It's FINALLY OUT!
Well it's not released officially here in my realm though... (yet)
But I saw the Latest Trailer at Reuters and CNN - It's AWESOME! Damn! Those Guys (the animators) are really a bunch of super NERD and GEEKS. I bet they had No life at all :fingers: eat software all days...
Anyway - judging the animation, i think Shrek has the same animation Quality with FF MOVIE (Shrek was Orc and princess thing - while FF was Human thing) - still FF MOVIE looks too real for an animation :p
But I cant wait to get my self a DVD of this movie

>i think Shrek has the same animation Quality with FF MOVIE
Though the CG in Shrek was quite good, comparing it to that of FF:SW is a bit shortsighted. While no attempts were made to have photo realistic characters in Shrek (and there was really no need to, after all, it's a fairy-tale, comic-type movie), its been Square's position all along that given the dramatic nature of the movie the characters must be as human like as possible. A short while ago (I'm not certain if it's still up) finalfantasy.com had a feature about how they needed to create a special piece of software just to have realistic *hair* so as to maintain the illusion of real people. So, as I said, trying to compare the CG of Shrek to FF is a rather incongruous argument.

July 10th, 2001, 14:12
Well,in fact if FF looks that realistic it's because the characters are real actors,Square is lying,it's not an animation movie.
Of course I don't have any proof and I don't believe what I said myself:D .

Rargh : Yes, i'm not a Fans of their games (although i played some - but never actually have full enjoy), i'm just giving some of my thoughts of the movie from a designer point of view, not as a gamer. - I Hate the Company
Cluthu, Raziel, and K : Offcourse, FF MOVIE cant be compared to Shrek. But As I said, The environment of Shrek (a true fantasy, orcs, talking donkey, and pigs) and FF MOVIE (real human situation) made you feel that FF MOVIE is more advance.
But anyway, if you asking what movie use the most advance 3d technology(today), I should say : A.I , FF MOVIE, Shrek, and Mummy Returns.
People have choices. - and so do I, a Squarehater  (anyone a squarehater too? join the club!)
Raziel : 1000+ post heh? and a 'real' Raziel avatar now ;)

404, I totally respect ur opinion.
I m just anxious about one thing w/ square;
The FF' s
They seem to represent the future tactical business method of that company:
Great graphics, and low stories. Perfect for the mass...
When i see games like xenogears made by the same company (BTW, this team is w/ namco now), I can just question myself why it s in a decadent way.
They ve got the money.
So why would they make more money?(ok it s very stupid and pretty off-topic) They can just do better games than the previous ones.
Remember the SNES time...
Nearly all the Square games were (and are) good.

Remember what I said about Square being Uncreative?
well, some you may found on FF MOVIE:
- Female main char. = why always long hair (although it's brown now) ? well atleast FF7, FF8 proves that.
- The environment = some takes ideas from FF8 and 7
- The Movie Poster design = Sid meier's Alpha Centauri (with fewer people - and no aliens) c'mon!
- The robots/foot soldiers = modified StormTroopers ;)
Ok, small review from me. I will find more Uncreative ideas - stay tuned!

You're right (well sort of). Today Games are more likely disappointing. They made games today only to show you that 'A' game has the best and beautiful graphics than others. They only want to maximum the ability of today's hardware. And forgetting other part that makes a game a real game. They want more and more money (well, arent we all?) from their games and forgetting the core of their games.
Past Games/Old games are still the best (ok, the graphics may sucked compared to what you've seen today) but if you're asking about real gameplay, hours of fun, and the gamers rejoice, nothing can beat the old skool games.
Imagine Super Mario Bros, FF1-6, DOOM, Duke Nukem 3D, ZeroType, etc....

Final Fantasy, the Movie: The Next Big Flop?
Although the new Final Fantasy movie has fantastic graphics and realistic animation, the enjoyment of the movie is unfortunately flawed by a thin plot, full of technobabble and oversimplified mysticism.
One thing which the movie can be proud of is the animation of the heroine, Aki Ross. With one-fifth of the movie's production time sunk into developing her hair alone, Aki is both lovely and amazingly realistic.
However, Aki cannot carry the whole movie alone. With so much care poured into her figure, some of her co-stars seemed poorly detailed by comparison. And although the atmosphere of the movie was excellent, the dialogue was stuffy and tedious.
They may look kind of cool, but the cast of “Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within” will never work in this town again. If this ill-conceived sci-fi adventure proves one thing, it’s that computer-created humans can be just as dull as real actors when cast adrift by a sluggish, featherbrained screenplay.
OR, just read the Full Review at MSNBC (http://www.msnbc.com/news/598569.asp?cp1=1)

The review says the other characters are poorly detailed...
Obviously this guy didn't even bother to watch the movie...
Aki Ross is the only character that doesn't look really human, in my opinion(even though she's really close). All the other characters are way more detailed and realistic than Aki Ross, which gives you an idea of how realistic they are. Wait until you see Dr. Sid in action and tell me if I am right ;)
I saw the movie on June 11th, North American release. The animations are ALL beautiful and incredibly well done. The plot is okay, nothing more and I gotta admit I didn't like the ending...
But overall, it's a must see.
And to those saying there was nothing related to the games: Where do you think 'gaia' and 'the wave' came from? There are plenty of elements related to the games.

I just saw the movie today. It just came out here today. It was great. One of the best movies I've seen in a while. It's more ment for kids and ff players not grownup who never played any games like most critics.

I just came back from watching the FF movie "spirits within"..... Suffice to say, I would rather play the game...... The cg animations was excellent but the story line and dialog are just too sciefi-ish..... Where is the fantasy? Mostly just alot of techno babble and FF7-ish storyline.... I think square spent too much time on the cg and left out a good, well thought out story to match the excellence of the animation..... Plus most people may not get the whole story line as it is.... They don't explain the story enough.... The ending also just left me thinking that Square could have come up with a better movie.... Atleast put some summons or magic into the movie!!!
animation 10
cg 10
story 4
dialog 6
ending 3
thats my review....... overall I would give this movie a 6
The only thing I really enjoyed was the preview of "Spiderman" coming out next summer.....

dunno if Square is bad....
but their last game I really liked was einhander, and that's not an RPG, heh. That has more to do with personal taste than with disliking a company though. I'm just not an RPG freak.
as for disliking companies...I'm not too happy with crapcom; once in a decade they release one good title and then for the next ten years they'll make the same game with slight differences over and over again. They did it with megaman, then with street fighter, and now they're doing the same with resident evil.
Of course SNK does that too with KOF, but with capcom it's more obvious somehow (can't really explain that)...
...and then you also have EA, with their yearly sports updates :P..but I like EA (well, especially EA Canada) for the NFS series :)
My favourite companies are Konami, Microprose (kinda dead though :(), Sega, Namco, EA Canada, Digital Illusions (DICE) and Codemasters. Perhaps I forgot a few. They just make good games.

Think of the third people there who just know the ff series (and liked it)
They are just going to see it cuz' it s the same name als the game.
It s the license power....
Like enigma said, I really enjoyed the first "mummy"
but the second one was just using the name of the first one for
business purpose..........

There ARE elements of the game in the movie.
The 'gaia' is the Lifestream, it's the exact same thing.
And the 'wave' is 'white'. Both elements are taken from FF7.
I know there are plenty others, just a little harder to find when watching this visually stunning movie.

Sorry YoD, too many RPG/Adventure/Fantasy Games (both PC and Console) using that words. And not to mentioned classic/modern Adventure/Fantasy-related Movies.
You cant make 'Gaia', 'the Wave', 'Elements', etc, somekind of trademark that Square invented for their games. You just Cant.
So there is no relationship between the movie and the game (on some part)

Final Fantasy is great and everything but, taking it into the future is a bad desicion in my eyes. I always knew Final Fantasy as a game in a world of magic, knights, queens, ect. not them going to space and having aliens eat their brains (I don't know if that actually happens :p ) Any Final Fantasy that gets any more science fictiony then FF8 is too far. BUT it is a little realistic...

Ahhh, just watched it (I got the VCD version also ;) ) and I have to say it's better then everyone keeps saying. The reason why everyone is saying the storyline is thin/not there is becuase we have been used to BIG emursive stories from the Final Fantasy name. I mean big 30+ hours of storyline. Just think if they tried to sqeeze a Final Fantasy game into 1:45. Thats the only problem, it's like Square made the story for a game but only gave us the ending of it. Maybe if we all saw how everything started we would be more happy. Plus the reveiw at MSNBC is full of it. The movie was more for people who played the games, not a bunch of people who think “I’m scanning the city for the seventh spirit.” is to "techno" for people to be able to understand.

Ok I know i havent seen the movie, but.......I think it sucks!!!!!!!!!
Why? well.......movie producers always screws with the games original story........it was better to make movies to games, not games to movies.......a lot of ppl i know said tomb raider the movie sucks.......and the upcoming Resident Evil movie is gonna suck too. There is no Claire, Leon, and no Umbrella. Also, there is no Magic, Wizards, and other stuff in FF:tSW.
Just an opinion.....

I saw FF today. Well I gotta say that the animation is really Really good, but...
1)They didn't pull off what I think would have been very possible to pull off. I'm talking about believable characters. I've seen some anime movies with characters that really suck you in. Not just because of the way the character was written, but also the way the voice actor read their lines in a believable way. Some of the dialog dialog in the movie is interesting, but for the most part the dialog is either corny, badly written/acted, or just hard to follow(ie:techno babble). So Square really needed to spend more time on the story and get better voice actors.
2)I don't know what they were thinking when they made the soundtrack to this movie. There are parts where the music fits in well, such as in the dreams and some action scenes, but then there are parts that made me stop thinking about what's going on in the movie to wonder why would they choose this music for this scene? For instance near the beginning you see a spaceship calmly drifting in space, but the music being played makes it seem overly dramatic. Personally I don't find a slowly moving spaceship to be very exciting. Square uses this overly dramatic music way too often. You hear it nearly everytime there's a rescue from even the weakest threats.
Well I'm not saying I had a terrible time. It was entertaining, but was also seriously flawed IMHO.
BTW I have one more thing to add to this, but if you don't want to read a SPOILER then skip the rest of this post.
3)This is maybe the biggest inconsistency that I saw in the movie, but it didn't necessarily have to be if they had just explained it better...Why do guns hurt the ghost aliens? The aliens can move through solid objects, yet somehow bullets kill them. The movie didn't mention anything about the guns being a specially designed weapon. They seemed to just be standard issue guns. Also a ghost is already dead so how do you kill one?
4)One more thing. Where are all the human ghosts?

To address everyones concerns yet again. I have more info for the Final Fantasy Movie. First off, UMEPSXE, you know how the Final Fantasy games always have different characters/storylines in every game, it's the same with the Final Fantasy Movie. Also, I got the august issue of OPM (Official PS Magaizine) and it had some interesting info and an interveiw with Hironobu Sakaguchi. Here is a little snippit from the pages in OPM.
- "Holloywood insiders also worry about one other aspect of this extreme realism: a phenomenon known to robotic researchers as "the uncanny valley" effect. Essentially, this isthe point at which a robot is so close to lifelike that people begin to focus on picking out any slight imperfections. Theres a fear that veiwers of The Spirits Within will become fixated on any unnatural motions or geustures of the characters instead of paying attention to the movie itself." - Strange 'eh? Another thing I wondered besides how their weapons could kill the spirits was, when did they figure out how to make those cool holographics devices you could interact with? And another thing was, how could the spirits infect living things? Hmm.... strange. Hironobu also pointed out that if you looked closely you could catch a glimpse of the classic chocobo on Aki's T-shirt in one scene or on somebodys suitcase, or on a wall.
PS - Did anyone else see the cool looking watch based on Aki's holographic tracking device? It looks REALLY COOL, but I would rather get a GC with 200$. Sheesh, it's just a watch!!!!
