My current desktop I can't post, it's practically impossible ;p as it changes constantly, I coded (in HTML) an active desktop, that plays from a WMP playlist, all you have to do is put the *.asx playlist (of videos ;p ) into the playlists folder, call it desktop.asx and then set the HTML as your desktop, and voilia, a video based desktop, of all your favourite anime / porn / music etc.

Well, here's the background from my P/200MMX machine. I made it myself using POVRay ages ago. It was fun to make, but slow to render. No surprise, really, given all that transparency and reflection. Not to forget the Photon Mapping for the bright spots. It's easily one of my favourite images.

I have DSL and it's extended about that far. It doesn't make any difference what so ever. :)

i have a 100 foot phone cord going across 2 rooms and my DSL is still fast, it's rated 1500/128 and i get about 1330/130 out of it.

well, you do know that DSL signal deteriorates? that's why there's short range limits on DSL. however...the limit is like 18,000 feet, i dont see why a 100 foot cord is that bad :)

Of course I know that, my buddy from my tfc days was a suffered from it :p

Edit: Actually, come to think of it my aunt had a problem when she had a phone line run from her wall upstairs, patched together with an old phone line and a new phone line she bought the day I setup her computer. It turned out her house was so old, they had to re-wire it all for dsl. After that she was still having slow speeds and it was the old piece of wire mixed with the new wire that was slowing her down.

Hushy/Reich: Yeah, I'm guessing the phone line extension should be about 50+ feet. However, my house was built in the 1970's so I'm a bit worried of what kind of performance I'll get. The only other person in the neighborhood who I know has DSL says his is fine. Although, his house may have been built 10-15 years after mine, since out neighborhood has expanded 2 times since it was originally built according to what I've seen(in fact, there are new houses that were just built this past winter, but they're horrible quality and I feel bad for those people who move into those overpriced crapholes:D).

But here's another thing, the 50+ phone line has been trampled and runs underneath the rug and has been there since summer of 2000. They're 2 20+ foot grey lines connected with a coupler. I never got speeds upwards of 28.8K via dial up modem back when I used it.

BTW, Microsoft Royale is sweet.:) Sure beats the hell out of the default theme.:)

but you know what? to tell you truth it's not a big deal. you are still going to be getting good speeds anyway, it's not like your 1.5mbit DSL will go to like 300 kbps :p

I prefer using the UXTheme.dll patch rather then the bulky StyleXP. Check www.neowin.net/forum for that :)

Thanks guys. :) Yeah, Soul Calibur in Chankast is very good for making desktops.. just use FSAA and Aniso at whatever res you want, turn on the exhibition theater for your favorite character, snap a few pics and you're golden. :D

well, the images have to be under 1600x1200. so if you have some uber sized desktop you'll have to resize it :p

by the way, I ave a question... I downloaded the tools appointed in neowin to customize the look of windows..... is there any way to save the odified files in a theme file?.... or do i have to edit everything each time I want to change?

plus, what program so you use to skin windows (I mean, what so you use to put everything you have made on the desktop?)

MSstyles for visual style (there is windowblinds but it sucks IMO), you just use the uxtheme.dll patch from neowin. Icons, Iconpackager by stardock (not free), and Replacer for the system files in case you wanna change stuff like the explorer\IE bar icons .

well, what I mean is... I have replacer.... but I don't fully understand the purpose of uxtheme.dll..... plus, isn't there any way to pack all the modifications in a ingle file (for example, an executable file), so when I want to change the style I just double click iot and voila?

The themeing service already exists in windows XP. Problem is, its designed to allow only MS Digitally signed themes (read: luna, royale, thats it). The UXtheme.dll which is responsible for that, is patched to allow non MS themes to work. To apply a visual style, you just double click its msstyle and thats it.

Well, I have a problem right now with the logon screen.... I have a fe4w questions....

- can i add transparency?
- can I use pictures as a background?
- can you tell me which areas are controlled by which tags in the logon screen? (remember, using a resource hacker)
- I have a slight problem... look at what I did while tweaking the logonui.exe file using a resource hacker... notice how the arrow button is messed up.... how do I solve that?

(no matter what I do I cannot fix that button)

Tak, making a full logonui isnt the easiest thing to do, its like making a visual style really. its all about editing BMP's. try taking an original logonui and see which BMP does what, then edit it the way you want.

Azumanga Daioh is a real anime and manga. There is no Azumanga Fantasy X-2 that I'm aware of, but it wouldn't surprise me if some enterprising mangaka had created a doujin of it.
