I know it's a stupid question about DirectX

I know it is stupid for you, but I need to ask something: I'm using now DirectX 8.0a(latest official). I noticed that most people in this forum use DirectX 8.1 beta. Is it better than 8.0a? Is it stable? Where can I get it? I looked everywhere and I only found 8.0a.

I'm afraid that you'll just have to search around and hope that you "chance" upon it. That is what I did. I found mine at 3DChipset, but it was only available for 12 hours. MS doesn't want it out yet, so sites that have it have to take it down quickly. Best of luck locating it.
BTW it seems to me to be a little faster than DX 8.0a and is quite stable. I've had no problems w/it at all.

I found it, too. It's a russian ftp site. Win9x and Win2k are available. It's build 648, so it's the newest version I've seen so far.

There is a program called DirectX Unninstaller. Get it, and then reinstall 8.0a. What happened? I installed it and it worked just fine. Download it here (http://www.ebrink.com/dxun/Direct.htm)

the cursed 8.1 beta..DO NOT download it..why? because for one thing it is no better then 8.0a and is very unstable (it being a beta)
also im suprised no one had this problem yet..i cannot run any d3d game (all the pc games i own run on d3d just my damn luck)when i load the game it says "beta directdraw expired..please update" so i went to the ms website..got 8.0a..still happened so i manually deleted directx from the hd and registry..and it STILL happened..also someone may know howto fix it cause i know quite a few people have it..they most likely have also ran into this problem..if they didnt their really lucky..anyway any reply will be VERY MUCH appreciated..oh yeah forgot to add this but zephon the link you posted leads to a "file not found" page

Heh, well what do you expect? It's beta software. It's still in its testing stages. I mean, if you install a pre-release test version of anything then you have to expect some problems with it. You install it at your own risk.

I got that message too.... "beta directdraw expires....." I fixed it by updating to the new directx 8.1 beta 648.. Now everything runs great.. I do notice its faster than directx 8a.. Haven't had a problem.. It also fixed a problem I was having with my thrustmaster rumble gamepad.. Get the new beta..

Directx 8.1 sucks,it's slower than 8.0a in the vertex shader rendering and in some other parts,I used to have it installed but now I went back to 8.0a.

well..after 3 days of tryin to get rid of the damn thing..i have almost everything running now..currently the only thing that doesnt run is my window emulators (zsnes and epsxe) but for zsnes i can use the dos..for epxe i can use my new ps1..so problem kinda solved i guess
