It's always switching the icons. I end up getting the explorer 'e' for 'My Briefcase' and outlook icons for 'Word', etc. Is this some kind of harmless virus, or is my comp becoming senile at old age?

Though I don't know if it still works, under Win95 a similar error could be solved by deleting the file named "ShellIconCache" (don't worry, it's dynamically created, so when you reboot it'll reappear) in your Windows folder. If it's constantly happening, however, it's probably the result of something that'd take more aggressive means to fix.

As cluthu said, it sounds like an icon caching problem, maybe you can use TweakUi from Micro$oft to rebuild the icon cache.
