correct me if i am wrong, but i think the sega saturn was the first console to include:
online gaming (Japan only)
analogue joypads (like playstation, released after launch)
memory cards for game saves (very big!)
video from cd's (a card plugs in to play cd+g's)
photo cd playback (was cd-i before this?)
and cd games that did not feature cheesy fmv games! (crappy mega-cd games come to mind, night trap, texas ground zero & sewer something)

I'd just like to say that sega has time and time again proven to be a big innovator with their products. If anyone likes to challenge this point, simply look to Kaiser :)

Sega's, IMO, the most innovative company out there... a few corrections: the genesis featured an online mode of sorts (don't exactly remember how it worked) on the US. As said above, the SegaCD featured a memory card system of sorts with the internal/external back up ram.
As for the "cheesy" FMV games it wasn't Sega's nor the SegaCD's fault... it's just that at the time of appearance of the SegaCD the world thought that digital gaming was synonim of "interactive" movies... look at the CD-I or the 3DO (though it had a lots of normal games), they all saw a version of Mad Dog Mcsomething 1/2, Dragon's Lair 1/2, etc...

Best FMV game on Sega CD (I think) was Sewer Shark

Sewer Shark was crap, graphically speaking the best FMV game on the Sega CD was a title that took place in Texas (I forgot the name of the game, but it had the name Texas somewhere on the title) and involved aliens. Actually it was slightly fun as well...

Kaiser is correct. A form of online gaming came out in Japan in the for of a link up cartridge for Genesis.
Analog controls came out long before. Some pong units had the feature as well as others. We cannot recall off the top of our heads though
Believe it or not the first system to use memory cards was the Neo Geo AES system. It let gamers take their saves and use them in the Neo Geo arcade games.
Turbografix CD introduced the first CD based games to not use FMV. It as well as Sega CD, CD I, 3DO. JVC X'Eye ..were the kings of the hill for Photo CD, CD+G, and VCD before Saturn

I thought the NetLink modem (http://darkwatcher.psxfanatics.com/console/segalink.jpg) was sold in the U.S. as well.

heh, whenever someone said something like "that game is so old, it wouldn't have analog" I always said "Pong had analog".
DW is of course right about analog controls being something old. Hey, the PC standard joystick is analog. But madmonkeyboy specifically said "analogue joypads", which was something new... Altho I am not sure if Saturn made it before N64. I was always under the impression that Sega and Sony made analogue joypads after the N64 controller design was public. Can anyone verify that?

texas ground zero?
Yeah, that one (though the name was Ground Zero Texas ;) )... it was as lame as the others but not so boring and with seemingly nice FMVs considering the potential of the Sega CD.

oops, well at least i got the Ground Zero part to go together, but didnt get Texas in the right place. i remember reading magazines, those FMV games never got good scores, like "D"

hey, D wasn't really FMV, right? I mean it's rendered in real time, isn't it?
BTW, that game was kinda cool.
Kaiser Sigma

Indeed, D wasn't a FMV game, it's was more of a cinematic game in the sense that you had to bear a lot of rendered movies... the Sega CD had similar titles, like Jurassic Park, Mansion of the Lost Souls, amongst others...

online gaming (Japan only)
Netlink was available in America.
Here (http://www.atarihq.com/2678/3party/cvc.html) is an example of online gaming before the SS. I think x-band was before netlink too.
analogue joypads
Was the NES Max an analog joypad?
cd games that did not feature cheesy fmv games!
Turbo Duo was before SS.
memory cards for game saves
PC Engine Shuttle Backup Unit?
I think the snes had an accessory so one could save games externally.

well as has been said, Pong had analog

well as it has been said a joystick is not a joypad.

I never heard of the NES Max. After a few minutes of Googling, it seems to me it's just a digital gamepad with a sliding d-pad instead of a traditional push-down design. I don't recall any NES titles that supports analog controls anyway.

well as has been said, Pong had analog :rolleyes:i am not talking about a modified mouse component, but a multidirectional joystick, just like the x-box hard drive was an inovation in the context of games consoles, it may not be completley new, but was first used in it's field as a games console device.

sega cd featured games such as lunar which were great non-fmv games.

sega cd featured games such as lunar which were great non-fmv games.yes, i am wrong to say saturn was first to have non fmv games, as mega-cd was more a victim of it's times, rather than a system that was designed for these publishers excuses for games, as a camera is probably cheaper and easier than coding a "proper" game.
p.s. i loved silpheed and sonic cd, they were "mega"!!!!!!!!!!
