I heard lots of bad things about it, yet I have not a single clue pertain to what this treacherous program exactly is, and why does it induce such hatred.

And a program that spawns popups on thousands of sites around the world. Unlike the spank the monkey ads, the bonzai ape's still going strong. Grr. The program isn't quite as annoying as Xupiter though (spyware that tries to install itself automatically is so annoying :p).
