For how little I've listen to quo vadis I've always been impressed by the drummer. I have a qusetion, is there another band named that because I remember when checking them out I found a instrumental song that was really calm and quiet (very heavy on leads with the guitar), if anyone knows about that please let me know.
industrian
May 27th, 2006, 20:11
Have you got a sample of the tune? Quo Vadis have a good couple of instrumentals.
As for other bands called Quo Vadis, there is a Polish death metal (http://quovadis.metal.pl/) and a Hungarian rock band (http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pageartist.cfm?bandID=252096) both with that name as well. :p
EDIT
I'd give that Polish Quo Vadis a listen to. ;) They have some pretty good tunes. Obviously a cannae unnerstand any a it, but it sounds good. :p It seems incredibly militant. Maybe get KanedA in to translate for us. :p
NKWD (http://www.metalpromo.com/mp3/QuoVadisNKWD.mp3) - Fundamental Law of The Universe and all of Existence: ANY song with the Hymn of the Soviet Union in it IS AWESOME.

They do have a really werid sound, I could get into it a little.
Anyhow that's now the sound of the quo vadis I remember (it was like 4 years ago so no I don't have a clip) and how I remember them kind of having a Twilightning sound almost but more rock like EQing on the instruments.
I would seach using limewire or something but I've had so much trouble with that thing...

So last night this girl gave me an album of Epica for my b'day, yay :D
Here's (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7181717899248741168&q=epica) one song of the album, note that this is a ballad and most of their songs are fast paced gothic metal songs, with some nice grunts as well. So far I really like the album and I'm getting into them more and more. Hopefull I'll be able to see them in June, because the gig of theirs I was supposed to see, well we didn't :(
One thing that really sucks with this album is that I can't play it on my computer. It forces me to listen to the 128kbit WMA files that are on the cd, ignoring the CDA on it, which aren't shown in explorer either. Since I want to listen to this album in the pure way it comes I'm forced to put it in the DC. Does anyone know a workaround so that I can listen to the (cloaked?) CDA files instead. Bah... copy protection, once again buyers are suffering. If I'd have wanted an illegal copy it wouldn't have cost me any effort anyway.
Ah well, let's not b!tch about it too much, so far I really like the album and I might write a review about it for my blog. And man I can not wait for next week when hopefully my Sonata and Hammerfall dvd's will arrive.

Epica is one of the coolest bands out there, I love them. Very very good with the keys and her voice is very very natural where her operatic style doesn't seems forced like Tarja from nightwish. One thing I don't really like (but isn't really a bad thing) and how little the guitars play in the band, but it's not always like that. Within Temptation also has the lack of guitars, but are very strong with the keys and vocals.
Cid Highwind
May 29th, 2006, 21:45
Well I have to agree that the guitars are a bit more on the background on this album, but it never bothered me because the symphonic parts make up for it, so to me there isn't an emptiness left by it.
Within Temptation is a nice band, but it's become more of a poppish rockband with symphonic and gothic aspects. Their sound just isn't metal enough for me, and I can't stand seeing Sharon move her hands all the time. Also, that lumberjack makes grunts sound like wet farts. He should take a few classes at Graveworm :p Or maybe he shouldn't, because it will scare away the largest part of their 14 year old wannabe gothic fanbase.

David Shankle Group - Ashes To Ashes
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8511473351920709182
The guy used to play guitar for Manowar: enough said really. The song is pure American Power Metal: Fast guitars, fast keyboards, Halford/ D!ckinson-esque vocals, overall a fantastic song. You can't go wrong with guitar vs. keyboard duels. Plus, nekkid women. :)
Cid Highwind
May 30th, 2006, 09:50
Alright, you convinced me, but only with that final part :p
Edit:
Well it was a nice song but nothing special, I couldn't stand the vocals. The solo was alright but all other things about the song (including Matrix-like effects) hint at this band never becoming a headliner of their own, at least not in large venues.

MY LIFESTYLE DETERMINES MY DEATHSTYLE!!!1111!!!!
:p ;)
The thing I really hated about St. Anger was the fact that no magazine I read at the time gave it anything less than 8/10 which was incredibly high. That and the stupid argument that is "if any other band had made it, it would have been a great album." The fact of the matter is that Metallica purposly have declined in quality and have used crap arguments to back up their case. Whereas, bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Manowar, Slayer, etc have not. The fact that it was the same band that wrote "One", "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "The Unforgiven" that wrote "Frantic" just made it even worse.
lol @ heretic :D

see, this is what pisses me off with rabid fanboys (not accusing you guys of anything....but almost).
Metallica will NEVER EVER EVER NEVER make more songs like Fight Fire with Fire, Trapped Under Ice, or Damage, Inc. sorry. it will never happen. metallica evolved, they changed. (didnt i already post this same thing somewhere in this thread??)
when St. Anger came out, it had been such a break from load/reload that everyone was saying...ok well maybe they're going to go old school! but they didn't. they kept evolving. everyone was expecting their favorite album, part 2. people were let down by NOT hearing Master of Puppets II, or ...And Justice For All II.
that same thing happened with Tool. they take a fairly long time between albums (counting major releases only, 93, 96, 01, 06) to evolve. when their new album came out, people were MAJORLY disappointed! so many people were expecting Lateralus II (their last album, because it was absolutely stunning) that they were blinded by the fact that the new album is probably one of the greatest albums of all time--but in a vastly different way than their other albums.
Metallica is different. live with it. if you don't like their new music, that's fine. no one is forcing you to listen to it. Metallica produced more amazing music than most bands could ever imagine to produce, and now, 25 years after they got their start, they've changed their style and you're complaining about it?? i find it really hard to believe your statement that metallica have purposely declined in quality. WTF???
for the record, i like Frantic. in fact, i like St. Anger as an album, i used to listen to it all the time. i used my mind powers to block out the ****ty recording, and i never listen to lyrics anyway, so it wasn't that hard.
once you get over your preconceptions over what music/movies/people/anything "should" be--you will enjoy your world a lot more. of course, there is nothing wrong with not liking St. Anger. hell, there is nothing wrong with not liking Master of Puppets. opinions--everyone's got 'em ;)

Reminds me a bit of what I had with the latest albums of both Graveworm and After Forever. Graveworm turned from a gothic/blackmetal style to nu/blackmetal, leaving out a lot of good things they used to have like violins and bagpipes. Comparing it to the masterpieces of their old albums is not the best thing to do because it will disappoint you, but on its own a lot of songs are pretty good, and nice to sing along with as well. And on top of that, the artwork rocks, got a shirt and a poster, much to my family's delight :p
After Forever went from a gothic metal sound to a more progressive one I think. At first I didn't like it, now I try to focus on the good things, and I like it even more than the old albums.
The only new album that leaves me permanently disappointed is Edguy's Rocket Ride. Their old albums had some sort of own atmosphere, but the new album just doesn't cut it, especially after their masterpiece Hellfire Club which recieved rave reviews.
An artist can never do things right. If they give you more of what you wanted to hear you'll be sad because it's the same thing over again (Dragonforce anyone?). If they release something new you're disappointed because it's different ;)

Anyone remember Radiohead? After their release of "Kid A" everyone thought WTF???!?!?!! No one had expected such an album from a band like Radiohead. OK, they already did some experimental stuff in "OK Computer" already, but no one could have prepared their fans for the weird sounds "Kid A" delivered. And not just a few of them hoped that Radiohead would go back to the roots in their next album.
Fortunately they didn't ;), although even I have to say that "Amnesiac" was a little too - well - exotic. Some songs took me about seven auditions to recognize their inner beauty ("Like Spinning Plates", for example), but nevertheless Radiohead proved their musical expertise and their creative spirit once again.
Okay, comparing Radiohead to Metallica might be a difficult job, indeed, but I wish for Metallica that they won't give in to the main stream. If they are going to change their style, I would be the last one stopping them.

I only defend bands that change their sound, if it's for the better. Not being a true metallica fan, it doesn't piss me off to see them go Nuage (which is just crap all around, why do that to music, it's rap with distortion).
So, let's bring up how In Flames change. Though out all their albums they had a differnt sound, changing, you can still tell it's in flames, but still very dffernt. They kept using differnt melody's but at first it was more of a midevil type sound where as time when on, it was their own little thing almost, what sounded cool, they found them self. Then R2R came out, over all, not a bad album, but filled with a bunch or trash or just nothingness and stuff keyboard stuff. Their next album was even more of this, very little guitar work, and just layers or to break it down nothing. Yes they are differnt, but I woudln't say it's for the best, why did they do it? I don't know, can I guess? Yes, I believe to fit into the pop culture to the best that the media will allow them too.

Evolution is when you go from "Kill 'em All" to "Ride The Lightning." Regression is when you go from ReLoad to St. Anger. Metallica did nothing but go into the studio, knock out a crap album, and expect it to sell.
I wasn't disappointed that they hadn't made a sequel to any of their albums. I was just disappointed that they made a totally, and utterly crap album.
I can see the argument though. If Limp Bizkit were to have made St. Anger it would have been "Awesome!" but Metallica are capable of AT LEAST ONE GUITAR SOLO.
that same thing happened with Tool. they take a fairly long time between albums (counting major releases only, 93, 96, 01, 06) to evolve. when their new album came out, people were MAJORLY disappointed! so many people were expecting Lateralus II (their last album, because it was absolutely stunning) that they were blinded by the fact that the new album is probably one of the greatest albums of all time--but in a vastly different way than their other albums.
There was the same response to Manowar's new sound on "Louder than Hell" ... but that album just happened to be freaking awesome so the naysayers had nothing to stand on. The same happened with the Manic Street Preachers after they released "Everything Must Go" which was more pop-orientated than the 100% nihlism of "The Holy Bible" ... but once again, great songs like "A Design For Life", "Kevin Carter" and "Australia" faded the screams of naysayers to a mere whimper. St. Anger however had a different sound and was crap. So it had nothing to stand on.
Metallica is different. live with it. if you don't like their new music, that's fine. no one is forcing you to listen to it. Here's an article from Transcending The Mundane (http://basementbar.com/DefaultN1.asp):
"You look at Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, and it's a trip to see bands that were big influences on us and not relevant anymore."
-Kirk Hammett, Denver Post interview, 4/4/04
Claims that Metallica have “evolved” also need to be examined in light of what their peers have achieved since 1983. Let’s take a quick look:
King Diamond and Mercyful Fate—Both acts continue to release quality albums to this day, with many fans feeling that 9 was the best Fate release since Don’t Break The Oath. The King and company have never sacrificed any heaviness in their music, which is still intense, complex and rooted firmly in black/thrash metal.
Venom—In 1997, Cronos and Mantas reunited to reform Venom and released Cast In Stone. Its successor, Resurrection was arguably one of the band’s best, with the focus still on raw, primitive and heavy black metal.
Slayer—Slayer is still a giant in the thrash world, and never strayed from the path they etched so permanently with 1986’s Reign in Blood. Featured at Ozzfest after Ozzfest, it is clear that Slayer could have altered their sound long ago to please the Nu-metal market. They never have.
Overkill—2003’s Killbox 13 confirmed Overkill’s dedication to quality thrash metal. Their live show, too, is as ferocious as ever. Despite significant airtime on MTV in the early 90s, Overkill, too, never cashed in to market trends.
Megadeth—There will never be another Rust In Peace (nor a Peace Sells…, for that matter), but Mustaine has stayed true to his formula over the years and has refused to alter his unique vocal style, unlike Hetfield.
Iron Maiden—An immensely popular band, Iron Maiden continues to Up the Irons all these years later, with albums every bit as worthy as the ones they created in their prime. Brave New World and Dance Of Death, as a matter of fact, sound like they could have been the next two albums released after Piece Of Mind.
Bathory—Before his tragic death at age 39, Quorthon was the ultimate example of an extreme metaller who truly had evolved over the years. From the proto-black metal of The Return... to the thrash of Octagon to the epic Viking metal of the Nordland albums, Quorthon was always wandering, experimenting and keeping it f***ing heavy. R.I.P.
Metallica also needs to be evaluated in light of what the best bands in metal today are doing. Those of you who think Metallica “kicks ass” really need to check out groups like Nevermore, Opeth, Nile, Into Eternity, Dimmu Borgir and Children of Bodom. Or, better yet, check out today’s best thrash bands: Testament, Dew-Scented, The Haunted, Darkane, Killswitch Engage, Hypocrisy, Disillusion, Susperia, Carnal Forge, Coroner, Exodus, Scarve, Destruction, Divine Decay, Callenish Circle, Meshuggah, Brainstorm, Cephalic Carnage, Pathos, Strapping Young Lad, etc. Then you’ll get a sense of where Metallica might be today if they still were dedicated to their craft, their art, instead of simply amassing money.
Actually, Metallica would be far ahead of all those groups today if they had remained hungry. Think of what Master Of Puppets might have evolved into 20 years later if the band had continued to push themselves as musicians. It would be something we haven’t even heard yet, most likely. Something powerful, visceral and maybe even life-changing (as so many have said Master was).
But you don’t “evolve” by becoming lazier. Hetfield does little to counter the argument:
“Sure, the arrangements are simpler. It's a reaction to …And Justice For All which was really, really anal. Every little bit was worked out. The arrangement was so orchestrated that it got really stiff, and when we were on tour it got really boring. So we knew we had to move on and The Black Album was pretty much the opposite. I think Load is even more simplistic, in a way. First, we chose riffs that were great, and Lars and I would go jam on them. Then, instead of trying to force one riff with another riff, it was like, 'Let's jam on it,' and we'd see what came out of that.”
I leave you to determine if the riffs on Load were better than riffs like “Blackened” and “The Shortest Straw.” I can tell you that I personally saw Metallica on tour for Justice and there was nothing boring about it. They were still in fine form and the songs sounded huge. Metallica telling us they’ve “grown” while admitting the songs are far simpler is like Bush telling us that it was the right decision to invade Iraq even though zero weapons of mass destruction were found there—it’s not true no matter how many times you say it.
Sadly, someone even casually familiar with the metal underground knows the truth—Metallica hasn’t been artistically relevant in the genre in over 15 years.
And the Master of Profits rolls on. General Admission for St. Anger tour: $77. Metallica Fan Club subscription: $25 - $60. Metallica Babydoll T-shirt: $30. Metallica Floor Mats: $34.99. Mr. Ulrich, one final self-serving, delusional quote to take us out, please?:
"It's so beating. I can understand now how challenging [St. Anger] was. Compared to a song like ‘Wherever I May Roam,’ it sounds like World War III. It makes The Black Album sound like Bon Jovi or something. I can understand that some of the people into the more straightforward things we've done can be scared [listening to St. Anger]. It's OK to be scared and overwhelmed and challenged."
- Lars Ulrich, Rocky Mountain News, 3/31/04
once you get over your preconceptions over what music/movies/people/anything "should" be--you will enjoy your world a lot more. of course, there is nothing wrong with not liking St. Anger. hell, there is nothing wrong with not liking Master of Puppets. opinions--everyone's got 'em ;)
I go into nothing thinking of what something "should be." If it were up to me every Laibach album would sound like Opus Dei but they evolved steadily, not listening to anyone, just doing s**t on their own. In 1996 they released "Jesus Christ Superstars" - an awesome album, a metal album. Then they released nothing after it. In 2003 they released "WAT", which (apart from vocals) is totally different sounding. It's techno. I didn't care because it sounded fresh, relevant and left me feeling that this album had "something more" and I accepted that evolution because it was a true evolution.
In 2003 Metallica, after a similar gap, released something that I bought, listened to, but did not feel anything whatsoever. Believe me, I wanted to like St. Anger... but it could not warrant a place on my CD collection. Not even next to "Significant Other."
Ok, about metallica yet: i'll live with the old albums. kill em all 'till justice for all. I'll be ok. ;)

Evolution is when you go from "Kill 'em All" to "Ride The Lightning." Regression is when you go from ReLoad to St. Anger. Metallica did nothing but go into the studio, knock out a crap album, and expect it to sell.
so, since i like "And justice for all" less than Master of Puppets, does that mean they regressed? umm, no. i like St Anger more than ReLoad, a lot more actually. i've said it before, but Reload has 4 good tracks and a bunch more that i can't stand at all. St. Anger actually kept my attention. and what is that about calling it crap? i like St. Anger a lot more than thousands of other albums, so what does that make those albums? uber crap? does that mean i like a crappy album? and calling it crappy is really subjective term--you might think Tool's "Ænima" is crap, but it's my favorite album of all time. well, see the next quote.
I was just disappointed that they made a totally, and utterly crap album.
I can see the argument though. If Limp Bizkit were to have made St. Anger it would have been "Awesome!" but Metallica are capable of AT LEAST ONE GUITAR SOLO.
totally and utterly crap? turn on the tube and watch any music related station. St. Anger is better than every single thing you will hear if you watch MTV for an hour. period. (unless they are showing the new Tool album for some reason... :p) and umm, what's the big deal about guitar solos? we aren't in the 80s anymore, every single song does NOT need to have a meedley meedley section where the LEAD GUITARIST (what an outdated term that is) shows off how fast he can play arpeggios. this is why i hate Yngwie, his music is so boring, same with many other solo artists. holy crap i can play 12,000 notes a minute! yeah, i dont care. i know that Yngwie or Satriani or Vai are some people's favorite guitarists. well guess what, i'd rather listen to Nick Zinner's songs (that's right, from the punk band Yeah Yeah Yeahs) because they are much more creative, catchy, and interesting to hear than Yngwie wailing on his Arpeggios from Hell (if you've ever seen his instructional video you'll know what i mean)--EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE SIMPLE. i'll talk more about that in a minute.
perhaps we will never truely know if Metallica are satisfied with what they are doing these days. that above article puts their change in a very negative light, but omits one very interesting thing. they talk about how their peers havent sold out, havent given into pressure. well neither has metallica! just because they sell out tours and have expensive merch doesn't mean they've sold out. i mean, since when was Metallica doing commercials? putting out gayboy videos on MTV left and right and up and down? getting consistent radio play? doing all the things that bands like LIMP BIZKIT did? (for the record, i really like limp bizkit, especially significant other) Metallica changed, but for whom? in my lifetime, i never saw metallica change into media pets or MTV's little cashcow money whore. i think that Metallica evolved for themselves, as much as people want to deny it. it's sooooo easy to point the finger and say "they are media whores! they just want money!" but in practice, it's hard to fit that model to where they actually are.
furthermore, the article (and you) diss the apparent simplicity of Metallica's newer music and lack of solos. well, continuing on the track of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, they have REALLY simple music (its punk!) but i find their music much more captivating than a lot of music, hell, even music that was discussed in this thread! it's simplistic, and lacking of solos, but it's catchy and interesting. i'd rather see creativity and a musical flow rather than one dude soloing. and frankly, i was getting really bored of Hammet's solos. he didn't have much that was very interesting after the black album, to me anyway. sometimes it feels like they put in solos just for the sake of solos, like "ok, it's been 3/4 of a song already, play some really high notes real fast and we can finish this thing".
I go into nothing thinking of what something "should be."
i wasnt trying to say "you" specifically--but more like the general audience. you have to admit, it happens so often, and definitely did with such a high stature band, Metallica.
in general, it all comes down to opinion. i REALLY was hoping, from the first day the album came out and i brought it home to listen to, and still am hoping to this day, that Metallica would/will release a remastered version of St. Anger with a better producer. every time i think about Metallica's change over the years, i can't help to wonder what the critics would've said if this album was actually well produced and came out with a good clean sound.
even though i enjoyed all of Metallica's albums, i personally believe that they should've called it quits after S&M. Metallica needs to be disbanded. i understand they still want to make music, but they should all just go their seperate ways. Metallica USED to be my favorite band. hmm, maybe it's MY tastes that are changing? since then, i've fallen more in love with bands like Tool or Rage Against the Machine and changed my focus to accept other genres, from Decapitated to Cibo Matto to The White Stripes to Gorillaz to Yeah Yeah Yeahs to a thousand other bands. Metallica are way down on my list, i honestly have not given them a good listen in a while--even their old music.
Yeah, S&M would finish perfectly :)

A good tribute to St. Anger (http://www.sinister.com.au/_dloads/ms_stanger/ms_stanger.php#).
:p
Metallica needs to be compared to other metal bands out there today because Metallica constantly refer to themselves, and are referred to as a metal band. There's no point whipping out punk bands here, as they are not relevant to Metallica. Comparisons to Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are.
And it's very easy to see that Metallica changed into money-hungry hypocrites. But it just happens to be 1:45am and I'm too tired to go into details. ;)
Personally I think a live album is the best way to go out. But in the world of heavy metal, there is a "never say die" attitude. Bands would rather keep going (as seen with Black Sabbath after Ozzy, Helloween after the Keepers, the Ripper Priest era and the Blaze Bayley Maiden) than call it quits. They'd rather keep going, even if all they were making was innaccurate, fuzzy, and not-as-good records. Metallica had that attitude after Burton died, because they probably felt that they owed it to him to go out and pay homage to him by making the best stuff they possibly could (and they did.) Then after that was done... what could they do? The answer: they kept going out of fear of giving up. I mean, what else could they do?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but to this day I have only really seen one metal band give up and disband (well, metal bands that I give a s**t about) and that is X-Japan. They had a final live tour, disbanded, then hide died, and X-Japan will never ever come back.
To go into further details about this aspect: metal in general is about self-belief and confidence. Bands like Manowar and most power metal bands seek to cultivate the attitude in the listener to not give a s**t about what other people think and to just do their own thing. This attitude also sets in place the fear of giving up, as that represents weakness. I know Laibach aren't relevant, but they once made the statement (that I hold true now as a personal mantra) that "Only God can subdue Laibach. People and things never can." THAT is the attitude of metal. And that attitude is also responsible for bands producing crap instead of admitting defeat (well not for Laibach anyways. :p)

I want to point out how I feel about solo's in general, if it's on guitar or a violin or anything. You don't need them in ever song you write, but what you do need is some form of a lead that is memorable. Not all solo's are fast, in fact I know many band that have riffs in one song with a fast lead that are faster (by far) than a solo is in another one. Solo's are not speed, really it's hard to say what makes a solo, but when you don't do one in a full album when that's what not only your band is known for, but a genre is known for...don't call yourself a metal band onless you put NU in front of it.
Also what one likes, doesn't make it MUSICALLY better because you like it more. I like a lot of screamy stuff (in flames, Dark tranqillity, arch ememy, so on) musically screaming is nothing, but I would rather listen to that than a lot of singing bands. I listen to them for the musical work, if they get ride of that they are nothing. So st. anger with the singing out of key, **** guitar and drum work, is a big NU turn off to me. So pretty much, like it if you want, but understand where it stands.

ok, how's this for a comparison: i like more songs from St. Anger than i do from both Maiden and Priest combined. and i'm being honest, that's not even a joke. so what does that say about personal opinion? (rhetorical question)
But in the world of heavy metal, there is a "never say die" attitude.
yeah, and it sucks. look at Korn--good lord, WHY ARE THEY STILL MAKING MUSIC?? they should've stopped after Issues!
man, if metallica had stopped after cliff died...i dunno. weird. i wonder what would've happened if cliff were still alive...(and so do 500 million other people).
i guess the main thing here is that opinion reigns over everything as far as personal opinion. i'm sure that a lot of people (you silly europeans i mean :p) in this thread have much different opinions of what is awesome these days than me. these power metal type bands that you guys are all talking about...it bores me. i like all the metallica albums. some people wont listen to any non-cliff material.
on a similar note, the new song sounds umm...like a St. Anger B-side (like Chrono pointed out). if people didnt like st anger, i doubt they will like this new track. the existence of a solo and a new producer isnt going to change the fact that they still sound the same as they did three years ago.

one note about metallica, korn, and other bands--their approach is to go into the studio and write music. this surely produces inferior music, you can see the supposed "decline" of Metallica as they became overproduced, same with Korn and about a million other bands.

Well I was more aiming at the fact that whatever they release now comes in the same format as from the Bon Jovi album,
singing - chorus - some more - chorus - guitar solo- chorus x2
The problem is that the quality of their lyrics and the magic of their music has disappeared at the same rate as their long hair. After Keep the Faith These Days was still a good album, though in a different style, and the newer work, especially the singles, are just pop songs with a Bon Jovi sauce. If it wouldn't be Bon Jovi I wonder if it would even make it to the charts.
Worst moment: This left feels wrong, awfully raped classics.
I'd rather see them tour with their old songs than see them head back into the studios again.

The problem is that John's voice isn't what it's used to be. Richie still knows how to reach the high notes, his solo albums are great as well.

About Consign to Oblivion:
I can listen to that album 4 times a night without getting bored. Personally I like Dance of Fate and Mother of Light the best.
Dance of Fate is a great song to get into the album, a good pace, great orchestrated parts, and I love the part where she sings "Everything has a reason for its happening", because of the way they use the instruments at that part.
Mother of Light is a great song as well, fast paced, aggressive and a great part where they are screaming and singing simulaniously. I can't help but grunting along at that point, I have to hear that one live one day.
Did you buy the version that comes with a bonus DVD? Gotta love how the dog starts crying as soon as Simone started singing :p

I just got myself Sonata's live DVD, For the Sake of Revenge, a couple of days ago.
How I love this one, it comes with a CD as well which has got most of the tracks of the dvd on it. Sounds quality is great, better than at gigs cause you can actually hear the guitars, which strangely enough is a somewhat of a requirement for metal.
Vocals are very good on this one, at least as good as on the Tavastia gig. If you want a nice impression about that, do a video.google.com search. Jani tries to pull off too much during his guitarsolo's, ending up with a raped Fullmoon solo, a darn shame. On the other hand, the Victoria's Secret solo is the best I've heard so far. the great part is that it was the exact same price as the normal Rosenrot. the regular one was $12.99, and so was this one :p i don't know why anyone would get the regular one...
you'll usually see anamorphic as "enhanced for widescreen TVs", which i didn't really understand until i used a widescreen TV.
"normal" widescreen films (which are quickly becoming the exception rather than the norm) are a regular 720x480 (NTSC) picture with some sort of black bars on the top and the bottom. so when you view it on a 4x3 TV, it looks regular, it just sits there.
but when widescreen TVs came out, there was a problem. to keep the aspect ratio and have it fit the screen, you have to zoom in, which makes it pretty ugly. so they created a new format. it's still the same 720x480 picture, but instead of letterboxing it, they use those extra lines of resolution to put picture there. so the "raw" image looks really goofy, because it's stretched vertically. when you put it in a widescreen TV, it pulls the picture across, and poof, perfectly fits the widescreen and looks nice. and on a 4x3 TV, instead of pulling it left to right, it just compresses it up and down. so both sides win! better resolution on a 4x3 AND 16x9. technology rocks.

Your purchase of Mutter will rock even harder with the inclusion of an enhanced CD exclusive to Best Buy and BestBuy.com. With your purchase, you'll also get an additional CD attached to the Mutter jewel case with the bonus track "Helleluja" and the music video of "Sonne," a cool track on Mutter.
BUT they have better info in their FAQ:
What different versions are there?
There were several editions of Mutter made.
A limited edition digipack was sold in Europe and imported by some other countries. A limited edition with a second CD with "Hallelujah" and the video for "Sonne" was sold at BestBuy stores in the United States. The Japanese edition also has "Hallelujah" as a hidden song after 2 minutes of silence on the last track.
Along with these, is the standard edition with the regular 11 tracks and nothing "special".
this red cover version you speak of (http://www.discogs.com/release/409678) seems to be a tour version with live tracks.
concerning your last point, i think that song is actually pretty cool, i don't think it's meant to be serious, the lyrics seem like a joke to me (and so do all the other parts of the song). i actually think Rosenrot is by far their worst album. it just doesn't pack enough "oomph".

i love Benzin and Mann Gegen Mann...but other than that, the album is meh. i mean, i'll still listen to it all the way through, but i am really hoping they pick it up for the next album.
the Mann Gegen Mann video kicks ass though...man, all the Rammstein videos kick ass. Rammstein always has the most kickass music videos. Tool and Rammstein are definitely my favorite bands as far as music videos.

Well if you know what the lyrics mean, I never think it was meant to be taken seriously. ;) A bit like Bück Dich. :D

"Spring" is my favourite track on it. The song has an undeniable atmosphere from beginning to end. Still nothing compared to Reise Reise though. "Moskau" remains my favourite Rammstein song followed by "Ohne Dich."

Moskau and Seemann are my favourite Rammstein songs. The former is just a piledriver of a song from start to end. In 2002/3 I used to listen to the Live Aus Berlin version of Seemann before going to bed each night. It's such a great song. Alter Mann, Links 234, Zwitter, Adios, Mein Teil, Ohne Dich and Amour are my other favourites, but pretty much every Rammstein song is listenable.

dang, "listenable", that's harsh. that's how i feel about Rosenrot tracks 3 to the end...but every album before that, pretty much every song is classic (to me).
i used to think Reise Reise was horrible except for Mein Teil (which i first heard on the RE2 OST) but i put the CD in my car and the more i heard it, the more i liked it....i listened to it over again today and i really love it. Morgenstern and Stein Um Stein are classic, i really love when Till screams.

Yeah, that would be interesting :)
A couple of my friends had a small show with their band a week ago, great opportunity to get hammered and have some fun. They were the first to play, the second band made noise, plain and simple. The third band rocked, had 2 hot chicks in it dressed up in these tiny white dresses, if lighting were better I would've been able to sneak in a lot of panty shots :p
http://www.musicfrom.nl/rsimage.php/bands/fotos/9590.jpg?x=300&y=300&m=3
Damn they looked fine, and the front chick even did some grunts I think, definately a bangable band
www.scanyourmind.com : They have a song for download, in case you're interested.
Too bad the band of a those friends of mine aren't looking for a people to do grunts/screams, they mainly play covers of songs like Metallica's and Rage. I suggested to do Graveworm, music shouldn't be that difficult, vocals would be taken care of. I don't really feel like going with a band I hardly know, but maybe I'll find one later. I can't play instruments, so that's a let down as well.
Anyway Mire, I'm looking forward to hearing more from your band :)
Actually we have a song, still under construction, called "B!tch Symphony". I can record and upload it. Ah, our influences are Pantera, Angra, Dr. Sin and Helloween (yeah, a lot of different styles).
Though we had a problem last night with our bassist involved. The guitarrist came to me and said "hey rod, do want to learn bass?". I was like "OMG YES". Let's see what we will solve today.

If this is what Metal heads listen too, then it is the same as rap. Songs about slutty women, sex, drugs and alcohol, not to mention bad lyrics. What about the Music man? Nothing beats an awesome guitar solo and being able to predict the beats and melody.

Sorry, but I posted that stuff because of the video, not because it's what "metal heads" listen too [sic]. Monster Magnet is industrial metal, not heavy metal (and they're not like rap, because their songs are quite psychedelic, in fact).
If you want true Heavy Metal, look no further than Iron Maiden. You should do some reading, by the way. Try here first: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_Metal
Of course there're other kinds of metal (death, trash, speed, power...). You can look up on google for more info on these. I can't offer much info about these other genres, because I'm mainly into heavy metal stuff.
BTW, one my favorites heavy metal songs is "Paranoid", from Black Sabbath. Check it out.

Well for starters you could read the thread and click a link here and there. Industrian is hosting quite a few videos I made at concerts that will prove metal is far more than just screaming and guitars, though some bands do fit the image you have. Mostly the subgenre they call 'Nu-Metal', however Heavy- , Power-, and Symphonic metal are completely different, mostly being based on melody and having clean vocals.
If this is what Metal heads listen too, then it is the same as rap. Songs about slutty women, sex, drugs and alcohol, not to mention bad lyrics. What about the Music man? Nothing beats an awesome guitar solo and being able to predict the beats and melody.
Of course there are bands like that, it all started with Sex Drugs and Rock 'n Roll didn't it? ;)
Keep in mind there's far more though, some metalbands got lyrics on the border of poetry.
Here are some video links:
Freedom Call - Land of the Light (http://www.rpgdesign.com/cid/Freedom%20Call%20-%20Land%20of%20the%20Light.rar), very cheerful stuff, some call it cheesy, some find it the best band in the world.
Sonata Arctica - Tallulah (http://www.rpgdesign.com/cid/SonataArctica-Tallulah-11-05-2006.rar), a very nice ballad, great vocals and pretty good lyrics, like they always have.
Sonata Arctica - The Medley (http://www.rpgdesign.com/cid/SonataArctica28-04-2006.rar), consists out of several Sonata Arctica songs, if you want to see solo's, look no further, or click the next link, cause Dragonforce has songs that take 8 minutes with 4 minutes solo :p
Dragonforce - Fury of the Storm (http://www.rpgdesign.com/cid/Dragonforce%2005-03-2006Fury.rar) Amazing solo man.

I can't believe so many still think metal is just screaming and simple guitars that could pass as rap bass lines. I also can't believe how people decide what kind of music is by lyrical content. Who cares what they write about, listen to the music (no that's not called the "beat" of the song, morons). What's also great, and this will be the last one for now. The people who think this way are the first to judge something they never heard before for as being crap.

Yea, I was expecting something along the lines of A Night at the Opera as well. The Fly single threw me off, it sort of had that feel. I was wrong though, this album reminds me a lot of Imaginations from the Other Side; more metal-sounding. Of course, that isn't a bad thing at all. I like more mid range vocals when they "scream". I don't like the really low I'm satan stuff and I can only take so much of the "someone cut off me balls" cradle of filth stuff. Anywho...
To be honest "immature" doesn't work there. You see since the vocalist isn't hitting any notes (this works for rap as well) it's not musical at all. There for it can't be mature or imature. As I say, I'd rather hear a thousands screams of people dying than one person who can't sing atempt to.
Side note: Isn't it funny how people feel metal is all screaming when it started with some of the best singers around till this day? Dio, priest, hell even though you can't understand him ozzy still has an okay voice.
Cid Highwind
September 30th, 2006, 11:07
Nothing wrong with a scream or growl every now and then, but it has to be done properly and in the right song. Use it with care :p There's more than just singing and sometimes a well placed growl can really enhance a song to set the mood.
I also think that metal has got the best singers today, when you listen to the radio and you hear all these whiney voices of those popstars it just makes my neckskin crawl... Maroon 5 anyone?
The Guardian gig.... man it ROCKED :D They started the same as on the live album with Into the Storm, which kinda disappointed me because of his vocals. He sounded really tired and dropped all the high notes for a lower line. I've been spoiled by their live album, I know, so was kinda prepared to hear lesser vocals. Actually, they played all the songs from their live album, except for Majesty and a few others, they only played two songs of their new album which were okay, but not as good as others.
They also played 'And then there was Silence', man that song is freaking awesome, and long. I also managed to record 2 songs: After Nightfall and Time stands still at the Iron Hill. Quality is as usual, but unfortunately we switched ISP and I don't think I have enough webspace anymore, so I gotta check on it, and perhaps I should inform Industrian about it.
I think we went kinda nuts last night after the gig... Walking around in the parking lot screaming 'VALHALLAAAH, DELIVERANCE' and the rest of the chorus for 5 minutes straight. Then as we drove out of it hanging out of the window continuing the chorus, and then suddenly seeing someone give us the horns through their window out of their car, which was driving behind us :p Yeah we enjoyed ourselves.
On top of that, when we came back at McD we got offered all they had left because they were closing. Free burgers FTW :D I'm still feeling stuffed... 1 Chicken Mythic, a Big Mac, two Hamburgers, a couple of bitterballs (don't think you guys know those), a sundae and medium fries is quite a lot, even if you split it over a meal and midnight snack :p

Well here they played something with 'Fly' in it, and another one, that's all, perhaps you should look up a setlist to see which songs you need to practice :p
Oh and I found out Hammerfall will be here the 24th of January, let's hope there will be a less lame audience this time.

Nothing wrong with a scream or growl every now and then, but it has to be done properly and in the right song. Use it with care :p There's more than just singing and sometimes a well placed growl can really enhance a song to set the mood.
You're telling me. Opeth for the frikken massive win!
Then as we drove out of it hanging out of the window continuing the chorus, and then suddenly seeing someone give us the horns through their window out of their car, which was driving behind us :p Yeah we enjoyed ourselves. .
Oh dude, you're making me cry :( . *sigh* if only I had the moneys...

I started to listen to the new Rhapsody (of fire) cd yesterday, it seems about the same as the last, but I didn't hear a guitar solo, then again I only got to listen to the softer songs.

Yeah it was a blast without a doubt... though I still think this is one of the most static bands I've seen. The two guitarists both had one square meter of their own and while they had a large stage, they didn't move an inch. Same for the bass player who was standing next to the drummer all of the time.
Hmm, Rhapsody is another band I'd love to see.
Also, yesterday I found out Graveworm will be heading for the studios in january next year, hopefully they'll go back to their gothic/black metal roots and leave the nu-metal for what it is. Can't wait to see them touring through europe again after their previous 2 shows here got cancelled.

I also picked up the new Blind Guardian. It is really good, but it is a step down from Night at the opera. To a point that's good, but I still like to hear all the differnt things going on. Still has a really great songs.
you are so ****ing right, i should know, ive been trying to convince a freind of mine to stop listening to pop..
The blind guardian album is pretty neat. I prefer imaginations from the other side myself (add to it sadly sings destiny, curse of feanor and bright eyes and its perfect imo) but there are some good songs like this will never end and turn the page. i love it

Hey guys, it's been almost a week, but I've been busy gaming so don't blame me :p
Last Saturday I finally got the chance to see the holy worms again. Graveworm was to play in Belgium, kinda like nextdoor to an old member some of you might remember, Carnage. Unfortunately he had to cancel it last minute so we couldn't meet up for a night of beer 'n metal.
There were also a couple of other bands, of which we only saw Herfst and Double Diamond, both local bands. Herfst (= autumn/fall) was pretty damn good, very good and loud vocals/grunts, great drums and nice guitar riffs. A very enjoyable start of the night for us.
After Herfst we got Double Diamond, some kind of thirteen in a dozen heavy metal band with a funny frontman. His appearrance made us laugh especially when he drew a sword :p
Meanwhile we noticed Stefan and Harry walk up the stairs to the merchandise stands :D Managed to talk with Stefan (vocals) for some time and he had more time than ever before. We've had it twice that he ran off quickly after a gig, but now he seemed to have all the time of the world for us. Got to talk a bit about the new album, and they've got 6 songs ready, except for the lyrics. Also it is going to be more technical IIRC, and I certainly hope it will be taking a step away from the nu-metal, back to the old gothic roots.
I asked Stefan that if I'd buy a couple of albums, if he'd be willing to sign one or two of them. He offered me to take them backstage to have them signed by the whole band. So now I've got Scource of Malice, Engraved in Black and (n)Utopia all signed, this definately made my day :D
Have been spending some time with Harry as well (axe), great guy, shared a beer or two as well. Had some chats about other bands and everything. He explained to me that they didn't have much time after the gig because they had to go to italy (900km) that night, because the other night their drummer had to work again oO
After enjoying the convs and making some kickass pictures, and a couple of beers later, the show finally started. Their intro tune from nUtopia kicked in, and the dodo responsible for it forgot to turn off the cd when the band was supposed to start, kinda messy :p The first two songs had some sloppy moments as well, like mixing up tempo I think. Doesn't matter anyway because the crowd went wild, as you can see in the videos I've made.
They played the following songs:
I - The Machine, Legions Unleashed, Hateful Design, A Dreaming Beauty, Dreaming into Reality, Unhallowed by the Infernal One, and as zugabe we got ABHORRENCE \ , , /
In between they also asked us to name a song, the crowd was divided between Losing My Religion (rem cover) and Fear of the Dark. We got the latter, and I hope you guys will enjoy the video of it ;)
I can't remember last time I've had a neck this stiff, and I'm sure I've never had so much beer at a gig either. Fell asleep as soon as we stepped in the car... It's been a good night, can't wait to see the guys again.

Fear Factory is touring with Decapitated, Hypocrisy, and Suffocation. Which sucks because it's gonna be H, S, D, FF and the only person I know who wants to go plans on leaving after Suffocation because he doesn't want to see Decap or FF. They normally only have one drummer (Scott Columbus) and one guitarist (Karl Logan) but they had a MASSIVE performance at Earthshaker that featured all of their previous members (Ross the Boss and David Shankle on guitars and Donnie Hamzik and Rhino on drums). That song, Battle Hymn, was the final song on the set, and it was easily the best way to end any show.

Two drummers is insane, three...wow! I've seen Claypool play with two drummers, I honestly don't think it's that great. Too much percussion noise for me, perhaps.
I could tell they were having some sort of big party, I doubt they do every song like that! (if any band does that, that's amazing)

They mainly played with just the normal lineup, but they had a "Battle Hymns Era (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_Hymns_%28Manowar_album%29)" where the original lineup played a few songs. Then they had a "Triumph of Steel Era (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Triumph_of_Steel)" where they played a few songs with Shankle and Rhino replacing Logan and Columbus.

Iron Maiden star captains Rangers
Heavy metal legend Bruce D!ckinson was at the controls as Rangers football club flew to Israel for a Uefa Cup tie.
The Iron Maiden frontman piloted a 757 jet from Glasgow ahead of Wednesday's match against Hapoel Tel Aviv.
D!ckinson is qualified as a commercial pilot and regularly flies for UK-based charter firm Astraeus.
He specifically asked to fly the Ibrox men to the Israeli city when he learned that the charter firm had landed the contract.
Rangers manager Walter Smith told the club's website: "I know their stuff quite well.
"I remember going to meet the band when they played in Edinburgh a few years ago.
"I would never have thought that Bruce would be flying our plane."
Iron Maiden with D!ckinson at the helm are still going strong after two decades of hard rock and an estimated 80 million album sales.
Their hits include Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter, Run to the Hills, The Number of the Beast and The Trooper.
The band played the Glasgow SECC in December last year as part of a successful world tour.
Astraeus, based in Crawley, West Sussex, confirmed that D!ckinson was at the controls of Rangers' jet.
Glasgow Rangers were flying in style. And Bruce D!ckinson has too much spare time (considering that he's a singer, pilot, fencer...).
:D

I hate bands with two drummers, bass players, or vocalist (on less one is behind an instrument). It just bothers me.
WHAT? So you're not a huge Slipknot fan??

I'm sure I wouldn't believe what I'd be hearing if I'd head "Welcome aboard, this is your Captain Bruce D!ckinson speaking" followed by one of his sinister laughs :p

Well, they have the drummer and TWO percussionists, so I figured that counted as two drummers total :p But we were talking about extraneous instrumentation, they certainly have it. Two backup vocals, two guitars, two percussionists (who just bang on crap), a keyboardist, and turntables, in addition to a singer and a bassist. Yikes.

If there's one thing I respect Slipknot for it's their drummer. Seen a video of it and I was pretty impressed by it.

Joey Jordison is indeed one of my favorite drummers.
I do beleive the other two percussionists arent really necessary.
Their presence are noticeable in only a few of their songs.

Yeah, he's a good drummer. The band's direction went downhill after they hooked up with Corey Taylor. Check out the album Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat (you're gonna have to warez it because it's wayyyyyyyy out of print, there were only 1000 copies released), they had a different singer, some different members (I think they didn't even have Joey yet), and that album kicks ass. It's funky, heavy, and weird. A lot of the songs were remade later and put on their other albums, but they sound like just a big mush of sound, and Taylor's singing sucks.
By the way, Dying Fetus is coming out with a new album, and it leaked...I have it, I've yet to listen to it though. It feels weird to me to come with what I consider a "real" death metal band, it seems everyone here likes symphonic or european type metal :p

In all honesty I like Corey Taylors voice in most of the songs from the Slipknot album and Vol3 (even though the songs arent like they used to)
Ohh and hush, if you see Manditory's new album Lend Me Your Ears, give me a shout.

I hate Corey Taylor's voice. He is whiny and terrible. I used to like him when I was in 7th grade but I found so many better real metal singers, and many better singing singers, so I lost interest.

I admit I never really listened to slipknot but every time I did, I hated it with passion. I do admit the drummer is very good.
The only thing good I heard about them is they donated money to chuck schuldiner when he needed money for his surgery.
I must say that if you buy a magazine, to go buy the guitar world of april 2007. A honor to those that passed that helped develop metal and change the world FOREVER!

Shipping to the UK adds up. :p I get the Blu-ray from DVDBoxOffice.com exactly $1.18 cheaper. ;) Scottish frugality FTW!!
It's a very good deal you're getting there though. :)

Check out "The Downward Spiral." It's easily one of the best albums ever made.

I remember talking about NIN, I told you to get With Teeth because it was the poppiest album :p My favorite is The Fragile, BUT I have to say that with the music you like, you probably won't ever get into NIN.

Weird. None of my videos have ever been removed from youtube, but my Tool/Nightmare Before Christmas video was removed from Google Video.
I'd say just upload it again. With the mountains of bootleg live footage/music videos/music used in homemade things/etc, I'd say that you're just one of the unlucky ones that got discovered.

That's not weird at all. I'm sure that someone either randomly reported it, or some staff member randomly stumbled upon it. Have you seen the amazing amount of copyrighted material on Youtube? Youtube USED to screen the videos, but they are getting thousands of uploads per day, they just don't have time. Reupload it and no one will be the wiser.

Let me rephrase it then: If I would find a video that should be reported for this reason, I would check the other videos of the same user to see if he has more of them, because there is a big chance he has.

Today, my girlfriend bought me the Kamelot DVD and it is amazing. Awesome interview, I recommend this DVD to any metal fan, or even for someone that isn't into metal to much. Very well done.
I also bought Dream Evil's first cd dragon slayer. I had it downloaded before, and lent it to a friend and never got it back. Good thing I'm slowly buying my cds (man I have a lot of work...literally they don't buy themselves) and I thought I'd get it since it's a wonderful cd.
Head banging night for me.

Congrats on the Kamelot DVD, a lot of people, mainly chicks, tell me it's a great band. I remember the Sonata chick being a huge fan of theirs. I only know the song Soul Society because it gets played a lot on Aardschok FM. I like their sound, it's sounds pretty accessible.
