Help me to get started with Linux pls....

Well I just partitioned my HD and got Corel Linux from a friend, I don't know if this is good version or not but I got it. I gave it 3gb of space. Now I wanted to ask a few questions. First, are there any free ISPs that support Linux? And second, what programs/ other assorted items should I get for Linux?

Well as long as you don't own a win modem and know your connection details all real isp's should work. Depending on your distro you should more or less have everything on the cds that came with it. (I don't know corel's all that well)

Corel's distro is based on Debian, which uses the .deb and apt-get packaging system. As Betamax said, you should have pretty much everything you'd need to get started, though after getting comfortable you may want to download updated versions of your software (especially Gnome and/or KDE, if you use them), since most newer versions have speed and stability improvements.

As for Free ISP support, I can't really say. However, don't most of them use a special client to dialin? That is, you have to use thier software under Windows? If so, then I'd say you're out of luck unless they also ofter Linux dialup software (which isn't likely). You could, of course, use Windows to download any software you'd like to compile/install then copy it over within Linux. Just a thought.

Corel is a ****e distro. Newbie's should stick with something like Mandrake. Extremely easy to use..

Anyhow, any decent distro will come with packages for most programs, like various window managers, irc clients, multimedia applications, etc..

Well I don't know much about us dial ups but over here most just use striaghtforward dial up networking in windows so they are easily enough to setup. The notible exceptions are aol,freeserve and compuserve.
