View Full Version : MACs!

I've got a friend who hates non-mac PCs (a mac IS a PC fgs). He just started arguing with me for an hour on end over MSN about how good Macs are. When I put all the facts out infront of him, and told him he was stubborn, he blocked me. Which was very amusing.

(20:03) DanzaBarr: you wouldnt have to back stuff up if you had a good ol' faithful Macintosh.
(20:03) DanzaBarr: as robust as a giant... thing...
(20:03) Moogleboi: yes you would
(20:03) DanzaBarr: i've never had to back up anyhting
(20:03) Moogleboi: lol
(20:03) DanzaBarr: i've never had a system crash
(20:03) Moogleboi: neither have I
(20:03) Moogleboi: but
(20:04) Moogleboi: if you upgrade to a new OS
(20:04) Moogleboi: then you WILL need to backup, unless you upgrade without formatting
(20:04) DanzaBarr: i've never had to safe boot anything...
(20:04) DanzaBarr: never KNOWN a mac with a virus
(20:04) Moogleboi: I never get viruses
(20:04) Moogleboi: and even then I have realtime virus scanning
(20:05) Moogleboi: I've had one or two from crack sites
(20:05) Moogleboi: but a mac would get them too
(20:05) Moogleboi: might not affect a mac though
(20:05) Moogleboi: depends on the virus
(20:05) DanzaBarr: Macintosh users don't NEED virus protection. It comes free every year
(20:06) Moogleboi: All virus scanners get periodic virus definition updates, many scanners are freeware too
(20:06) Moogleboi: stop being a iDork
(20:06) DanzaBarr: hehe
(20:08) Moogleboi: Windows (we're not talking about PCs here, Mac is a PC too) I suppose it is more targeted for viruses, as the platform has more flexibility and therefore is less secure
(20:17) DanzaBarr: Mac is not a "PC". It is not a "PERSONAL COMPUTER" That is a ****ty name made up by BILL GATES
(20:17) Moogleboi: PC = Personal Computer
(20:17) Moogleboi: P for Personal
C for computer
(20:17) DanzaBarr: **** YOU THINK IM STUPID??!!
(20:17) Moogleboi: Bill Gates did not make up that acronym
(20:18) DanzaBarr: it wasnt around back when it was just IBM and Apple Software
(20:18) DanzaBarr: Microsoft came later
(20:18) DanzaBarr: and brought the term: "PC" with it
(20:18) Moogleboi: you're really anti-microsoft aren't you?
(20:18) DanzaBarr: yup
(20:18) DanzaBarr: Microsoft monopolizes the technology market...
(20:19) DanzaBarr: for some weird reason.
(20:19) Moogleboi: because
(20:19) Moogleboi: they're good at it
(20:19) DanzaBarr: yup. stealing money from people who NEED to be microsoft, because all their friends are
(20:20) DanzaBarr: a load of bollocks if you ask me
(20:20) Moogleboi: and I wonder WHY they have so much money, maybe because they're good at making an OS? sure theres glitches, but it offers a lot of flexibility
(20:20) DanzaBarr: flexibility of what?
(20:20) Moogleboi: a flexible coding platform
(20:20) DanzaBarr: software? Macintosh software is the BEST around. design standard
(20:21) DanzaBarr: if you EVER see a designer using anything other than a Macintosh as his/her main OS, shoot me down.
(20:21) Moogleboi: umm..
(20:21) Moogleboi: Linux is also quite popular too
(20:21) DanzaBarr: A PC was initially MADE on a Macintosh computer
(20:22) DanzaBarr: written using Macintosh software
(20:22) Moogleboi: IBM o.O
(20:22) DanzaBarr: Linux is for jessies who don't want to take sides
(20:22) DanzaBarr: IBM my ass
(20:22) Moogleboi: Linux is for what?
(20:22) Moogleboi: Linux is quite a decent OS
(20:22) Moogleboi: ever used it?
(20:22) DanzaBarr: All design and/or production of products=Macintosh
(20:23) DanzaBarr: Linux? no. i don't like the interface
(20:23) Moogleboi: oh
(20:23) DanzaBarr: microsoft is bad enough
(20:23) Moogleboi: there's plenty of Linux interfaces
(20:23) DanzaBarr: Linux is kinda... 'raw'
(20:23) Moogleboi: take Ubuntu for example
(20:23) DanzaBarr: like there's coding seeping around the sides
(20:24) DanzaBarr: it isn't a piece of art, like a Macintosh is.
(20:25) DanzaBarr: i mean the casing
(20:25) DanzaBarr: not the panels
(20:25) DanzaBarr: what it looks like, as a piece of furniture
(20:27) DanzaBarr: http://japan.cnet.com/media/2005/photo/050112_mac/050112macmini6.jpg
(20:27) DanzaBarr: this is style
(20:29) DanzaBarr: now, would you prefer that, or THIS in your mod-decor living room http://www.esvet.com/media/BIG-PC+1FAM20.gif
(20:29) Moogleboi: dude
(20:29) Moogleboi: there's so many PC cases to choose from
(20:29) Moogleboi: mine's black with silver stripes
(20:29) Moogleboi: it looks hot
(20:30) Moogleboi: the buttons on the bezel light up
(20:30) Moogleboi: and cube PCs are very popular
(20:30) DanzaBarr: as hot as this? http://images.apple.com/pr/photos/iMac/imac-medres.jpg
(20:30) Moogleboi: ew yes
(20:30) DanzaBarr: ^that will be a design icon for years to come
(20:30) Moogleboi: I don't like that mac... IMHO
(20:31) DanzaBarr: this was the upgrade http://cache.gizmodo.com/gadgets/images/imac.jpg
(20:31) DanzaBarr: that one hehe
(20:31) Moogleboi: it's kinda... not my taste
(20:32) Moogleboi: I don't mind the cube mac
(20:32) Moogleboi: but I don't like the other mac designs
(20:32) Moogleboi: HAAHAAHAHA!
(20:33) Moogleboi: ARE YOU JOKING?
NO MULTI BUTTON MOUSE
(20:33) DanzaBarr: ...?
(20:33) DanzaBarr: so?
(20:33) Moogleboi: OH GOD, PLEASE TELL ME YOU GET A SCROLL WEEL
(20:33) DanzaBarr: what are the other buttons for?
(20:33) DanzaBarr: yes. and side buttonsd
(20:33) DanzaBarr: "Mighty Mouse"
(20:33) DanzaBarr: the wheel goes sideways and diagonal
(20:34) Moogleboi: I tried one, it seemed very uncomfortable
(20:34) DanzaBarr: it looks like a little 'nipple'
(20:34) Moogleboi: the whole pushing down the entire mouse thing
(20:34) DanzaBarr: http://bounav.free.fr/mods/vintage_mighty_mouse/original_mighty_mouse.jpg
(20:35) Moogleboi: Glaven.org: Why I hate Mac OSX (http://www.glaven.org/archives/2005/03/why_i_hate_mac_1.html)
(20:35) DanzaBarr: but.. why have a button, if you don't need one? that's what Mac is all about: simplicity and style
(20:35) DanzaBarr: "You wouldn't have those problems if you paid $800 too much for your laptop!"
(20:35) DanzaBarr: that is untrue
(20:35) DanzaBarr: Macs are equally priced
(20:36) DanzaBarr: and you GET what you pay for
(20:36) Moogleboi: wow
(20:36) Moogleboi: and you said
(20:36) Moogleboi: about your 16,000 quid PC
(20:36) DanzaBarr: PC??
(20:36) Moogleboi: sorry, MAC
(20:36) DanzaBarr: what PC?
(20:36) DanzaBarr: "Mac"
(20:36) Moogleboi: waaay overpriced
(20:36) Moogleboi: that technology is way overpriced
(20:36) DanzaBarr: oh yeah... but that one is the best commercial Computer in sale in the world
(20:37) Moogleboi: 8. Price : Still pricey. The hardware is far, far more scarce than PC hardware, and while that gives them more 'quality control', it still also gives them more control over you - because they have you by the short and curlies.
(20:38) DanzaBarr: i'll say "untrue" but you'll think i'm lying
(20:38) DanzaBarr: A Macintosh offers the most versatile OS, and software
(20:39) Moogleboi: wow, I totally agree with the first comment
(20:40) Moogleboi: "I'm glad to see that someone feels the same as I do. I'm tired of listening to people who paid way too much for way too little talk about how great it is.

Posted by: Heywood at March 30, 2005 7:45 PM"
(20:41) DanzaBarr: i tell you- it's a LIE!
(20:41) Moogleboi: lol
(20:41) DanzaBarr: Macs aren't expensive!!
(20:41) Moogleboi: I can poke you with anything Mac, and you go nuts XD
(20:42) DanzaBarr: PC will die
(20:42) Moogleboi: oh dear god
(20:42) DanzaBarr: can you see the future, without a really cool white computer?
(20:42) Moogleboi: a mac IS a PC
(20:42) DanzaBarr: nope
(20:42) Moogleboi: *bangs head*
(20:42) DanzaBarr: im afraid not
(20:43) Moogleboi: just cus it's branded Mac, doesn't make it any less of a PC
(20:43) Moogleboi: my PC is branded Aires
(20:43) DanzaBarr: "Personal Computer"??! I would not describe my Mac as 'Personal'
(20:43) DanzaBarr: Because Mac is like a community
(20:43) Moogleboi: dot dot dot
(20:44) Moogleboi: (said in a very amuzed voice)
(20:44) DanzaBarr: your point?
(20:44) Moogleboi: my point is that your opinions about macs are a bit stubborn and so are your opinions about PCs
(20:44) DanzaBarr: no
(20:45) Moogleboi: your looking at a very small corner of the picture
(20:45) DanzaBarr: about the monopolization of the technological future, and the danger of every one of us slipping back and watching ugly, ugly pieces of plastic with "Microsoft" slapped on the side, slowly fill our homes.
(20:46) DanzaBarr: that's my view
(20:46) Moogleboi: umm
(20:46) Moogleboi: Microsoft don't make PCs
(20:46) Moogleboi: they make peripherals such as mouses and keyboards
(20:46) DanzaBarr: "Windows" "Microsoft" "PC" they all mean the same to me
(20:46) Moogleboi: but they don't make motherboards, CPUs
(20:46) DanzaBarr: it's all Mr. Bill Gates's cash flow
(20:46) DanzaBarr: *Gates'
(20:47) Moogleboi: Bill Gates does not get profit from the sale of PC peripherals
(20:47) Moogleboi: it goes towards lots of companies that MAKE the peripherals
(20:47) DanzaBarr: oh. you mean like "DELL" and "VAIO"...
(20:47) DanzaBarr: right?
(20:48) Moogleboi: they are not owned by microsoft
(20:48) Moogleboi: and Dell and Sony do not make parts
(20:48) DanzaBarr: yeah... i suspect some involvement...
(20:48) Moogleboi: they package PCs
(20:48) Moogleboi: INTEL and AMD make CPUs
(20:48) DanzaBarr: -yeah. I'll make a point on that sa well
(20:48) Moogleboi: A-Bit, ECS and other companies make motherboards
(20:49) Moogleboi: Creative make sound cards
(20:49) Moogleboi: there's LOTS of companies
(20:49) Moogleboi: and the majority of them have nothing to do with Microsoft
(20:49) DanzaBarr: The design is lost, on how many different factories a PC gets shoved through. Everything Mac is well... Mac.
(20:49) DanzaBarr: What do you want? a chunk of grey plastic?
(20:50) Moogleboi: the parts of a Mac are developed by many companies
(20:50) Moogleboi: and stop relating stuff to the case
(20:50) DanzaBarr: So why do PCS LOOK LIKE A PIECE OF ****?!
(20:50) DanzaBarr: there IS NO STYLE!
(20:50) Moogleboi: because not everyone can afford a decent case
(20:50) DanzaBarr: there IS NO SEXINESS!
(20:50) Moogleboi: yes there is
(20:50) DanzaBarr: there is no sleek, silky, white, pure
(20:51) Moogleboi: have you looked at some of the cube cases?
(20:51) Moogleboi: Shuttle Europe - Home (http://eu.shuttle.com/en/DesktopDefault.aspx/tabid-2/)
(20:51) DanzaBarr: a cube??! HOW ORIGINAL!!! **** NO!
(20:51) Moogleboi: put that in your pipe and smoke it
(20:51) Moogleboi: there's lots of sizes of PCs
cubes, rectangles etc.
(20:52) DanzaBarr: you mean the black blobs in all the school it rooms?
(20:52) Moogleboi: theres lots of designs
(20:52) DanzaBarr: oh JOY!!! COLOURS!!

(20:52) DanzaBarr: DESIGNS! MAKE IT YOUR OWN!
(20:52) Moogleboi: heck, there's lots of similar designs to the mac
but if it's not mac, it's automatically **** in your opinion
(20:53) Moogleboi: you've just Kicked yourself in the face
(20:53) Moogleboi: Macs aren't that customizable
(20:53) DanzaBarr: i know
(20:53) DanzaBarr: that's the point
(20:53) DanzaBarr: they have a look,
(20:53) DanzaBarr: and it stays that way
(20:53) Moogleboi: not everyone likes the Mac
(20:53) DanzaBarr: because it's cool
(20:53) DanzaBarr: and white
(20:54) DanzaBarr: "not everyone likes the Mac" that's the killer point is it?
(20:54) Moogleboi: you might like the mac
doesn't mean it's right
(20:54) DanzaBarr: okay, it's right for, design; stly;
(20:54) Moogleboi: your not just having your own opinion
your yelling it around and pushing everything else down
(20:54) DanzaBarr: *style;
(20:54) DanzaBarr: manufacture;
(20:55) DanzaBarr: art;
(20:55) DanzaBarr: culturisation;
(20:55) DanzaBarr: futurism; cubism
(20:55) Moogleboi: it's a fricken white cube fgs
(20:55) DanzaBarr: no, no
(20:55) DanzaBarr: it's a piece of art
(20:55) Moogleboi: this pen... IS A PIECE OF ART
(20:55) Moogleboi: *chews it*
(20:56) DanzaBarr: okay, okay... but your pen won't be the design icon of the century
(20:56) Moogleboi: you never know
(20:56) DanzaBarr: i have nothing else to say
(20:56) Moogleboi: cool
(20:56) Moogleboi: still hate PCs then?
(20:56) DanzaBarr: because: "you never know" is pretty pathetic
(20:57) DanzaBarr: I hate the way that PCs monopolize the technological future, and danger every one of us slipping back and watching ugly, ugly pieces of plastic with "Microsoft" slapped on the side, slowly fill our homes. I've already said that
(20:58) Moogleboi: your very wrong though
(20:58) Moogleboi: I did explain microsoft is mainly only in the software business and not the hardware business
(20:58) Moogleboi: and that not all Pcs are slabs
(20:58) Moogleboi: but your so stubborn

Feel free to argue on the points that both of us where making

(20:22) Moogleboi: ever used it?
(20:23) DanzaBarr: Linux? no. i don't like the interface
oh dear, contradicting himself isn't he?
nothing is more disgusting than fanboys.

Although mogster, i can't say i agree with your wondering at why m$ has so much money. have you EVER taken a look at the prices for their OS'? The OS alone costs more than a mac!
most of their non-windows software is stolen ideas. And even that is made riddicculusly poorly.
Word is what, 15 years in the making now? And since the 1997 release the only change made is interface, and little at that! (yet the newest v costs tons more than the 1997 release ever did)
secondly, when you buy a comp/laptop you're doomed to get a windows copy with you if you're not carefull.
And really, apart from the interface becoming an eyesore and extremely user-hostile, has there really been an improvement from win2k to xp in anything else than boot time? not anything whatsoever! yeat price is like fife times the price for win2k!

if he thinks mac offers diversity, then compared to windows he is 500% right. but compared to linux he is 75% wrong XD

I've never like MACs... I hate them infact. I wouldn't call myself a PC fanboy though...its just what I use. Give me Windows 2000 or XP, and I'll be happy.

The one thing I hate MACs is that they ARE unreliable from what I've seen. In my Anatomy Lab at school, we had eight new MACs to use to take quizes each week. Ironically, two to four of them crashed/broke/mouse broke, etc every week. I've seen this happen in a couple class rooms, where the darn things just refuse to work. That, and the mouses are unresponsive and uncomfortable. I get a full workout just moving the mouse from the bottom of the screen to the top :p

I've never used Linux, so I have no opinion about it. I'm content with Windows though, so I have no need to change.

Moogleboi says:
it's a branded "PC" with a terrible OS. NO one uses it for programs, designers DONT use it, it's just a OS for people who like to be limited, and don't mind the Simplicity of it.
Further more, the MAC's hardware isn't anything special
DanzaBarr says:
okay. 1: it's not a PC2. It has NEVER crashed on me 3. Artists use it for programs. Artists like me 4. My dad's a designer. Every designer I know, who knows a designer, who knows a designer will tell you: "designers use Macs"
it's as limited r unlimited as you want it to be
Moogleboi says:
wow, can I uninstall it? and install windows?
cus that never used to be the case
DanzaBarr says:
Mac's hardware, and software: isn't an issue. It's the innovation, and the purpose, that drives the Macintosh industry, that makes it special. It is there for those people who want something cool sitting on their desktop. something that doesn't malfunction, something that doesn't have to be continually backed up, something that runs design programs like silk, something that's dependable, trendy
DanzaBarr says:
futuristic
DanzaBarr says:
something that will change the future of computing
Moogleboi says:
it's built on century old unix
DanzaBarr says:
yes
I am proud to say: "I use a Mac" because I haven't spent my money at "PC WORLD" or "DELL Ltd" or whatever. My money has gone straight to the creators. my money will be funding the production of the greatest Hardware/software company in the world (in my opinion hehe)

Hehe you can get photoshop and itunes in win-downs too.

although, the mouse is just getting used to. Everyone who claims Mac's are unreliable are using 1995 Versions or something like that. And the interface is more eye pleasing, and beyond that it doesn't have any of the user-hostilities (or so called "user-friendlynes') that windows has.

But beyond that; the mouse sucks, no right mouse button :( (big mistake apple). And it doesn't come with too many of it's own programs. you have to get too much yourself. Either through frantic internet searching/piracy or spending $$$ on professional made crap.

For gaveuptomorrow: The only problems whatsoever that i've found in linux is that it's hard to run games. And only ATI has bothered to make a proper driver installer, Nvidia makes you go through tons of terminal commands.

Though once you're used to it (after MAXIMUMLY 2 hours, unless you don't learn intently) you'll wish windows could just die, so the game developers would make their games for linux.
There's not much else to say, the interface is very similar to windows, just much fore comfortable and simply animations (you'll think you already have drivers when you don't, seriously!). Althoughyou may end up missing the "folder" view to the left when exploring your computer, but not for very long since you're barely gonna need to explore anything else than removable devices.

Beyond hte folder view, there is one HUGE negative to linux. The permission system sucks. You can't make/log into a user that has permission to do whatever, you've always got to enter passwords etc. And when you don't get the chance to you're really left in the dust, but this barely ever happens. Although this keeps your dear hackers out :).

I have a right mouse button, in fact, macs these days are shipped with a superior mouse to a lot of pc packages.

I changed to mac a couple of months back after hating macs to the max (lols) for years-- Mostly because I work somewhere in between the roles of coder and designer (yeah, one of those annoying people). And funnily enough its been the best move I've ever made. I was using linux for a long time, and I love it to bits, but there is no way to run a lot of the apps that I needed to us (AKA Fotoshop anyone?) as well as the fact that as an operating system-- for a coder, its just FAR too distracting...

something like-- XOMG if I just change this one config line I'll get me some 3 extra frames in tux racer without any proprietry drivers at all... in fact maybe I'll go rewrite some of the gamecode and it might become playable! sweet. --3 hours later you've lost your job and are sleeping in a box :p. Oh... and re-installing every second day to try out a different distro, or the new updates on this or that... lols... good times...

I actually find it hillarious how cocky apple are, but I dont see why they shouldn't be. People say the fact that they're not customisable etc. is a fault, but you know-- its not. It means you get a peice of equipment that wont break. It means (as a developer) you have some idea of the scope of your target audience. It means they can do more with less resources, which means they have more resources to spend on putting cool stuff in.

I also like not having to carry a box to lans. ;). (wtf dude...! wheres your box? in my screen. *friends head explodes*)

As far as Windows goes... Actually, I'm quite excited about microsofts prospects-- in a few years they're going to actually start writing new code (a couple of lines at first, but give them time), and then a while after that updating their operating systems. Its in the investor roadmap on their website. Course you should probably add 5 or 6 years onto that for squashing the bugs-- fair go though, the bug department is entirely staffed by blind torso people who type with their noses.... dont ever say that microsoft isn't an equal opportunity employer.

My god I'm bitter towards them.

Lols. Good for me.

Dark Sephiroth...

ATI has made an installer for linux? Wow... I remember a couple of months ago you wouldn't touch an ATI card if you used linux because the installer (and the drivers for that matter) were complete rubbish. Good distros should manage installation of these things for you though... it is important.

As far as the permissions thing goes, its a much more robust permission system than windows-- and you can set it up if you like so that you can log in to a user that can do anything... you'd just be mad to do that, because then anything that was run while you were logged on as that user could change any configuration file on the computer ;)-- remember most of the operating system is pretty raw.

...

Apple has got it right though. You can buy a mac today and install windows on it. What'll happen though, inevitably (and they all know this) is that you will end up booting into OSX, and sooner or later just getting rid of the windows partition... if you cant bare to do without windows you could run it inside the mac operating system at full speed on a different desktop (or monitor).

And dont forget people, anything you can run natively in linux you can run natively on a mac, and most of the time natively on windows. So each operating system is at LEAST as diverse in software as linux.

I should give up ranting... its worse for me than smoking, I swear.

i used to be like that mac addict back in the early mid 90s. That's when I actually first learned to argue subjects no one would ever bend on! You can thank Macs, and my school for using them, for the way I am today!

darth sephiroth,

... And only ATI has bothered to make a proper driver installer, Nvidia makes you go through tons of terminal commands. ...
I've never had the joy of owning an ATi card, but from what I hear, I am much better off with my NVIDIA card. :)

... Beyond hte folder view, there is one HUGE negative to linux. The permission system sucks. You can't make/log into a user that has permission to do whatever, you've always got to enter passwords etc. And when you don't get the chance to you're really left in the dust, but this barely ever happens. Folder view? I really don't know what you are talking about here. I've got a side pane in Nautilus that shows my "folders".

Permissions are a good thing. You really don't want every user to have write (or even read) access to the whole system. And the "root" account is the one account with access to everything. (You don't happen to be using Ubuntu, are you?)

I just got an MX Revolution (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2135,CONTENTID=12134), it's compatible with Macs, and it has more than one button. ;) (The scroll wheel is the bomb on this thing, super freaking fast.)

The happy meal explodes when it breaks while the mac-laden just runs away and hides in a mountain range where you can't find it.

It's more complex than that. It blows if you put it behind a window, or put the window on it.

I have a right mouse button, in fact, macs these days are shipped with a superior mouse to a lot of pc packages.
Many PC sellers offer different mice and keyboards. Dell for example offers a budget optical mouse and plain keyboard, all the way up to a laser keyboard and mouse. The particular model I randomly looked up offers 7 different sets of keyboards and mice, in addition to none at all.
I also like not having to carry a box to lans. ;). (wtf dude...! wheres your box? in my screen. *friends head explodes*)
What do you play at LAN parties? The absolute fastest iMacs buyable at the Apple store have either an ATI X1600 or nVidia 7600GT.. By PC standards, these are budget cards. Also, does your friend live in a cave? Apple has been putting the video display and CPU in the same box for ... * a few years * (http://lowendmac.com/compact/bytecover.shtml). Oh and they have these things called "laptops" that have the screen and CPU in the same chassis too. WACKY!!! STOP THE PRESSES!

I owned a G4 1.25ghz for a while, and when I absolutely loathed Linux enough at work, I brought it in and used it as my regular work PC. Did it get the job done? Yes. Would a Windows PC do the same job? Yes. OS X was cute and all, but at the end of the day I was using a $1500 MAC to do what I could easily do with a $500 PC.

15 years ago you could find some niche software the MAC had that a PC didn't, but that's gone away. People who still believe that a MAC is "good for graphics design" are still living in those old days, and still regurgitating FUD. They may as well say "640k should be enough for anyone, since Bill Gates said so!".. Old, outdated beliefs.
