AFAIK SPU Eternal produces surround sound in the same way as the psx does.

i didn't even know that the psx even supported dolby digital... i thought that it only could support dobly surround

I've read that the surround signal is hidden in the stereo channel which can be done by software. FFIX for example has dolby surround.

Well, the PSX has some fake Dolby Surround support, not dolby digital.
As F-3582 said, you need to have a Dolby Surround system that calculates the the surround sound from the stereo signal of the PS1, that's what I mean by 'fake', a real dolby surround signal is given directly by the unit.
