Since PS2 cost $50 (99 SGD), tell me your opinion on the price of PS3 games...

Probably about $50. PS2 games will go way down in price when PS3 comes out.

it depends if the rumor about blu-ray discs is true (which i doubt). If it is, games may pop up to 60-70 bucks new like they were on the n64. If not, it'll stay the same at 50. Game companies can't afford to sell games starting less than 50 dollars these days, as games are costing more and more to make as each year goes on.

depends on the media, blue ray dics will be way more expansive than normal DVD or dual layer DVDs IIRC.

On average they'll be around 50$ but I think the influence of online games would have increased quite much by then. May be we get to play games only by monthly payment or something....

All PS3 games will be expensive at launch cuz they know if people buy the PS3's they gotta buy the gams to play on it. But I bet in a few months they will drop. I am guessing near $80.00 Canadian so about like evryone else is saying $50.00 US ;)

When you look at current game prices here in Holland I'd say it might go near the €60,- to €70,-
Games have become quite expensive ever since the Euro entered our lives. Not only did the shops add a 10% on every price:
F100,- became about €50,- in a small time. And 100 Gilders is 45 Euros.
But console games are already 60 Euros nowadays......
And then they wonder about piracy....

Ahh, I see. Pretty clever. I wonder if this is going to mess with peoples plans for disposable DVDs. Anyways I don't think this will raise the price of things that much because that said they hope to replace VCR and DVD with BDs, they couldn't do that if it
was more expensive.

I just hate that, now that I finally got PS2 there's soon gonna be PS3...This sucks... I think the PS3 prices will be about the same as PS2 now, but I too think that PS2 prices will go down when PS3 comes out...

PS3 still shouldn't be due for a while. I mean there is a stack of PS2 games still be to released and I think SONY would want to get the most they can from that before lowering the prices to make way for PS3.
ivalice

and that would lead to a chain reaction; if PS2 games price drop, so does PS1...
and then if PS4 games were to be released...the chain reaction would happen again...
but I don't think they would drop to such ridiculous amount..so I think one day the starting price of the games will be higher than before..

well the first release would be expensive maybe around $60 or so but I think the price will drop..

ivalice, once games get to a certain age there price starts to rise again because they are 'antique' and are worth more because they are old and aren't made anymore (eg snes).

The prices will be about the same as a current PS2 new title release. N64 games were more expensive because of the ROM chips and plastic casing and such (same reasons why a Gameboy Advance game averages the same as the cost of a PS2 / GC / Xbox game.
The media makeup of Blu-Ray disks are almost the same as DVD. The laser that reads them is mainly what is different. Factor in the fact that Sony is a developer in the technology, and you can rule out licensing fees (Microsoft has to pay fees for DVD format games...Sony does not...This explains why Sony can market more games cheaper). Now add in the fact that this would be a good method for Sony to roll out the technology....and it adds up to the fact that if the PS3 does use Blu Ray..the games will not be more then current costs.

Hmmm I don't know about that. By the time PS3 comes out al the great games that will be out soon (Gran turismo 4, Final Fantasy XI, Maybe XII) Will most likely be greatest hits. Meaning that you will be able to pick them up for approximately $19.99 US. Thats not too shabby for great games like that. Console games do seem to retain their value for a long time though.

If the drives are madly expensive, they might want to push up the price of the games to counterbalance. I was looking around the blu-ray website, and they even made a disc made out of paper 51% by weight, so those would be quite inexpensive. But the prospects of having blu ray in our next sony console would either make it impossible if sony doesn't want to jack up the price, or they'll have to ask for like $400 starting for the ps3 with 60-70 bucks per new game to make up for greatly increased production costs. Just a thought, though, there's really no way to tell as of now.

With those prices, welcome to Canada. :p Actually my PS2 was near $600.00 And games are always $70.00 new for console.

yeah, but is that canadian? The USD is stronger than the CND, iirc, so prices would be lower. It's still roughly the same price... except for the 600 dollar console, that's just crazy :p

Well We had to get it when it was brand new. :p Ya I understand that US is far different that CAN. :p I was just jokin'
Well they have to make up fr the price somewhere, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I bet they are going to charge some crazy price for the console though. I personally won't buy any of the next gen consoles unless they have full HDTV support and also widescreen support in their games. ;)

since
PS1: 299 USD
PS2: 299 USD
PS3 will be: 299 USD...I think so.
and also, what do you mean by having HDTV and widescreen support of the game?

Anyone with a widescreen TV can tell you that everything looks fat if its not compatible.

so is it a good thing or a bad thing?
Vanit
May 5th, 2004, 11:30
Personally I hate widescreen.
Widescreen is brilliant as it's more accurate to the way you see, the problem is 4:3 stuff on a 16:9 screen looks cack.
Vanit
May 5th, 2004, 11:48
I just prefer a screen thats tall and wide, rather than just wide.

Personally I hate widescreen.
I love widescreen.
If you have 16x9 enhanced mode on your TV, you get all 500 lines of resolution (otherwise its 480) from the DVD. (VHS is 250 lines... not sure what BETA is)
This mode focuses the electron guns, so you get the best picture possible without HDTV.
Plus some games use it too!
Soul Caliber 2
Star Ocean 3
their are lots more but I can't think of any right now... :)
Well a 32" widescreen has a larger viewable area on WS films than a 32" 4:3 screen

Well yeah, But I was just saying 16x9 enhanced mode is great for 4:3 TVs

ehh..how do you set widescreen mode anyway?
Razor Blade

>>and also, what do you mean by having HDTV and widescreen support of the game?
Well whas everyone else said already :p
Widescreen is great. If you have the media and hardware to make it work great.
>>:ehh..how do you set widescreen mode anyway?
On most Widescreen TV's (If not all) There is a button on your remote to stretch the picture, zoom in (mine has 2 zoom settings) Make it horizon so the center is normal but the sides are stretched, or the normal 4:3 which makes your tv have two black bars on the left and right.
>>so is it a good thing or a bad thing?
Well since I got my Widescreen TV, I have trouble going back to my small 4:3 ones. :p It is in the end a personal choice of what you like better. Wider is better IMO, And anything that supports widescreen makes it feel like you are m ore there with a cinematic quality feeling to it.
Errr, Hope that sums up most of your questions bout it. :p That is why I won't buy any nextgen consoles unless they support it.

Japanese company has created a blu-ray disk that is mostly made from paper, reducing costs dramaticly. PS3, xbox2 etc.. For me its not the price of the disk that matters its a matter of capacity. I dispise paying 50 bucks for a ps2 dvd game when only a gig or so of data on the disk is actually used, even worse when you get a cheesy game thats like 800mb's or below. I just think to myself im buying mostly a blank dvd. Point is if they start using blu-ray i do hope they try to make the games so lush with graphics/sound/movies that they can fill up or at least get close to filling up that disk. Otherwise ill feel like im being ripped off again.

Well for me it's the quality. Virtua Fighter 4 was only near 400mb! That is damn low! But the graphics were great and the game was a blast to play. But as graphics get better and textures get higher resolution and sounds get crisper file sizes jump up as well. I actually wish instead of taking up more room, that they looked for beter compression keeping the same quality. It seems they lost that, which makes me pissed off.
