Of course there wasn't such a thing as photography back then, so they used charcoal sketches I suppose.

Well but the truth is that ugly or not he was one of the top members of the Shinsengumi... they were really bad guys, he ended up with a cheap job after the war though (working as a security guard or something like that, correct me if I'm wrong)... a sad ending for such a man...

Freaks ? What did you expect ? Watsuki's Saitou ? :p
The Shisengumi were lots of things except freaks, read a bit about them and you will find what a great group it was...

June 5th, 2003, 06:07
hmmm... and is he also a legendary swordsman in real life?
Kaiser Sigma
June 5th, 2003, 15:05
Yeah, he even had a special technique that consisted of a forward lunge with the sword (or something similar... it's been a while since I read this) which Nobuhiro Watsuki later used to create the famous "Gatotsu" seen on the manga/anime...
Eface
June 5th, 2003, 15:12
it's the same/similar move as in Kenshin?
It's indeed powerfull, but leaves a big gap in defence... but the range and speed would take care of that problem, as i see it
Kaiser Sigma
June 5th, 2003, 15:22
Nah, it was just a lunge with the left hand, but not so powerful as the one on the anime... though supposedly it was stronger than Okita's triple stabbing.
For what I gather about this move it must have suffered from a similar problem as the one of the Gatotsu, since it's the same problem that all lunge attacks have... a blind spot.

Kenshin's style is intersting, but has got some serious flaws too...

Indeed, it's one of those things that I enjoy reading about ;)
Kenshin's style is complex but it has the drawback of the huge pressure that inflicts on the body of the person... I seriously doubt that a person in real life could use that style for long periods, contrary to what is said in the manga that someone with a great physical condition like Hiko (Kenshin's master) shouldn't have troubles using it...

Both ended, the anime ended disgraceful with the 30+filler eps, and gracefully with the Seisohen OVAs. The manga ended a few years ago at vol 29...

"Reminiscence OVA" the best!!
One thing my mind cant take off in seisouhen was what was that disfiguring disease both kenshin and kaoru got?... its like their flesh is rotting....

The same drawback i saw... but there are others... the reaction time needs to be short already (>.3 sec), or he would need to provoke attacks in regions he chooses which gives him about infinite time, but since he does not do that... he needs short reaction time, and a helluva fast eyesight... It's possible, but it's hard...
Kaiser Sigma
June 7th, 2003, 04:08
The short reaction time isn't that unlikely since we are talking about Batou techniques, their nature is based entirely on the initial speed of the strike... as for the eyesight part, I agree you need an eagle eye in order to perform such kind of attacks at those speeds... though I suppose that you don't need to see your oponent to know where to strike, you just need to now where he is...

2, namely Seisouhen(2 vcds)(end of rurouni kenshin, based on the manga of the same name), and Reminiscence(2 vcds)(How he became the slasher, and how he got the crossmark on his face)
Just buy them on tokyo kids.....

There are exactly 6 ovas. 4 about the origins and the death of his first love and the second two that are really strange and very very far appart from the original manga.
And, does the hiten mitsurugi ryu really exist?
And about reaction time(less than one second) and speed of techniques, i dont see the problem, we do that every day in karate do training. Almost every martial art needs precisely timing and reaction time. It shouldn't be an issue.

Well you are both right. There are 2 OVAs, but 6 OVA episodes.

You are all missing chapter 96, which was never aired for obvious reasons (ppl got sick of so many fillers) which was a chapter were they tried to tie some knots on the relationships between the characters...

so there are 6 episodes for the whole 2 OVA? about 3 episodes per OVA?

Watch Rurouni Kenshin.
Kaiser Sigma
June 26th, 2003, 04:11
Lord of Darkness, there are ppl who don't know who was Saitou Hajime ? :p
He was one of the 3 most renowned members of the Shinsengumi, think of them as a sort of an underground group of cops... their job was to deal with the ones involved on the rebellion as well as to deal with the Ishin Shishis that posed a threat to the shogun... Saitou was the leader of the third division of the Shinsengumi.

Watch Rurouni Kenshin.im done with eps 1 and 2 of the ova. i dun fell like hunting for all 96 eps of the tv series tho
Kaiser Sigma
June 28th, 2003, 04:10
You don't need the 96 eps, the anime follows the manga up to vol 17 or so. I think that the anime chapter is 60-70... the rest are mindless fillers...

June 28th, 2003, 04:31
What's in vol 17? Shishio's story?
Kraelis
July 5th, 2003, 09:21
If I'm not mistaken, yes. Though the OAV picks up on Kenshin's past and an attempt to cover the Enishi arc.
Yes, speed, reaction time is important in any martial arts, but the rate at which Kenshin does it is impossible. The Amakakeru Ryu no Hirameki is one such example.
Anyway, I saw something about the real Saitou in a magazine before. Same pic. Hey, Shiori, did you scan this?
Kaiser Sigma
July 5th, 2003, 18:12
AFAIK the pic Shiori's posted is from a drawing of Saitou, I've also one of Tokio (his wife) but if I'm not mistaken they may be the only picture about him.

Kenshin's style is the Batou-ryu or the art of killing an enemy with one slash after unsheating your sword from it's "saya", or scabbard.
I also read about Iaido, which almost the same like Batou style(correct me if I'm wrong). And there's also Kendo. "way of the sword"
So i'm guessing Batou = the style
Sai = user
so, Batousai = user of the style Batou :p
BTW, I'm taking fencing. :p
Just my 2 cents.
Kaiser Sigma
July 6th, 2003, 01:44
We already spoke about that on one of the first pages :p
As for the Battousai term, it's explained on the manga by Jin-E on one of the first big encounters...
