I have two Pokemon games saves from 2000/2001 recently i tried to load them in vba 1.6a and it's like the *.sav isn't there.
Is there any way i can check the *.sav files and see if they are really blank?

.sav is a battery save. You can import it using File->Import->Battery file. They are automatically created if the game uses a save memory.
.sgm are save states that contain the full state of the emulator, so that you can save anywhere.
The files are not interchangeable.

Forgotten i tried that already and it didn't work :( I know the sav files are battery files.
Also i searched for an old Visual boy release and still no show. All seems to indicate my saves some how got overwritten :(

You mean you couldn't find an older version, or the older version didn't work? If you need an older version, I have 1.1, 1.31, 1.4, 1.5, 1.51, 1.6beta2, and 1.6

VisualBoy is no longer supported or needed. Use VisualBoyAdvance instead which is better, has much more features.

Well now, that could be the source of your problem. I don't think savs from the gb/gbc version of visualboy are compatible with savs from the gba visualboy advance.
You can get the gb/gbc version of visualboy at www.zophar.net
Edit: It's also likely that the gb/gbc version stored the savs in a different folder than VBA does, you may need to move them.

Well I tried all that so i must assume that the save games hare corrupted or they were overwritten a long time ago some how :(
Like they say easy come easy go.

I just ran an experiment using pokemon yellow, VB 1.4.12, and VBA 1.6.I used VB 1.4.12, started a new game, saved both from within the game itself, and using a state. I then opened the game in VBA 1.6 and loaded the game, the continue option came up and with I chose it it worked fine. I then attempted to load the state. The colors were way off, and it loaded the game from the beginning instead of from where I had saved. When I got to the new/continue screen, there was no continue option. I tried reloading the rom, the colors went back to normal, but the ingame save seems to have been erased.
My conclusion: Your savegame did get erased, and it happened when you attempted to load the savestate. In short, you're screwed, sorry.
