Morbidus, i think i see what is still missing in your style. If it is the style and crispness of your lines, you are VERY good, i can't match that even closely. But your drawing seem to be a bit lifeless, it doesn't seem to move, to live.

I've decided for myself, that even before i become better in my techniques, i should learn how to make a drawing alive, it's hard in the beginning, but graduatly, it becomes easier ;)
the easiest way is to add wind, that always does the trick :)

now that I finally have scanned some drawings of me I can post them weeee...sadly enough some of my best are still in the artschool...anyway

Carnage
April 9th, 2003, 13:09
a comic is very different then normal drawing...first we would have to all use one certain style else it would be quite confusing...but it would be a great idee:)

Well, thank you :) you know, it was hard work too, I'm doing this since 4 years, so its normal to get more into this and to get better results. Nobody should be despressed of this ;) At the end, anime-artworks is just a hobby of mine :)

Lord Kane:
>>Toriyama: Please can we hire you to do game art? I'll give you a cookie!<<

April 10th, 2003, 07:55
4 YEARS?!?!!?
if you only drew those 4 years, i can understand, but i've been drawing about 4 years too, but there is no comparison between us. The way you know the anatomy is incredible ;)

Carnage
April 10th, 2003, 08:25
to think I almost never use anatomy to draw something:eyes: I just begin at 1 point and draw further and further...in some drawings this is really good but in the most it kinda sucks:heh:

and I found another link that might be useful for us here (http://anime.darkpact.com/list.php)

Tori-Yama
April 10th, 2003, 09:02
Well, the fact is that I'm student at college for desgin and art. So I'm a little bit more involved in this field. You guys here are just not to be used to this sort quality. For myself, I have a bunch of friends who are drawing too, and some are much better than me. Its all the way how do you look on it ;) And again, its no reason to be despressed

Carnage
April 10th, 2003, 09:08
2 of my friends also go to a school where they spend the most of the time drawing stuff too, they now can draw things wich you can't tell if its a real picture or a drawing...next year will be the 6 year(the last)for one of them and he sure has acomplished some heavy things....but for me drawing stays a hobby, and I don't see any reasons why I should be depressed, the most ppl I know can hardly draw more then a stick man:D

Eface
April 10th, 2003, 11:51
guess i should do some drawing that focus on anatomy, so i'll get proportions better :)

the_morbidus
April 10th, 2003, 13:23
ya, toriyama is right, well i only started drawing 2 years ago and because i practice a little bit everyday i get better, i'm also thinking on going to some art colledge after finishing high school!!!!!, but for now it stays a hobbie, good luck to everybodie in their drawings!!!!

carbage thanks for the link

well good news guys, i'm picking people from the NGemu like the NGemu crew and the NGemu beyhond hope team and other people like myself of course, i'll probably release a comic per week , i won't include everybody in every comic and the comic won't be bigger than 3 pages so the range is normally 1-2.i'll try my best so just see and wait, k????

the comic will be manga like comic!!!!

Razor Blade
April 10th, 2003, 22:31

Wow your drawings are awsome the_morbidus.

Anyway i decided I'll post a drawing, I've been practicing anime for a short time so it's not that great. It's a picture of Naru from love hina as requested from a friend, it's incomplete as I still have most of the shading to do.

the_morbidus
April 20th, 2003, 05:14

I like your style, but something is missing... like misc details in the clothing

the_morbidus
April 24th, 2003, 23:31
well i'm not a pro and still have a long way to get there , my problem is that i have some trouble with the cloths, don't quite know where to make the wrinkles, well i know but they don't look that real, also because i don't make much shading and they don't look that much real!!!!!

still have to improve a lot.

Mr. Killjoy
April 24th, 2003, 23:32
You don't need to make accurate details, instead of making lines, make shadows ;)

the_morbidus
April 24th, 2003, 23:47
tx killjoy, now i'm gonna try to cell-shade the pic. of the girl with the big weapon (don't know the name) , i guess i shouldn't have shaded the weapon ,the ground and the hair, its probably going to be more difficult with that!!!!!

Mr. Killjoy
April 24th, 2003, 23:51

April 26th, 2003, 00:06

Strider
April 26th, 2003, 00:13
yes, i believe the pic got scanned a bit lopsided, heres the actual picture in the game for reference... apparently i also finished it a little bit differently on the far right side, musta been too dark for me to see when i was drawing

who's sul reaver???

EDIT:
do you believe i used 41 images to create this 5 sec. avatar??? amazing, imagine how many images do people use to create a 24-25 min. japanise animation its crazy, normally its 24 images per second on tv. but mine is like 8.2 images per sec. so animations will be like 15 images per sec.X 60 sec. X 25 min. =22500 images

well i was looking at killjoy's charset and i came up with this, hope you guys like it.

well about the comic, i got a part time job a month ago, it takes much of my time, also i've been working hard this last two months in school because school is almost over(and my marks are so bad....) , i'll probably start the comic during summer but can't promise much, also this drawing was done during the few time i got free from lunch.

Mr. Killjoy

I see, you are more experienced with pencil colerations while I prefer CGs (Computer Gfx). A good combination of this is the program "open canvas". This allows you to draw like you would use a pancil but with the comfort of CGs.

thanks for the link.
yup. just started using photoshop/psp 2 months ago, and i liked it just as i like manual coloring. been browsing through the open portal site and seen the usual stuff like masks, layer, transparencies, brush types, ect. what features separates it from photoshop, corel and paint shop pro and with their hundred or so different plug-ins?

this was my very first coloring practice in photoshop. : ) made me feel to good to learn much since then. colored from the manga i''s. copyright © Katsura Masakazu, Shueisha and Studio K2R.

it would be nice if you could post the original image too, so we could compare them better. But this looks already quite nice :)

Well, the advantage of OC is that you could draw much better "realistic" shadows as you could in PS or PSP. Thats because OC features much more different brush options and gives you more the feeling of real drawing. PS and PSP I would prefer better to make cellshading colerations and layer-effects. They are much more calculating and exact.

I think I got problems for proportions

Tori-Yama
May 10th, 2003, 16:20
Fist of all: This looks really good :) And there are just a few mistakes I guess, the major problem is the properation between the head and the rest of the body, hes just too big. And in my opinion is the chin a little bit too far away from the rest of the face, this makes him look fett. But as I said, its a matter of taste. Try to set some points of shadows in the face to make it look more three-dimensional.

BTW: I don't know how experienced you are with cuttlings, a characteristic of good artists is how do they get them to look realistic. Well, some artist prefer self designed (and quite unrealistic) curlings to give them drawings a persific look like in dragonball by Akira Toriyama (see the image). So, it depends on you and your skills if you want them realistic or not. But overall its very nice and well done.

Mr. Killjoy
May 10th, 2003, 18:06
>> This looks really good
Thanks

>> Try to set some points of shadows in the face to make it look more three-dimensional.

In fact, I tried to not make it realistic... I know there is a prob with proportions, but I drew it quite quickly in my bad-lightened room...

I once drew a girl from a mag., but I haven't scanned it yet...
I did it so well that all my teachers asked "Oh, she's very pretty, she's your gf?" (then: "I have no gf?")

go on ;)

>>In fact, I tried to not make it realistic... I know there is a prob with proportions, but I drew it quite quickly in my bad-lightened room...<<

Then you should try cellshading, this gives the drawing a more anime-looking style, AND if you did it right, it looks really cool and a "sort of" realistic too. The best way to learn this is to imitate shadows of real photos and convert them to cells I guess, I learned it that way. And of course, imitate at other artists.

thanks.
yes, its mine...although, my art is not that good...at least not yet...

i really have a very long but exciting way to go to surpass the level of my classmates and friends....especially with that special girl that inspired me in the arts.

about the secret...it's the exact opposite! i'm in the process of rediscovering my faith and relationship with God right now...
haven't been doing worthwhile things in my life for a while back so now i'm dedicating my best efforts into this life and the gifts he has invested on me... and believe it or not, it really helped me improve not only in the arts, but on everything else as well...especially during the times i really felt undeserving to be in an art school. (sometimes i still do)

and that's so much more effective and better than selling your soul any day. and besides, you really can't sell something which belongs to the Creator.

:D

don't think that way! i wouldn't have improved if i was always disheartened or severely awestruck by the works of my classmates...we all wanted to be much, much better...as should everyone be. the good ones of course didn't want just to stay in thier 'level' since it was inevitable that the rest of us would soon catch up or surpass them. it's the constant competition that drive us to keep improving.

Hmh, do ya prefer crosshatch or smoothshading? Well, for quickdrawings and for mangas I prefer crosshatch becuase of the timebonus and its a lot less expensive than these foils. But both are great techniques for shading...if you can handle them ;>

I just noticed that there is a difference between the inc sketch and the last drawing, I know that the shadows of the last are the central point but the outlines and the proportions are much less detailed, are the first one initial or the last? Or both from different artists/photos? Well, don't take it amiss but it just catches my eyes. BTW: I will get my gfxboard in a few days. I ordered the "Vacom Volito" GFX Pan (50 $ / € ) and I'm really really curious about that. I will post my experiences with that.

the_morbidus
May 14th, 2003, 21:19
this one was a quick drawing, i was bored at math class so i did this girl, trying to work on shadows by myself, well i am really inferior to 7th in art, the thing is that i never took arts before, well i'm probably going to take grade 11 visual arts next year, i had to take some test drawings to enter it because i didn't had arts from grade 9 or 10 , i couldn't take grade 12 visual arts because i never took grade 9 or grade 10 arts in canada, last year was my first year in canada so i had to take some extra english courses to speed up my english learning rates and i couldn't fit in arts, this year i had to take three sciences, so also no room, next year i'm going to graduate and i will only have done grade 11 arts..... its sad... i won't be able to enter a university so i have to take a shot at colledge.

this drawing is kinda blank, i only had an hour do do it, i'm not fast enough, not many skills , anyways i'll try to put a background to make it look better, so when i finish it i'll post it again, also could you explain what does crosshatch and smoothshading mean???

yup, the shadowed parts were the focus of the last one. a factor of my strokes would be the mood or the style and feel i like to incorporate in the drawing...hence, the more 'rough and raw' treatment of the last one since its more of a expressionistic piece rather than the other two.

i like both smooth shading and crosshatching although i use crosshatching more often in my b&w inked works while i tend to use smooth shading in my colored and or pencilled works. the mood or theme of the drawing is a factor as well, since i like to use and practice different styles and try to use the most appropriate one for the drawing. sometimes i use both as i use a a smooth coloring transition in coloring cross-hatched inked works.

wow, i wish i could buy a tablet pad too. had to use my money to upgrade my video card since we're going to study 3dsm, lightwave, and maya this coming semester. oh well, i guess i'll start saving again. : )

>morbidus
about ink sketching. it's fun and challenging. the way you just get up and go with it gives it an instantaneous and exciting feel...much like brush sketching. with no pencils, no guidelines, no erasers to correct your mistakes, it gives you speed and confidence. when i make mistakes (as i often do) i tend to understand more clearly how and why the mistake happened and how to avoid it in the future...and even if you did make a mistake, you'll learn to disguise and use it as a nice, integral part of the drawing. (have you ever experienced that a errant line or stroke actually made the drawing better?) and you don't need to be skilled when practicing ink sketching, remember skill cannot be attained without practice...and how can you skilled if you don't practice in the first place? : ) and we don't use the term 'inferior', just 'less practiced/less experienced'

cross-hatching is a type of shading where the artist uses intersecting lines which gets more closely-packed and denser as it represents a more darker, shadowed part of the figure. (jim lee's x-men)
smoothshading is shading where the transition beetween the darks and lights are smooth and blended pretty well. lines/strokes are so fine that they are not that obvious to the eye. (much like phtographic-like drawings)

times like these i wish i had a scanner. the drawings i scanned and posted were already quite old. maybe when school starts again i'll scan some much better examples. i'll leave with some more ink sketches.

btw, you're getting better. : )

the_morbidus
May 15th, 2003, 01:56
thanks 7th, well i shouldn't use the term "inferior" , you're right, also i was checking some drawings that i did last year and they suck so much compared to the ones that i do right now, it was worth the time that i used every single day to draw, "practise will take you to perfection" or something like that..... anyways i'll continue doing my best, because i know i can reach your level, see ya!!!!!!!!!

Well, there is no special trick or something. You have just to keep in mind that your shadings should be very light. Then, repeat shading on the same point ever and ever and ever and ever (do I repeat myself?) and ever again. This gives you the opportunity to set very smooth shadows.

>>also , i have a heavy hand, so many lines can be seen after i erase them, could somebody tell me how to prevent this?? do i need a different HB or B pencil???

Heavy hand? Just try to draw softer ;)

it really depends on the viewer...

just remember that girls are far more sensitive with issues and things about their body... even on a simple drawing.

to be ok, it has to be done in a really good taste. (has a deep artistic quality). also the personality, upbringing and culture of the person is a huge factor. remember that art like these (i'm assuming that drawing is somehow inspired by mai?) are from a very 'iberal' country like japan and france (no offense meant to these countries). but remember, the personality of the person is more important.

i mean, do the girls you know purposely dress wihout bras and keep showing off their panties ? there's a reason for that and a reason why they don't like girls represented cheaply that way. i understand why some girls would find that drawing offensive.
most probably you were 'labelled' that way since people often associate the artwork with the way the artist thinks about the subject.

nice BG btw.

for normal pencils i woul still stick to staedtler (HB-7B), paper would be canson (french brand?) watercolor is prang : ), reeves would be good for goauche and acrylic, le franc and bourgeois (did i spell that right?) for oil paints, sakura for poster paints, colored pencils would be colleen or crayola brand and for brushes sakura and the classic chinese brush :)

p. shots means underwear shots.

btw, thanks again for the O.C. recommendation.
i'm also just starting to use painter 7 too. its has a huge brush and medium selection; the chalk and oil pastels are really awesome.
photoshop, open canvas, paint shop pro, and painter; have some unique properties for each of them thats why i love to use them depending on the style and feel i would like to use.

a friend asked for a drawing of mitsui from slam dunk. 2nd time i used OC, first one was the face on the 'mouse art' section. still haven't gotten used to it just yet...

what board do you recommend?
i'm thinking of getting a wacom brand although i'm not yet decided on which model has the right balance of affordability and technical capability.

I'm using the Wacom Volito pan. Its less expensive (60€/$) but with a very good handling.

Yeah, like me, they are just too square and if you miss the right perspective it looks like crap. BTW: I hate cars.

Strider
June 14th, 2003, 04:52
well, most of the site is technically not an adult place... just that it has a lot of advertisements to adult places and its fair share of adult stuff on the site
