I'm trying to run FF8 under XP Home. So far, it's not working. What happens is, I get the game to install alright, but then nothing happens when I run the program. The mouse pointer does its little hourglass thing for a few seconds, and then nothing. However, if I open up task manager I can see a process called ff8.exe which is using zero resources. I've tried the patch, I've tried changing my drive letters, I've tried compatibility modes. Nothing seems to work. Can anybody bail me out here?

exactly same symptoms like clive barker's undying, rainbow six or system shock 2.. this one is then simple, i guess: "not compatible".. try it on win98 (maybe win2k works too)

It works perfectly on Windows XP Professional for me. I just had to install the geforce patch to fix the lines across the screen in the game.
Rubberchicken, what are your pc specs? The game shouldn't be too hungry on resources because the game is a few years old (1999,2000) i think.

There shouldn't be any problem with my system... I've got a 2 GHz processor, 1 gig of RAM, GeForce4... Video shouldn't be an issue yet, though, since the game won't even get THAT far.
Only thing I can think of is that the game works with XP Pro, but not Home. Could've sworn I heard from somebody who ran it under XP Home, though...
Oh, and Reptile... I can run all three of the games you mentioned on my XP system. My condolences.

I have ran FF8 on XP home and professional. What version of Directx are you running? If its 9, you might want to go back to 8 and see what happens.

The directx version shouldn't be a problem because it is backwards compatible.
Plus you can't really uninstall directx9 and go back (well you can but it's not advised), and the only other way is a format.

I have DirectX 9 (for Defiance). It's a little late to try going back...

Well... I don't remember the site but there was a lot of games that were tested on WinXP and didn't work... but there was something strange... the list had a fallout(1) and I have it and it works fine... but a lot of old games like nuclear strike, railroad tycoon 2 that i have, don't work on windows XP...

Tried running in Software? Or if you're running in software (doubt it), tried Hardware? Could also just be the problem I had... if I remember right... it had some sort of trouble playing the opening movie, so installing... uhh... hmmm... maybe you can just skip the opening movie by pressing buttons?
