I'll vote when nearly all of those are replaced with some quality square titles...
Vagrant Story? Legend of Mana? C'mon, have some taste.

April 20th, 2001, 08:46
Well... those where first ones that popped to my mind...
The Legend Of mana 2 (seiken dendetsu 3) was awesome on
SNES but on PSX... it's embarassing...
How many square games there are out anyway?
I've played most of them (i think)
I'll make new poll then...

There's WAYYYYYYYY to many. Most of which are good

seiken dnesetsu 3 was an entirely different game. it was the sequel to secret of mana, and only released in japan. both were on the snes. legend of mana came afterwards, on the psx. at least thats how i understand it..

April 20th, 2001, 17:45
That's correct.
And Seiken Densetu 3 (probably spelled wrong) was an superb game, Legend of Mana was not.

SEIKEN DENSETSU
that, i believe is the most correct spelling..
very involved, multiple storylines and lots of possibilities

I'm not voting since there is no Chrono Trigger-the most known and the best RPG that was ever created. FF6 is a far second, though.

Quick notes about the Seiken Densetsu ("Legend of the Holy Sword") series:
Seiken Densetsu 1 = Final Fantasy Adventure (Gameboy)
Seiken Densetsu 2 = Secret of Mana (SNES)
Seiken Densetsu 3 = Unrealeased in english, available only throught emulators (SNES)
Seiken Densetsu 4 = Legend of Mana (PSX)
I think they're all great, although Seiken 3 is the best one.

Um, Badaro, I don't mean to be rude or insulting, but Seiken Densetsu 3 is available on the real SNES as a cartridge. Also, here's how I would rank the Seiken Densetsu series: Seiken Densetsu 3, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy Adventure (odd name, it isn't even part of the FF series), Legend of Mana. IMO, Square's games just get worse. They haven't released a quality game in 2 years.

LanGaidin, I think you're right, even though people seem to like their first <b>two</b> RPGs, not just their first one. Also, people seem to like it in that order too, for example they like the first RPG they played the most, then they like the second RPG they played the second most (is there a term such as second most?). The first RPG I ever played was Chrono Trigger, followed by FF3 (I played the american version).

Hey buut seriously that game probably only took me half the time it took to beat FF7 or FF9...like 13 hours or something... A RPG that short kills the fun out of it... but then again ff9 sorta sucked because the cardgame was pointless there weren't any megaelixers...
Nothing Square will ever do will ever compare to Xenogears. It was simply perfect. Decent difficulty, plot, music, big mecha, it was all there.

For true Square RPG IMHO FF3 or Chrono Trigger. PSX? Maybe Xenogears or Final Fantasy 7 for the pure jump from FF3/6. Why has no-one mentioned the Original Parasite Eve - A bloody brilliant game. (For UK posters - Parasite Eve? Its like BRILLIANT ennit.?- A new Fast Show Sketch?) In fact I think PE gets my vote. :wtf: :smash:

I don't know how old this topic is, but im puttin another post in,
to get it out of the way my favorite square game is by far and away, Final Fantasy Tactics. (if ur the type of rpg fan that likes a involving plot and literally TONS OF ROOM TO SPEND LVLING, this is your game) the only slight flaw is the reallly, REALLY bad translation of some parts, and confusing storyline. Close second is probably FF4 or 5, but probably 5, do I like the job system? yes =) both 4 and 5 allow alot of room to spend lvling and still have a challange (4 is lesser on this) I like other novelty square games that are fun, yet are easy, and probably only saving themselves through story and fun gameplay (but as I mentioned, a complete lack of challange) these games are titles like Seiken Densetsu 3, and Chrono Trigger (sorry, its too damn easy tho), and some of the ff games *most notably 6, 7 and 9*
CDburnout says Vagrant Story is trash?!?! =) do you REALLY own this game???
ff9 IMO was the best ff since 5, but I can understand why anyone would try dispute me, but comon, Vagrant Story was GOOD =)
(and yes, I know I said 9 is the best ff since 5 yet its "easy", it just happens to be DAMN GOOD also, 9 also combines the best of 4, 5, and 6 *and to lesser extents, 7* *they always state that it draws from all the FF games, but this is just wrong IMO*
Parasite Eve was good I guess, but I don't go for the resident evil-ish games, they're kinda like the tomb raider-ish games, so damn similar (altho I do like Soul Reaver alot). I haven't played the 2nd one but I just barely beat the first one with my crappy mod weapon - then I died trying to esacape the boat, how frustrating! (beat it on a rental too, kinda SHORT) - Vagrant story is too tho, but longer IMO atleast =)
About Xenogears now, the difficulty was only in the Mech battles, and this was because you were limited on what you could have (not much variety at all) the Story was A+ IMO, but the gameplay was at best a C- (the character battles redeem it a bit since you have to spend time lvling without techs to learn new ones). Most of my mech battles in XG basically went <turbo or non *depending on boss*> <single attack> <combo attack> <single attack> <combo attack>, only when you can finally get the rage mode (I forgot what its called, but it lets you do combos for like 2-3 consecutive turns) do you finally start to add more strategy to the battle, and this is much later in the game. Truely a great game, just I wouldn't overrate its battle system.
yep, ff8 blows, atleast it has challange tho, unlike 7, you'd think I'd like it since its almost all about spending ****loads of time collecting spells and lvling junctions, I just don't like it, but if I stated why it'd make the post 10x longer =)
I think im gonna get alot of flames about callin CT a novelty title, but comon, was the game challanging?
thats my the end of my highly opinionated and biased post =)

OK, here is my opinion about Vagrant Story.
DISCLAIMER - This is my personal opinion about this game. You may disagree, and you have every right to do so. We can even talk about it if you want, through private messages or whatever, but please, keep it flame-free. I really can't stress this enough.
OK, the first thing that should be mentioned is that the StC (Start to Crate) (http://www.oldmanmurray.com/features/crates/crates1.shtml) time for Vagrant Story is a mere 45 seconds, all 45 being load time. This went from unfortunate to downright appalling when I found out I was expected to actually stack the crates. I was allowed to vent out my frustration by breaking one crate with my sword, but mostly I was just simply supposed to pick them up and pile them someplace else. The crate puzzles center mainly around stacking the necessary number of crates on top of each other so the hero can get up someplace. Yes, what a fantastic idea of fun! The next indignity came when I had to track down and fight a nasty boss all for a key. Just for a single key.
After I was done scientifically calculating the StC time, I went back to watch the opening cinemas so I could find out what the hell was supposed to be going on. When I got back to the starting crate, I still had no idea. Apparently there are about countless different groups of people (the Valendia Knights, the Mullenkamp Sect, the Parliament, the Blades, the Mafia, the CIA, the KGB, the phone company, KFC, AOL, M$, etc...) fighting over some town or manor or something called Lea Monde. The bad guy named Sydney is the leader of some evil religion, and I know it's evil because he doesn't mention Jesus even once.
They're all out of luck though, because the place has already been taken over by the SoCM (Society of Clichéd Monsters), starting with dragons, bats and dogs, then moving on to skeletons and gelatinous blobs, and just when I thought the game had used up its supply of stock enemies, here came the lizardmen, and I was back in a world of lizard hurting. True, it's a world I've been to a hundred different times in a hundred different games, but hey, who the hell needs innovation anyway?
This game, the first wretched spawn of Final Fantasy 8's interface, is created by people from the anal retentive school of RPGing. Not only do you get to micromanage every aspect of your weapons and armor, but the damn things actually change the more you use them. I remember the good old days when a sword made of ice would beat a creature that was made of fire, and shooting a fish with lightning would kill it faster than just hacking at it. Now I have to worry about the weapon's affinity, and since different weapons have largely different effects on different enemies, I can only assume Square wants me to re-equip every time I fight a new enemy. If they seriously think I'm going to do that then they're as crazy as the critics who gave this PoS 9's and 10's. Fortunately it doesn't really matter if you have the right weapon or not because Ashley Riot hits like a girl. Nothing makes me feel more inadequate than managing to pull off a three hit combo that takes a devastating 8 HP from my opponent. Politely asking the monster to run into a wall would cause more damage. You know, I don't play these games to be reminded that I'm barely strong enough to lift my Playstation controller.
The battle system lets you run around like a sissy, but when the time comes to actually maybe hurt somebody, you have to turn it over to the menus. Vagrant Story covers new ground in anal retentiveness that even Final Fantasy 8 hadn't dared by letting you decide which region of the enemy's body to miss completely (and trust me, you'll miss quite often). For extra fun and detail the game includes a risk meter, which apparently measures how drunk off his ass your character is. Once the risk number gets high he can't hit the broad side of a behemoth (and even if he did, it probably wouldn't do any damage anyway).
Since I hated the fighting so much, I spent a lot of time going through my inventory. While flipping through the large collection of shoes Ashley was carrying around, I found that they too had individual classes and affinities. By this point my mind had snapped and my only question was, "why didn't they go further?"; "What about traction?"; "And what about sproingability?" If you're pushing crates around, you don't really give a rat's ass if your shoes can withstand a Harsh Wind Spell. You just don't want to be sliding all over the goddamn place like an ice skater. Not to mention the fact that after you actually manage to stack all those crates, you'll have to leap like a rabbit on crystal meth from the top of a crate to the other.
And then there's the gorgeous weapon system. It's set up so that your weapon gets more powerful the more you use it, and when you get a new weapon it's a complete PoS. So what happens is you keep your old weapon that you already have some experience with and just leave all the new weapons you find in your backpack or your ass, wherever you're keeping them. This system seems to be taken directly from Secret of Evermore, which was developed by Square of America. When the real Square developers start ripping off the team that was started as a cruel Japanese joke, we're surely doomed.
The presentation kinda reminded me of MGS, which is a good thing, maybe the best thing, but it only goes as far as the visuals. Square continues to avoid voice acting with the same idiotic stubbornness that Nintendo avoided CDs with. The fact that the characters can move their mouths only accentuates the fact that absolutely nothing is coming out. The result is a mime show with word balloons. Great presentation, but not a goddamn thing to present.
Oh, and many thanks to anyone who read the entire post. You deserve it. ;)

well, like I said, I liked legacy of kain, and that has a painful amount of block puzzles too (but Tomb Raider probably takes the cake for really annoying block puzzles) I don't like block puzzles all that much, but I bear with them to get through the game, and for games like legacy of kain (which has a damn cool plot) and even Vagrant Story (which you gotta expect it to be a little confusing coming from the same guy who did FFT) All rpgs with tons of gameplay to them are "anal retentive", I just call it being "complete", rpgs have never been realistic on everything, if your boots have fire resistance, its just something your lucky to have, you don't sit there and go "well how to boots protect my WHOLE body from fire?!?!" If you ask me FF8 was even more "complete", but more in the ****ed up way, as they had a good idea, but implemented it poorly.
The weapon system is once again, completist style, to really master the game you have to spend the time lvling all your weapons, its designed so you can't simply blaze through every monster in the game with the best weapon for each one. Parasite Eve had the weapon mod system, and all you had to do with it if I recall right was make sure you found some good guns along your way throught the game. Also if I recall right SoE's style was ripped from Seiken Densetsu's anyhow, and isn't really too revolutionary to say that a game like it, is actually ripping it from that game.
The whole StC thing is silly, its old man murray, wtf did you expect, they even list a few good games like deus ex, doom, and such. Not to mention 90% of the gmes listed don't have any importance to the crates, they're just there as level filler (which could be called cheap and uninventive, but it doesn't make the game game bad) Half Life must have 10 billion crates throughout the game, and your going to call it bad? Lets just say Vagrant Story isn't for your average "beat an rpg in a day" type player, and that CT lovers should avoid it at all costs.

I think one of the MOST UNcreative Game Developer/Company on the planet would be Squaresoft.
Specially the divison who designed Final fantasy series...
From one series 2 another (IF we think on a Clear and open Mind - bet you all agree  ) - Poor Battle system improvement, even more Poor in Character design (cmon, a boy + a monkey = Zidane : and I though Zidane was a French Football Player : and He has NO HAIR at all) - leave Boy + Monkey concept to DragonBall/Sun Go Kong.
FF character mix = Bouncer Character? - please! and LOTS of other thing. Be Creative!
cmon! Pay me 1 Million Pound and I'll redesign the whole Final Fantasy Series :p add another 7 Million, I'll bring Square to a whole new Genre (just kidding)
PS: I Afraid to think that my or even Your GrandChildren would survive with Final Fantasy 30 ... :eyes: - STOP this already! :D

The Squaresoft games I liked most are:
FF3 - Classic FF. Very old-school. Good job system
FF4 - Great story and characters. Fixed character classes
FF5 - Classic FF, much like FF3. Love the job system!
FF6 - Awesome story, interesting chracters and abilities. A bit unbalanced in the end(Kefka was the easiest boss I've ever fought)
FF7 - The first time I saw this game it blew me away. I like the style of graphics and the materia system, as well as the summons
FF Tactics - Neat battle system, intriguing story, great soundtrack
Chrono Trigger - Superb graphics, great soundtrack, unique characters, interesting story, great scripting! One of the greatest RPGs ever made!
Parasite Eve - A bit too short for an RPG, but a unique battle system and cool cinemas. Crysler building was a very nice feature
Seiken Densetsu 3 - Interesting 3-way story, great replay value, unique characters and classes
The Squaresoft games I disliked are:
FF2 - Awful system. Blah!
FF8 - Horribly unbalanced(infinite limit breaks) and boring system. Overly dependent on GFs and junctioning. WAY too easy
FF9 - Too short and not enough character development. Story wasn't deep enough, especially about the crystal. A bit too easy
Legend of Mana - What kind of a follow-up is this to SD3? Man, SQ's losing it!
Chrono Cross - Awful battle system(I mean you can only use each element once in a battle), WAAAAAY too many useless characters, rushed ending
Squaresoft games I'm neutral about:
Xenogears - Haven't gotten much into it. Looks to be really good though
FF1 - Haven't finished it. I don't hate it, but I don't particularly like it either.
Vagrant Story - Not particularly fond of it, but haven't played enough of it to tell
FF1-3 on gameboy - Haven't played them
Seiken Densetsu 1 - Haven't played it
Secret of Mana - Haven't played much of it
Parasite Eve 2 - Haven't played much of it
Feel free to disagree with me on any of the above games. It's just my personal preference and experiences with the games. BTW, really looking forward to FF X.

Watch your mouth kid, I'm just trying to save you some trouble. Seriously, I'm doing you a favor. That was not a threat...
1. If you want something, instead of reviving a 6 year old thread that no one cares about to ask a question (especially for illegal material) is not a good idea because a moderator would close this right away... It's better to start a new thread and maybe it won't get closed.
2. If you want to download psx isos, I wouldn't ask here. It's against the rules, and if you wish to continue posting here, I suggest you read them and follow them accordinly or else you will find yourself with a big fat ban...
3. Asking for pirated material and making flames on your first 3 posts is a great way to gain respect  Second, I highly doubt you could kick my ass. Threatening words like those don't mean s-h-i-t behind a monitor...
In closing, follow the rules, take my advice, or get kicked out of here.
