combination of max memory/core speed is too high. i would say go at least 5 mhz below where you get artifacts from the 3d screen. then artifact scan (this is a more rigorous artifiact scanning test) and let it run for a few minutes. Also note if you have an ATI card you have powerplay. This is a utility for ATI cards that may decrease pci-e cards from 16x to 1x when you unplug your laptop. So if you have it overclocked and you accidentally unplug it, it'll go crazy; you might have to force a shut down because nothing is viewable (it's scary but a simple restart will do the trick). you can change the powerplay settings (which are nice for battery life if you''re not gaming) by right clicking the desktop, hit the settings tab, and hit advanced. If your ATI utility is installed this window will have a powerplay tab.

Another thing that you might like trying is changing the gui of windows slightly. Windows classic (as opposed to luna) takes less graphics resources, and using a blank background might also help. if you right click my computer, click properties and hit the advanced tab, the top section is called "performance". You can click "settings" and "adjust for best performance" - this basically turns off all windows animations, etc. and i've found thsi to increase speeds slightly. also, if you have a centrino processr (wanna list your specs?) you can change power options from portable/laptop to 'always on'. (when you right click my computer/properties, it will tell you what your processor is running at - if there are two different speeds then you have pseedstep on. also google "cpu-z" if you want to know what your processor is running at. This will turn off EIST (speedstep) which means instead of your processor sometimes going below maximum capacity, it will always be turned on its full speed. usually when running pcsx2 it's intense enough that it will be full speed anyways but i saw a small improvement.

Hi Dashboardy, I just come to inform you that x600 is not powerful enough to play FFX. :( i know i said it is but after i move on, the speed has drop to 19-25 (on the RIKKU's ship) So it is not that good. I think if the frameskip is less choppy it might playable. At least, if we can select the number of frame to skip.

Thank anyways for this great thread helping me alot.

Hi Fadingz, it was my bad. I forget to mention that cpu speed is the most important part. With Solo core, x600 cannot emulate FFX well enough.

Also, Castlevania-fan, This apply to you too. Geforce 6600 is powerful enough to play FFX but you'll need a good CPU as well like dual core or 3.0Ghz UP. If you intend to overclock your card i would remmend you to try to increased 5mhz at a time. You can start from 350 and increase 5mhz each time and see if your card can make it. Hope this help. Good luck

Well, it starts off at 300/450, and i was able to beef it to 500/520 is that a decent increase, but if i go any higher, my system freezes :P so i think im like on the border line.

but i have not seen ANY increase in speeds. and i tested with ffx-2 and disgea, disgea speeds of 20-25fps is good enough for me to play the whole game, it will be the first game i beat :P well i hope it is. and does anyone know a site selling a copy of disgea 2, i cant find any shops that sell it here in aus, or places to rent it out :S

Well, the main problem I see with your computer setup (I got it from your previous posts.) is that the processor is too slow. Try buying a new processor as it would increase speed a lot.

Sorry for asking this 'very dumb' question, but what is 'dual core'?

tkSteveFOX
December 16th, 2006, 08:21
The core is the heart of the CPU most recently intel and amd developed dual core CPU`s(two hearts). So it`s like getting two procesors in one theoreticly speaking it doubles the speed of the CPU.I can`t think of an easier way to explain it.As to OC well the GPU OC can be increased with a voltage mod but i wouldn`t recommend this to the noobies.

WOW you did a big oc.. Are you sure 500/520 won't burn your vga? Do you know what is the current temperature of your card??

If you've read my previous post, i did mention that 2D games like la pucelle and Disgaea doesn't gain any benefit from OC your vga since it depends heavily on CPU. I don't know why you can't see the different. I gain 5fps for addition 100mhz on FFX from around 20-25 to 25-30 at the same Scene. Anyway, the result may varied depends on what vga card you are using. Also, there is no used to oc card if you don't have a decent cpu. :( it's time to face the truth.

I really do want a new graphic card, I got this x600 256MB for $30 on sale XD
but graphic card now a days is what...$400? :spy: I hope i can find more on sale lol :heh:

Sorry for asking this 'very dumb' question, but what is 'dual core'?

dual core can run faster a bit than a single core, but the main thing is that it can run more processes; like a larger bag can't really carry denser stuff per volume, but it can carry a lot more stuff of the same density than a small bag. speed is determined by the GHz speed of the processor.
so far, the fastest dual core i think is 4GHz, but that will cost you a fortune :innocent:

and to Castlevania-fan,
since you can't use MTGS&DC if you wanna X-2(to use FFX hack), CPU can't really help there. I get 35 fps here with my set up and my 256 MB X600; as jeng28 said, you might need to suffer a bit :S

i think it could be the main reason, is its my processor, its only a celron 2.66 so yea, kinda on the slow side, anyone rec a good mb and duel core proc.

Fadingz
December 18th, 2006, 00:32
you need a 3.0+ for it to run smoothly and a 3.0 duel for full speed on various games
(i doubt anyone can stay full speed on FFXII normal graphic setting all the time XD)
what's ur RAM? it's quite important too, it fills the hole of my graphic card a bit too
