View Full Version : VM version research why not working...
thc
December 9th, 2006, 10:49
I'm just curious as for myself VM version of pcsx2 works fine (however my friend was unable to use it due to spyware). If anybody is unable to use VM version due to "Unable to allocate blabla" message and is willing to cooperate...
a) don't expect instant or easy solution, this is more or less my curiosity, it may result in some hints what DLL is conflicting with PCSX2 on your rig or which program, however also in nothing
b) 64bit version is probably going to solve this problem
1) download process explorer (http://www.scanwith.com/Process_Explorer_download.htm)
2) run PCSX2 VM version and let it running with that error message box
3) run process explorer
4) find PCSX2.exe in it's list and select it (just click on it)
5) ensure view->show lower pane view is checked
6) ensure view->lower pane pane view->DLLs is checked
7) right click on lower pane view column and click "Select Columns..."
8) check all options in dialog named "Select Columns" tab "DLL"
9) File->Save
10) Post resulting file here.
If You are going to identify this by Yourself then
PCSX2 refuses to start when some DLL is loaded in this space 0x18000000-0x58000000 and 0x77FF0000-0x78000000.
EDIT:
Please before posting here check You have XP SP2 and "Lock pages in memory priviledge" in Your account.
Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Local Security policy->Local Policies->User rights assignment->Lock Pages in memory. ensure Your current account has this right.
EDIT:
Include error message which You're getting in messagebox and console error message.
EDIT:
VM version requires SSE2 CPU. so check this also.... (Athlon XP doesn't have SSE2 instruction set, so VM will not run for You)

ok, here it is.
thc
December 9th, 2006, 17:29
Actually in your case it's
advapi32.dll API de base do Windows 32 avançada Microsoft Corporation 5.01.2600.2180 0x77F50000 0xAB000
coz these two memory ranges overlap.
0x77F50000 + 0xAB000 = 77FFB000
0x77FF0000-0x78000000 PCSX2
0x77F50000-0x77FFB000 advapi.dll
no help for this library as it gets loaded here for me too, it's probably OK (as the devs are using it), however I don't get loaded apphelp.dll which is forcing advapi.dll load higher. apphelp is used when You run program in compatibility mode with other windows....
meredito
December 9th, 2006, 17:53
So there is nothing I can do about that? I'm not running any program in compatibilty mode.
thc
December 9th, 2006, 18:07
Are you sure about that ? It's in properties and third tab named compatiblity.
Otherwise there is no more You can do (except researching why You get loaded that DLL) devs could make another build with bit moved PS2MEM_BASE_ which in Your case will probably help.

I am no expert, but, i guess that it might have something to do with the localized version o this or co-related dlls.

Ok, just as a notice, SVN is not allowed here, solution If You are able to compile in VC2005, just change PS2MEM_BASE_ to 0x18100000 (this is probably true for brazilian windows). Actualy all what I'm sending by PM is link to customized build (1 char changed).

You use Alcohol Starwind to share your disk drives via network.
This is not a good idea when running demanding software like PCSX2
And why do you do that anyway?

December 24th, 2006, 17:03
Hmm, what's Alcohol Starwind ?
Nachbrenner
December 24th, 2006, 17:19
Hmm, what's Alcohol Starwind ?
apparently embedded into some versions of "Alcohol" (not in mine though)
Looks like you can also buy it standalone
:: RocketDivision :: CD/DVD/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD recording, iSCSI and AoE (ATA-over-Ethernet) (http://www.rocketdivision.com/products.html)
Actually i think you shouldn't run PCSX2 on a server at all.
Your clients won't like it to work in slow-motion, when PCSX2 hogs the CPU
refraction
December 24th, 2006, 17:21

as nachbrenner said, its part of the AlcoholSoft cd burning suite, its the rootkit which provides the virtual drive, much like daemon tools

"if i start a game closed the window ?"
well then it's not the case this thread is about, I made it for ppl not able to run PCSX2 due to it's memory address space requirements, not for ppl experiencing it's bugs. ;) Can't help You with this unless Is game You're trying to run in compatibility list ? if I'm not blind there is no dll loaded in address range for this error. 487 saying it's used however.
:guess: maybe some antivirus/firewall/spyware allocated memory to inject pcsx2 process and didn't freed after itself, this'll probably not show in pe log.

thc
January 17th, 2007, 15:30
well... it's not hidden process, dll should be shown unless it uses more exotic way. it's just using virtualallocex you move dll path string into target process, and then call createremotethread with loadlibrary address and that string as argument. if you don't release that memory after yourself then this memory will not be visible in pe, however not allocatable by pcsx2. (altho usable most likely), also some of those dlls may just alloc vm in such way it prevents pcsx2 run, the more You get rid of the better.
can't think of anything right now, will keep it in head and pm You/post here in few days, too much work now.

[hard way]
depends will show dll "Prefered base" (that's what You want to change) link-time dependencies to other dlls, and other stuff.
just open .exe or .dll link-time dependencies are in tree, list with preffered base column is under that.
Dependency Walker (depends.exe) Home Page (http://www.dependencywalker.com/)
rebase (attachment) will allow You to change "prefered base".
altho note You'll need some other OS to rewrite system files, and it may screw Your system..... (some live CD of any linux can do this), not sure about windows builtin ways to update....
xpsp2res is probably one of those You want to rebase. as to that image loaded on 3ee80000 I have no idea how it's possible it has no name.... will look at it.
EDIT:
attachment doesn't work. rebase is there (www.abstudio.cz/moje/rebase.zip)
[easy way]
however I'm allmost sure I seen some ppl with italian windows running VM here, so Your best bet is uninstalling software which dlls get loaded into PCSX2 process, and have no link-time dependencies.
(the ones I told earlier, +maybe some others not sure)

VM and TLB have same plugin requirements AFAIK, so it's little strange (if I understood what You just said)
I don't know how plugins in official release were compiled but You're maybe missing some VC runtime libraries, If You use depends on plugins You'll see what DLLs You need for them (and what DLLs You're missing)

I didn't want to dump all my technical problems on you, thc. I was just expressing disappointment at the software still failing even after solving the problem. (By the way, I uninstalled Panda. Didn't like it that much anyway.)
And I think I posted the problem in another thread that, for whatever reason, PCSX2 doesn't recognize either Pe.Op.S. or Xeven's CDVD plugins. It's the same for the VM and the TLB versions. I might reload the VC libraries, as you suggested, but even if I get those plugins to work, there's no guarantee the VM version will run. I just figured I might better be able to diagnose the problem if I could try the disc rather than the ISO.
In any case, I'm going to try to take it from here, and if I have any other problems I'll open a new thread so this topic remains...on topic.

You need http://www.pcsx2.net/files/3237 which you put either in the emu or Windows\System32\ folder.

Not sure if this is the place, but I am trying to run PCSX2 in WinXP 64-bit Edition and it says it doesn't have enough memory. This PC has 2GB and most of it is free, so I don't know why it's having trouble.
http://www.ecursed.com/pictures/pcsx2error.jpg
Here's my output from that tool. As you can see this setup is pretty lean.
um that's the error when you can't enable_lock_se or whatever goes into the registry. try redownloading it, and hopefully it prompts you to add it to the registry and logoff/logon.
Edit: Is your OS Windows XP x64 Edition, or Windows XP 64-bit edition? I'm assuming the former, because the 64-bit edition is meant specifically for Itanium 64 processors...
other Edit: there's not much point in running it in XP x64 yet... unless your just planning for the future. the performance is identical right now (for me at least)

Yeah, I'm getting the same error running XP SP2 (USA) with 1gb memory. I've shut down my antivirus software and killed tons of processes, no idea what the issue is.
The output from process explorer is attached.

no easy solution here.
download this (http://www.teamcti.com/pview/prcview.htm).
run prcview.exe, processes->memory (when pcsx2 is stopped with that error and selected in main window of process viewer)
post screenshot for memory range (first column) between 18000000-58000000.
BTW I remember the other italian guy, however I didn't give him solution.

@redworm: If PCSX2 runs but crashes on VMHACK it's most likely game problem.
@infinity:
MSCTF.dll 0x4B3C0000 0x50000
msctfime.ime 0x4DC30000 0x2E000
AFAIK msctfime.ime is loaded if You have input locale Japanese/Chinese (I've seen IME pad also however not sure how to disable it) - try to get rid of it (uninstall locales, or maybe just remove it from input locale). otherwise You're out of luck. MSCTF and most likely other DLLs are related to this.

You're out of luck with 0.9.2
kernel32.dll 0x4F2B0000 0xEE000
ole32.dll 0x4FEC0000 0x126000
You can try to rebase these two (tool to do this is somewhere in this thread) or find out why they're loaded where they're loaded.
Or You can wait for 0.9.4 where
The VM (PCSX2 Virtual Memory Build) issues under Windows XP you have experienced with PCSX2 0.9.2 have been fixed in 0.9.4 thanks to some work by Refraction.

To avoid further confusion I'm closing this thread for now as there's a fix out there that seems to have helped everyone so far with this problem. Thx thc for helping out so many users originally.
For those unable to run VM build download the http://forums.ngemu.com/pcsx2-official-forum/88368-0-9-2-vm-fix.html from here it should make VM build work.
