Sorry for the useless post, i usually dont do this but im so damn excited xD after 3 months with my TNT 2 i finally got my new gfx card xD i followed the advices of most ppl here and got an ASUS GF 6800 GT. Very nice looking card too. Im about to mount it on my PC. Just clearing some stuff up. Btw this thing has 2 power suply entraces. Anyone knows if thats really for 2 incoming cables or like 1 incoming and another out to use in other stuff? Just wanna make sure. The manual doesnt say anything about it :S
Btw here's the card xD

Don't you mean an Asus GF 6800 GT? ;) The 2 molex's are for 2 incoming power cables. Seperate one 12v line and use it only to connect to those 2 molex's. That thing must be a good overclocker to have 2 molex's. Most 6800gt's have 1 molex.

Oops yes your right i meant 6800 GT :p
Anyway i feel so bad. ONCE AGAIN i'm having problems. I can't believe this. I can't ever have my PC well dammit. First it was my cpu that was bottlenecking my 9800xt. Then i got a p4 3.0 HT and my 9800xt fan stoped working. After 3 months of sending my 9800xt to be fixed i got a lausy refund and now that i bought this new card im getting problems again. I getting tons of graphical errors. Wierdes thing only windows has them. Games dont have them at all but they're running VERY slow. NFSU2 was running like at 30fps. I already tried formating my computer, after the format i installed new drivers and windows seemed ok but all games were having slowdowns. I tried 4 diferent games and all have similiar slowdowns, like they run awsome for 5 seconds, then i get 1 second slow down over and over. according to n1ghtw0lf it might be my PSU that only has 300W. but if that was it shouldn't the games show up all messed as well? Damn i dunno what to do. I dont have another computer to test my gfx card and i can't find out what is wrong.... ARGh ii feel soo damn desperate :(
The pic shows +/- how my windows is. Its not THAT messed up. When i pasted in to paint it got alot worst so its not that bad but i still have some of those errors in icons. One more wierd thing, if i connect to another computer trough remote control all the icons in the remote window show up right.
If anyone can help me to figure out what my problem is i would really apreciate it. Here's my current comp specs:
CPU: P4 Prescot 3.0 HT 1mb cache fsb 800
Memory: 1.5GB DDR333
MB: ASRock P4V88

Woo, we have the same mobo. :D
Anyway, I'd be willing to bet your PSU isn't up to snuff.. those 6800s suck alot of juice.

Maybe you should post the brand of your PSU along with the amp stuff.

It definately looks like a power issue. The P4 isn't helping much either. What's the PSU you got? Voltages?

He has a 300watt PSU which is well under the reccomended PSU for a 6800GT.

Im getting a new one today. Is a 450W ok for it?
And these slow downs are really becouse off a weak PSU? i allways thought that it would work at all with weak power instead of slowdowns.
And whats wrong with my CPU? oO i thought a P4 3.0 HT was pretty good :S
Thanks for the info gays.

i think he means that the P4 is not helping with the power-consumption situation, since it also requires heavy power. A combination of a Pentium 4 Prescott at 3 ghz and a 6800GT that uses 2 molex connectors, 2 7200rpm Hds, not to mention the other stuff in your computer, certainly does not sound like a happy place to live for a 300W PSU.
btw...i am not gay.

No low power can cause many numerous problems on machines. From slow downs. To hangs to reboots.

Guess that wasnt it :(
Just great... Just got the new PSU. 450 W, i only have the card and my HD enabled and i still have curruption in windows if i install the drivers that came with the card and the games are STILL slow as hell. Damn... im so close to kill me self :( Are these values ok?

first, that pic isnt working.
did u install the VIA motherboard drivers before instlaling the card (this is all after your format).

Are you using the drivers that have come with the gfx card?
If yes try installing others than from Asus!
I had similar problems with an Asus V9950 Ultra!
The Asus Drivers only gave nothing than grafic errors from them try the official Nvidia drivers maybe this helps!

Sorry the picture is fixed now.
Yes i did install the VIA motherboard drivers. And i tried both the drivers that came with the card and the most recent ones from nvidia. Same thing. I can only fix the graphic errors in windows by doing this http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=48564
but the games are still very slow. CS:S running at 20/30 fps :(

Do you have access to any other motherboards/systems ?

I have an old asus P4S533-E but the cpu in it is very old. 1.7 williamate. Ill probably get low fps there becouse of the cpu and wont really know if the problem is the card or the cpu, oh and it only supports agp 4x. Im asking a few friends to see if they can test my card but they're not beeing very friendly :S,

Well dont forget the final possibility. That the card itself could be defective. But your performance issue leads me to believe its more of a chipset issue now. It's really hard to do troubleshooting when you cant use different hardware.
When I first got my SLI setup. I had tons and tons of problems with it. Instant lockups. Random hard locks in windows. And then I replaced the gigabyte board with the asus board and problems went away. That would be my next step..

Time to donate a kidney. These asus boards are very expensive :S And most likely i wont get a refund for this asrock even though its almost new.
What do you guys think of this MB?
Pretty good price and has everything i need:

Well, I came in a little late for suggestion.......but erh, I would do one thing before getting new hardware.
Full format my HDD, dissemble the whole PC, use a blower on the components.....rebuild, reinstall and all that. If it doesn't work then, I'll punch a wall and get my wrist fractured.
Did you do this?
Metalmurphy
April 20th, 2005, 17:57
Hum i didnt format but i did install a new OS in a new partition. I didnt dissemble everything. Only a few things. And im gonna do that as soon as i have time to :S Although right now i really doubt it will work. Its seems whatever i do i never get my computer right.

No, that board isn't great at all. That mobo doesn't have Dual Channel capability, while yours does as it is.. a fast P4 such as yours is so much slower without Dual Channel RAM, so that's quite a downgrade.. especially since it has a SiS chipset. The Via PT880 chipset is very versatile, and I doubt it's what's causing the problem.

Actually i think what the problem might be :S my damn cpu again. I ran PCmark04 and while the graphic score was pretty much the same of ppl with the same gfx card my CPU test score was half of most ppl score with the same CPU :S I'm running some more tests to be more certain. I guess that windows messed up icons was just a coincidence that led me to believe the card was the problem.

Hey also make sure your mobo supports the extra power supply and that your power supply is up to snuff. 300wats min for 6600 GT agp and i think 500 for your card.
Metalmurphy
April 21st, 2005, 00:48
500? oO. well i just bought a 450W. Why doesnt this type of requirements show up in the damn gfx card box. ARGH.

April 21st, 2005, 01:04
Actually they do list power requirement on some graphic cards as "xxx watt PSU" etc., but that is somewhat irrelevant given the discrepancies that exist among the labeling for PSUs.
Metelmurphy, I'd suggest that you post the brand of your PSU and/or other specifics such as amp on +12v etc., these values serve better to rate a PSU than wattage. I know PSU might not be the problem right now, but given how your machine is pretty high end, a quality PSU might be a worthy purchase (that you could've already made).
BTW, dont get frustrated yet, computers can be a real pain to get working when they decide to throw a fit ;). My own machine has been BSODing for 3 months and I've just now saw some light on the problem. Dont give up! :thumb:

Well then, I think I know what's wrong.. your PSU is fine.

Damn i think that was really it oO many many thanks cooliscool, I disasembled everything, cleaned up everything and now my temp idles at 45/47º C but it still goes to 70/75 when benchmarking. I disabled the clock throtling but i was carefull with the temps. The results in benchmarks really improved, and games as well. CS Source now runs at 60/90 fps instead of 15/30, and my PCmark CPU score went from 2000 and something to 4148. However its still a little slower then most guys scores in futuremark website like this one
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?pcm04=2854902
, and i was expecting games to run bit faster. NFSU2 still runs at very low speeds, @ 1024*768 NO AA and some options disabled like enhanced contrast, was running at 20/30 fps.
Just one question, does a cpu work faster at lower temperatures? Couse if so then i need better cooling.
Btw here's my scores in PCmark 2004:

Have you updated NFSU2 to patch 1.2? It increases performance for 6x00 cards. I'm running the game with all options enabled 4xAA/16xAF at 1280x1024 perfectly fine. Never dips below 30 fps at all. Stays mostly in the 50 fps.

70-75°C is still too hot I think. If that's the lowest you can get it to hit under load with the stock heatsink, I recommend you buy a new heatsink.
