LMFAO x 3:D

Was Hawaii called Hooterville:D

Kamina
March 10th, 2003, 22:13
Nah, hawaii is 'mas americas.' Not sure why, but the south pacific (figi, tonga, etc... I think at least) is in the hooterville description. Heh, me and my brother were trying to figure that out last night. He was no help though since coupled with my junior high spanish, and his stupidity, we got nowhere :p

Ryos
March 10th, 2003, 23:31
I didn't care for that. BTW, you forgot to label France as a new (old) enemy. :p

Well, you could go by the fact that one day Latino Americans will be the majority in America to justify the use of Spanish - or simply not care that it's Spanish. It's not like any of the words are all that hard to figure out even if you've never seen a word of Spanish in your life.

Syed Fawad
March 11th, 2003, 16:33
I think its funny, but it'll be a bit more funny if I could understand Spanish or that map had been English :p

Here's a translation of some words on the map, since I don't know Spanish I wasn't able to translate some words... Can anyone help our friend Napro with the translation of those words?

Nieve = Snow
Alces = Some kind of deer... I don't know the English word for Alce.
Más América = More America
Café = Coffe
Selva = Jungle
Países más pequeños que Hooterville: Countries smaller than Hooterville
Comunistas malvados!!! = Evil Comunists
Amiguitos = Friends
Nuevo mejor amiguito = New best friend
Arena = ? (just arena, maybe)
Diamantes = Diamonds
Petróleo = Oil
Antiguo enemigo = Old enemy
Nuevos amiguitos = New friends
Más comunistas malvados!!! = More evil comunists
Supuestos amiguitos = Supposed friends
Jaleo = ???
Canguros = Cangaroos
Estudio de cine = Film studio
Xena = ???

Kamina
March 12th, 2003, 06:35
hehe... xena = xena. It's a show that's filmed in new zealand. I gather it isn't aired in Brazil?

Ryos, I think I saw somewhere a study saying that by 2020 roughly 1 out of every 4 Americans will be hispanic.

Kazuya
March 12th, 2003, 08:09
I would change friends for little friends, and arena is sand.
And its: Osama Bin Laden (Well, maybe).

Napro
March 12th, 2003, 18:39
ok it still isint funny

(is it supposed to insult americans???)

what is with all the excelmation marks btw?

Kid A
March 12th, 2003, 19:29
Yeah it's supposed to insult americans and it is so funny to us because, as you will most assuredly know, nearly every non american person hates the USA. Sorry, it's nothing personal (at least not for me)

ShadowDancer
March 12th, 2003, 19:45
Arena = ? (just arena, maybe)

Arena means "sand". That's why they wrote that where Egypt is.

ok it still isint funny

(is it supposed to insult americans???)

:eyes:

This map is supposed to signify how Americans view the world....

Also, exclamation marks usually emphasize something, like a feeling or an idea....

Omegainf
March 13th, 2003, 01:20
Yeap, just like in English!!! :D

The funny thing is that it represents the way usa see the world almost perfectly, at least to non us people.

i dun really c how

zukeft
March 15th, 2003, 02:14
It's basically trying to say that American's don't really know much countries other then their own. It jokingly mocks how America sees the world, which is in a very limited way. Now that's not what I think, it's what can be interpreted from the map.

Strider
March 15th, 2003, 02:27
hmm, i think i saw that map over a year ago in english, was quite funny though

Well, in other countries we see Usa as a country that only looks for its own interests, convenience and power. I know they are not the only country, they just exagerate things.

Mexico, and yes, its a stereotype. If you see it like that its funny. The reality its another thing.
Hope you are not mad about it.

Var
March 18th, 2003, 09:28
Dont get so mad Napro, we admire your country in many things (such as technologies). But this world map shows our opinion about your country, so please think it over.

I am working for an US company.

Napro
March 18th, 2003, 17:19
im not mad i just didnt see how this could be funny?
(maybe the excelmation marks even at the beginning of words at the fact the its not in english, maybee)

whatever this'll be my last post in this topic

its more directed to the international crowd. its understandable if an american does not find it funny

Adair
March 19th, 2003, 00:21
I don't think its funny either. Not because I don't understand it though.
When you all are saying that its how Americans view the world you should be saying its how the American government views the world.
Yup that's right, I'm American and that map doesn't portray my view of the world at all. Furthermore I don't know a single person in America who has that kind of mentality.
So don't talk about Americans; talk about the American government.

Alot of people think that Americans are unfair in thinking that all middle eastern people are potential terrorists just because Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein are from the Middle East(again, I don't know a single person who actually thinks this way). But you all are doing the same thing when you judge Americans by the actions/beliefs of the American government.

I agree with Adair

I'm portuguese and I don't hate americans (I might sometimes don't like them), but most of portuguese like americans, you americans should "discover" more people and not limit yourselves to USA and those arabs contrys, to prove what I'm saing, take a look at Brazil (Brasil)

But what is the English word for “Xena”? ;)

The blindness of the Americans is shown most clearly by the arrow pointing to the place I grew up — the Bay Area. It’s labeled as “Hollywood”.

Oh — And here is the likely inspiration for the joke...

http://www.cs.kun.nl/~freek/pics/steinberg.jpg

It’s the cover of an old (1970s) New Yorker magazine, called “A View of the World from 9th Avenue”.

shadow_dreamer
March 24th, 2003, 06:55
What a great view.... Hmmmm... Somehow, I didn't understand it..

Kazuya
March 24th, 2003, 07:24
Xena? its related to the show xena warrior princess.

Snu
March 24th, 2003, 08:27
shadow_dreamer,

It’s making fun of the self-centered view of the New Yorker — Anything beyond the Hudson River is blurry and unimportant. The details of 9th Ave are clearly vital, but places like Canada or Russia show up at best as far off blobs.

shadow_dreamer
March 24th, 2003, 08:31
Hmm.. Let me take a look..

Oh i see... Now, I get it.. hehe..
