Hi, ive read on how to rip GD-ROM Discs on sites and that, but i only want to know something....
By ripping a DC game, will u get all the info that is on the GD-ROM disc itself? or will u get something else?
Another thing, i kow u can rip by BBA and 56K Modem...and Serial Cable, but...is the Serial Cable abit faster than by doing using the 56K Modem?
I would really appreaciate it if someone can tell me.

You would just get everything on the GD-ROM, whether its a game or something else; the whole disc.
I'm not sure since I haven't done the process myself, but I recall someone saying 56k is very slow for this.

Why won't you try to upload 1 GB through a 56k modem just to find out :p

unless you leave your pc on overnight the 56k and serial methods will not be for you.
The serial cable having done it myself takes roughly 24 hours in total to rip, i imagine 56k will take roughly 48 hours due to serial cable running at 11.5k/sec and 56k running at roughly 5.6k/sec.
if you intend on doing it and want to do it at speed, the broadband adaptor is the way to go.

Only takes a bit over 2 days  But will it be the same speed to transfer from dc?

but finding a Broadband Adapter is very hard. and i am afraid to melt my DC. isnt there another way using the same method but faster?
And, since a GD-ROM is 1.4gb or something like that, wat do u do to make it fit on a standard density disc?

Well there's also the 33k modems
And from what I've heard at the forums dedicated to the homebrew PSO server the DC 56k modem uploads at a constant 33kbit max when they are using the PC<->DC connection.

come on, keep this on topic...even if its your thread.
use the Private Message feature on the forums for these kinds of messages

actually, i dont even recommend using the PM feature for that. no one wants to be bothered with "omg how is teh PCSX2 doing?!?!", i mean, look at the rules of PCSX2 section:
We DO NOT KNOW when the next version will be released. Do not waste our time by asking.
i think saying "how is the project going?" falls under that category of no-nos ;)
anyway, KEEP IT ON TOPIC damn man even though it's your topic you still gotta follow the rules (like chrono already pointed out)

I thought the GD rom was 1gb? And when people do dreamcast rips they have to cut a lot of stuff out for it to fit on a CD. They compress videos and even audio files. It can really get ugly for some games. Another thing about getting the broadband adapter the cheapest I've ever seen one was like 140 bucks.

Yeah the BBA is a pretty rare device, if you ever get one for less than 100 bucks consider yourself lucky ;)

September 24th, 2005, 17:40
yeah, that's the reason i dont emulate dreamcast, i'd love to, but i sure as hell aint using my 56k modem to transfer files and a BBA isnt worth it

sorry about that folks. didnt mean to upset u lot. Anyways, by people cutting bits out to make it fit on a ordinary CD, isnt possible to burn it on a Mini-DVD, as the capacity is 1.4GB i think, without cutting anything out at all?. Is that possible?
Aided Onslaught
September 29th, 2005, 16:58
You can burn it on it, but your Dreamcast will not be able to read it.
Oalboukharey

Including by making the disc selfbootable. and...wen burning it, isnt it possible to make the PC think ur burning it on a ordinary CD? and to do overburn on it, wen actually it isnt doing no overburn on the disc. Possible?

I remember and found this Snayo drive that burns High-Density discs, and can maybe red them too. Since a GD-ROM is a High-Density disc, maybe this drive can read it.

Go to this site of research on it.
Can anyone answer me about this?

merged with your other thread. GD-Rom related....

There's only one way to find out. If it will be possible it'll be very nice. But I doubt it's the same technology. The site you linked said the HD discs are readable by a normal DVD drive. GD-Roms however, are not. So they're not exactly the same.

But that is essential to the game!!!! that is ridiculous, even though they do it, isnt possible to burn the discs with the Sanyo High-Density burner as i linked earlier?

may i ask if anyone has heard of the Naomi Board complete with a GD-ROM drive?
would anyone happent o know if that can read Dreamcast games? and i think it has serial ports to be connected to a PC and through that ithe DC games can be copied from that way?
Anyone?

It wont work just because both are "high density discs". DVD and CD are both "optical discs" yet you can't read DVDs with a cd reader, can you?

I looked on eBay and there's a few BBA's going for under $50, although they have 1-3 days left on the auction. I've looked at them occasionally for a year or two and they typically seem to be in the $30-60 range, although that's still a fair amount of money.

I doubt the Naomi would run Dreamcast games, probably due to the slight hardware differences. Besides, if it did have serial ports and did read DC games, you would be doing the exact same thing as using a Coder's Cable, just for a hell of a lot more money :p. I believe GD-ROM discs are just CDs with the error checking code removed, which is why they they hold 1.2 GB and are also sensitive to scratches.

Usually a BBA goes for at least $100,- so consider yourself very lucky if you will be able to get it for even 70 dollars :)

From www.dreamcast-scene.com
--------------------
As you can see below, the only striking differences between the naomi and the dreamcast is the amount of Ram. This makes it entirely possible for a great, if not perfect port to the console. Sound memory isn't even an issue since the DC can spool redbook audio off of a GDrom disc, and the Naomi can't.
Dreamcast Specs:
CPU: SH-4 64-bit RISC CPU (200 MHz 360 MIPS / 1.4 GFLOPS)
Graphic Engine: PowerVR (PVR2DC)
Sound Processor: Yamaha Super Intelligent Sound Processor
Main Memory: 16MByte (64Mbit SD-RAM x 2)
Graphic Memory: 8 MByte
Sound Memory: 2Mbyte
Naomi Specs:
CPU: SH-4 64-bit RISC CPU (200 MHz 360 MIPS / 1.4 GFLOPS)
Graphic Engine: PowerVR (PVR2DC)
Sound Processor: Yamaha Super Intelligent Sound Processor
Main Memory: 32 MByte
Graphic Memory: 16 MByte
Sound Memory: 8 MByte
Hopefully this will make a few thing a bit more clear :)

The audio streaming would be one problem, possibly BIOS differences as well. That would be pretty neat to play console games on an arcade machine though :p.

True, I think it's a case comparible to the Xbox - PC thing. Both are made with the same hardware (Naomi and DC being even more similar), but technically they're both a different platform.
So to answer Oalboukharey's question: No both aren't compatible, just similiar in terms of hardware. Naomi boards don't have GD-rom support.
