Creating Game Saves For PCSX2 (8th Revision)

Credits go to "BCM124" 1st revision, GiGaHeRz for letting me use the ISO file, "cyclonmaster" (for helping others), "Gilgamesh" (for helping others), and “Schattenberg88” creation of this guide (8th Revision)

This guide was updated on January 20, 2010 for PCSX2 v0.9.6r1888

Notes:
A) You must have a PCSX2 formatted memory card. You can do this from the Browser screen in the BIOS, or you could refer to CKemu's BIOS Guide (http://forums.ngemu.com/pcsx2-forum/65015-ckemus-guide-ps2-bios.html) (guide linked here)
Boot.ELF and PS2 Save Builder are located in the memcardsave.7z file.
B) You can also get this to work with Memory Card Dumps from a PS2)
C) Most corrupt files are either due to the site hosting a bad file, closing the emulator before it could finish copying the save(s) over, a bug causing the emulator to hang, or a bug in the emulator itself.
D) Free Program I use to create my ISO's: InfraRecorder (Attached)
E) Please download PCSX2 v0.9.6r1888 and December 30, 2009 Beta Plugins.

1. Please read all above information before starting and try the guide before requesting saves.
2. Format your Memory Card in PCSX2. If you need help, follow CKemu's BIOS Guide, or download the formatted blank memory cards (formattedmemcards.7z) from the attached files below (Formatted Memory Cards attached are from the NTSC 3000 series).
3. Find the game you want from gamefaq.com, codebreaker.com, gameshark.com, and download the save file. In this tutorial I am using a Kingdom Hearts Save.
4. Open PS2 Save Builder.
5. Click Open, and then locate your save file that you just downloaded.
6. Remember the “root/ID” Number.
7. Create a folder containing that number.
8. Back in the PS2 Save Builder, Highlight all the “File Names,” right click and tell it “Extract."
9. Find the folder you just created, and tell it save. You should now have the save files in the folder.
10. If you want to do more saves, then now is the time. Repeat above steps.
11. Close PS2 Save builder.
12. Open any CD Burner Program, Put the folder on the CD and create an ISO containing that folder. (Note: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BURN A DISC, also you can add more than one folder to the ISO. I recommend "InfraRecorder")
13. Put the ISO in the same folder as Boot.elf.
14. Open PCSX2 (Vista users: right click and click the option "Run as Administrator").
15. Go to Configure --> CPU.
16. Tick EERec, VU0rec, and VU1rec.
17. Go to Configure --> Advance.
18. Click on Defaults, and then OK.
19. Go to File --> Open ELF File --> ISO Image... (Alternatively, with 0.9.6, set the cdvd plugin to read the created iso, and run the elf file from the PCSX2 file menu).
20. Locate Boot.elf.
21. Locate the ISO file that was created.
22. Press "Circle."
23. Go to “CDFS” and tell it “OK.”
24. Locate the file you created titled ex: “BASLUS-20370-02” (Could be different).
25. Press up or down to highlight the selection.
26. If you have more save files, Press “X” to “Mark” the file and repeat.
27. Once done press “R1,” Select “Copy,” and tell it “OK.”
28. Go up one level, by pressing “Triangle.”
29. Select “mc0:/” or “mc1:/”and tell it “OK.”
30. Press “R1” and tell it “Paste.”
31. When copying is finished, the folder(s) should be present on the screen.
32. Press "Triangle" to go up one level and exit the emulator.

Congratulation, you should now have the save file(s) on your PCSX2 memory card!

If someone (like me) were completely psycho, it might be easier to hit X on each folder (in the example it was “BASLUS-20370-02”) to mark it and copy all the saves at once.

Thats how it should look, the marked files/folders have a * beside them, the unmarked files/folders don't.

I just don't feel like copying 37 saves individually :P

Can someone help me find a free CD Burning Program that can create ISOs out of scratch? I have one that's called Sonic Record Now, but it's only capable of making ISO copies of CDs/DVDs that existed.

Look for apollo, which is an application for ps2 ripping, it has an iso creator in it.

edit: sigh, despite working I still can't get in-game with FFX. I can get to the part where you actually load the save off the memory card, but when it's suppose to start rendering 3D, it fades of to black and nothing happens...oh well. I'll wait until there's more progress on the Emulator, great work nonetheless.

You might need to format your memory card from the BIOS interface, not the Memory Card Manager, or the card can be full. You might want to edit your post with more information. then what you have right now.

i got the same error as shapyi, but then i run the bios, and the memcard showed the icon of the castlevania save.
but it didnt load the game when i asked to.
could it be a PAL/NTSC thing?

Yes, it would be a region problem. Check the gamefaqs.com site and look for the correct region (ex: US, JP, ...). If that save doesn't work delete it and try another save. Hope this helps!

Don't double post, instead next time, exdit the previous post. The R1 button in your config is H, you may have to hold it down for a few seconds to get anything.

Make sure your memory card is formatted. To do this,

Load the CDVDNull plugin.
Hit File->Run CD (It will load you to the bios)
Hit X (or Circle depends on your bios) to go into browser
and then hit X (again, or circle) to select the memory card.

If it says the device is not formatted, hit yes to format, then try copying over again.

First do not double post,edit your first post instead
Second the game doesnt recognize your saves because they are probably saves from another region of the game,eg youre using the (U) version saves instead of the (E) ones

Some games dont go ingame because of a movie sequence. for example...Kingdom hearts...with 0.8.1 after you start a new game it freezes at the fmv, but if you load the game from the memory card, you can actually go ingame and play it with some graphical errors. It all depends on the game you are playing.

I dont see that the pcsx2 team needs to make a list with mcard saves. the people of the forum can do that by creating a new thread.

Put in on the memory card and try it out with that game. If your game doesn't detect the save file, then its not a saved game from that region the game was made for.

1. PS2SaveBuilder is not working for me, I even downloaded it off the offical website and it doesn't work. Which version of the .NET framework do I need or do I need something else to make it work? I have .NET framework version 1.1.

I'd have to look into the option of possibly getting it in the stickies without cluttering it up more than it already is. I'll talk to a couple other mods and see what makes sense. may i put forward the suggestion of a sticky thread linking to the useful threads that are currently sticky'd? seems to work well on another forum i go on, plus then the thread can die down and still be found. put that to the other mods too :)

PlayStation One games can be found here (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/index.html).

Just to let you know, this guide only supports PlayStation 2 saves. So if importing PlayStation One games saves work, then GREAT! If not...then the game saves might work later. Right now PCSX2 only supports PlayStation 2 discs.

Because you probably don't have the image with the saves mounted on it. Or you're using Null, when you should be using LinuzISO.;)

mount the image with a virtual drive like alcohol then use peops plugin when using peops configure it to your virtual drive letter restart the emulator so it recognizes the change and that should work:guitar:

Got a site that has some saves? If you've got a link, it would help.:p As far as I know, there isn't a PAL version of Final Fantasy X International. Are you sure it's PAL? The only one I know of is the Japanese NTSC version.

smackdown vs raw doesnt work on the current release anyway so its a waste of time im afraid, unless you are putting it on your real ps2

I saw in previous posts that they could not select cdfs when it got down to that step. I followed the directions using PEOPS for mounting on a drive, and LinuzISO as well as the CDVDbin to point to the direct .iso on my computer that the guide originally told me to use, and I can still not get past the cdfs section of the patch making. I held the buttons down too, so its not an issue, and yes, I am pressing the right assigned key :) Any ideas?

Here's what my console reads, I just noticed it says it can't' recognize my HDD...

Twave if you had the time could you compile these? I doubt it would work, but I haven't read if it has been tried to load save games for Shadow of the Colossus, as I posted earlier I can't get it to work, it won't recognize my cdfs. Do you mind giving these a shot?

In the file there were 2 max saves with the same number. I only copied the first one (_b.max).

AFAIK, with Isobuster the default is *.bin or *.tao but you can rename it to *.iso while creating an iso file. Also there is DVD decrypter.

I tried renaming it to .iso and I mounted it, but it still didn't recognize anything from cdfs. I am a complete idiot and thought Shadow of Colossus would work, but you can't get to the main screen to load off of your ps2 memcard!! Although, I would love to get this working on my own and see if any of the Katamari Damacy's work once you load it, rather than the typical crash after tutorial mode.

sixstringedmatt: If you haven't tried MagicISO Maker I would recomend using it instead of renaming a *.bin to *.iso. sometimes that can make a difference.

Not that I am aware of. I would say no, but I could be wrong. Just mess with the settings and find out.

If you mean to take game saves out of the emulator's memcard, then I'm pretty sure there isn't a way to do that, since in order to take them out of a real PS2, you have to connect it to your PC with either USB to USB or through the network, and since PCSX2 doesn't support dev9 yet (network, USB and other similar hardware), I'm pretty sure it's not possible at this point, unless you can figure out how to extract saves from the .ps2 memcard files.;)

I got loading saves fine in 0.9
Here are the steps.
1.Follow the instructtions stated before to make your iso it should look like this. (pic 1)
2. Set pcsx2 to the following settings. (Pic 2 - 3)
Follow the rest of the instrutuins as stated before it will work perfectly. (pic 4)

Thanks alot friend! I appreciate your time! I still don't know what went wrong. My only idea is that I couldn't burn the folder to an .iso, I had to make a .bin or .mdf and mounted that... any suggestions while I have you here. Alcohol 120% wouldn't let me make an iso, the only other program I have is IsoBuster, and it only makes .bin
You can use magiciso to create iso image (http://www.magiciso.com/) form the folders. and it also supports burn .mdf image onto cd.

by doing this u can start a game on your ps2 (for eg FFX) and play to a point where the game becomes "playable". and then u transfer the saves 2 ur com n u can continue the game on pcsx2.

just a question tho... does anyone know how 2 reverse this process?
to convert save.ps2 files into the extracted form(in the BASLUS6513212432 etc folder)

Here's my problem. I'm using Pcsx2 0.9. I know I should switch it but because of the large breakthroughs they've made with 0.9, anyway here are the problems

1)cdvdbin is not recognized as a plugin.
Plugin CDVDbin.dll: Version3!=5

2) Boot.elf opens but continously loops on an unofficial version because the first faq was kind enough to point me in the direction of the that particular progam

3) When using the official program. It freeze, but gives me some interesting output text which makes it seem as if the program is running properly.
All other settings are inputed correctly from the faq.

I think I'm missing some of the rom files, but if they were so important why have I been able to run the pcsx2 with no problems, so far.
This is the first elf I've tried to run, so maybe all elfs requires those files to run, because they act outside of the bios as a bios for elf games when

When you're in Nero, and it asks what you want the file name for the image to be, under it, you will see image type. Change that to ISO.;)

well, i understood all the tutorial and i've used it more then once... now i've played with emu my game using my save games, but now i wont to do the opposit operation: i wont take my new save games from *.ps2 file to my memory card. i try to do the tutorial in the other way, but obiviusly eLoader con paste file on a "cd" (it is a file iso), then i've try to take another way. In accord to the tutorial, eLoader just copy file from *.iso to virtual memory card, the i thought that the format of file was similar; open tha iso file and ps2 file with notepad effectively the file were very similar, than i try to copy manualy file copying the text, but i'm not too much lucky, and it doesen't work (there is a difference of 10 lines from iso version and ps2 version of text). there are someone that know to do that? please help

To be honest, what you want to do is very tricky, and I don't even think it's possible. The way I get my saves off my real PS2 is through FTP on my netowork (other people use USB pen drives). Both of those methods require Dev9 hardware (network adapter or USB port on PS2) which PCSX2 doesn't support at the moment. Unless you can figure out a way to disassemble a .ps2 file, I think you're out of luck.;)

If you have got problems transfering game saves with PCSX2 0.9.1 try the older versions like 0.9 or 0.8. They would work, if you follow the steps correctly ;)

I noticed that one was the PAL European version (SLES 524580). Provided that you have that region of the game, it should work.;)

That's why that save doesn't work then.;) I didn't think you had the same game in 2 different regions:p Maybe I should have pointed out that the one save was from a different region (since I noticed while I was making the card that the main save file was SLES_XXXXX, which is a dead giveaway that it's PAL). If you can find that save for the US version, post it and I'll add it to your card.;)
A note: Typically SLUS and SCUS are US, SLES and SCES are PAL, and SLPM and PBPX are Japan. The acronym means Sony Computer (Insert region U=US, E=Europe,) System. If it's SLxS, that's Sony Licenced for (Region) System, meaning Sony didn't make the game, but it's officially licenced by Sony for play on a PS2.;)

Hi, just saw that patch, to use US saves for every other FFX version :-)
Unluckily, my PS2 broke and it will take some time till its repaired...
and i cant find a save for FFX after the first cutscene, since that patch to skip the movies doesnt really work, it doesnt freeze, but is at around 6fps and ofter quite some time, i see the first frame of the first movie i think, and that for a LONG time :-(

I have figure out why do we get corrupted save game in BIOS. After we save the gamefaqs game to pcsx2. It the game saved are rewritten by the pcx2. So, You have to uncheck writable in properties of the save game files in PS2 save builder. Try this and you will get the saved game on your pcsx2 or bios.:guitar: :thumb:

Found it, it was because in the tutorial it said copy the files if there are more, instead of folders, I was doing it wrong and copying the content within the folders instead of copying the whole folder. Thanks now I can skip through those crashy parts.

I have now unlocked everything in WWE Smackdown! vs RAW 2006 :) Normally I am not a person that takes cheats or even save games from a site to unlock stuff or get past something hard, but there was no way I could unlock things in SvsR 2006 since Season Mode doesn't work yet, Exhibition does though and I play a couple of matches daily now (640x480@60 Fullscreen) and now I can finally play with one of my favs Bret Hart and more! :)

OK, I thought I had these saved on a memory card already, but apparently not anymore.:p Sooo, I took it as an excuse to spend the day finishing both games in my real PS2 and then transferring the save. Keep in mind, I sorta rushed through them, since my goal was basically just to make all levels open. Tested with each game, both are able to load them, but alas, IPU intros still kill them. Time for me to try some ninja patching skills now.:p Anyways, here's the card, and some screens of each game recognizing and loading the saves.:D

Anyways, did that, and put the save into your card, but apparently there was already a save from that game in there. It overwrote the one you had in there, so not sure if that's what you were looking for or not, but here's the card.

Save imported. As for your question, did you check the Compatibility Page (http://www.pcsx2.net/compat.php)? If you had, you'd see that it wasn't tested (which means none of us testers have that game) so it's status is unknown. If you want to know how well it does, simply test it.;)

Hey, I have been working on trying to get this memory card to work, having a problem finding the system file in the ISO that I made, not sure why.. I have files in the correct directory as near as I can tell.. I was hoping someone would help me put together this memory card that is right after the freeze in the jungle world for KH1

The release can run boot.elf in VURec, and rather quickly, so I recommend using that.;)
Note: your sig is a bit big, take the spaces out between the lines, as right now, it takes up half my screen.;)

Yes, it is still running but in slower motion. If you enable Console Output under the Misc. Option in the Emulator, you can see whats going on behind what is displayed on the screen (Can be helpful at times.)

i tried to use pcsx2 0.8 and followed the instruction, it success,but in the game(MONSTER HUNTER 2 JAP) ,it still says that there is no save file in the memory card,i've checked that there is a save in the memory by running the bios,...
is it the compatibility problem??

ı passed that stage with pcsx2.now ı'm at kilika town. ıf ıs there any way to take a save file from pcsx2's memcard ı can send this one.another thing is you can save anywhere with pcsx2' save command. for this you must press f1 key

Hi. I have a problem with this instruction. When I load ELF file it shows nothing and console is screaming endlessy "SYSTEM.CNF not found". Also there is no "Interpreter" option for CPU in pcsx2 0.9.1. I tried all off and all on in processor setup(except MTGS, DC and Frame limit - both times off). What to do?

I've put my SAVE.ISO made by Nero into the same folder in which BOOT.ELF is, then run pcsx2, set plugins as written, selected SAVE.ISO in Linuzappz ISO CDVD driver 0.5.0, then used File->Open ELF file. A screen appears with about 10fps, console gives a lot of info and finally starts to infinitely write about this SYSTEM file "not found". Maybe I'll try 0.8.1 but I think I'll get on without this, I've found pcsx2 memcard with saves which are working in game.

I tried to follow the instructions, but my PCSX2 crashes at about frame 30 after loading boot.elf.

SuperNOVA is unplayable without a working save file, because PCSX2 hangs on the memory card format screen on boot.

OK I give up I have tried and tried again. Everytime I try to make it myself I get towards the very end then when I click on mc0 everything feezes and I try to do mc1 and it always paste failed. using 0.9.1. memory cards are formatted. I dont know what else to try. I even tried downloading verison 0.8.1 and the same thing happens paste failed.

launchelf works fine on 0.9.1 for me :)

I use 0.8.1 because, GSsoft works with that release, and I'm not able to display any output with 0.9.1 running launchelf.
