Hi everyone!
There is new info on the icarus site forum. Cyrus64 recommends a 10ghz!!! processor for perfect emulation of the dreamcast:confused:
Check it out for yourselves

It has to be a joke ;)

The project isn't dead. I've been busy with real-life/girlfriend over the summer, but its still v.active. Its just there is no point making a release at this time, since there would be far too many complains about 'game x doesnt run' etc
The dreamcast is really rather complex, and speed is going to be an absolute killer (probably 10ghz for proper software emulation of the tile-based rendering).
We have output from a v.few games and homebrew is showing much promise in the sense that a lot of it 'displays' but nothing is satisfactorily stable at the moment such as the rendering and there is still an fpu bug that needs fixing. If I find that, then perhaps I'll show some improved pics of Snow Surfers, and if VQ-compression gets fixed, perhaps one or two of unreal tournament ;p (but all very messed up and very slow)
Regards,
CyRUS
Not perfect emulation, just proper software emulation. So who knows what this means for the end product. But I wouldn't worry about it for at least 6 months.

That number will probably get smaller in a while, if work is resumed on the emu. Theres probably a lot of optimizing to be done.

You would only need around about a 1000-2000mhz with about 256 meg of ram and a GeForce 4 ti 4700 128 meg graphics card

Has anyone seen the new screens at icarus site.
Cyrus said there people working on ogl plugins for icarus and now we´re seeing the results. Great work.;)

What is GF4Ti4700 ???
Here is new info about Icarus hardware req.:
Posted by Gorxon on IcarusFAQ
.... Currently with an interpreter core Crazy Taxi is running at 4-5 frames per second in-game on my Pentium III 850mhz machine. Thus you'd need a 8ghz spec machine to run this full speed.
On the other hand a game such as Headhunter in training mode seems to be running at a relatively smooth 15fps, implying only the need for a 3ghz machine.
In essence until a strong dynamic recompiler is written for the CPU then you won't be playing these games at full speed, and even then you'll need 2ghz+.
...
So ... ?? 2G CPU isn`t so big req. 4 smooth play with good fps!!!

i applaud their hard work. :)

yeah, me too... I always wanted the DC emulator to push through, it has been a long time now since they started it...
but base on that fact, you really need a very powerful system for it to run on the typical fps like DC... ouch

Hey guys, I think you're forgetting that you won't be able to play DC games on Icarus unless you have a broadband unit. You should be more concerned about having to download the game through the 56k modem than getting to play the games perfectly. Just a thought.

ah, shoot! that makes me even sad :(
first, the PC spec, now the connection

The biggest problem will be
Roms couse if I know there is now
way to read DC Discs on standard
CD/DVD Drive :(
...:(

another disappointing fact... ow well... hope things go fro the better for DC emulation... good luck to the programmers...

huh i thought that it needs a GD rom to read?

it does. but you can use images too (well, i'm sure support for running them will be developed soon); or if you have a DC, you can use the broadband unit to transfer data to your PC (as someone already mentioned). and of course there are the almighty warez d00dz with their CD rips :P

there is ample support already for running images/cdrs but its a matter of choice for whether the released product will support them...

good luck CyRUS64 on your future development on Icarus... hope you'll get to make it at full throttle by next year... have a pleasant christmas till then...

requirements would be tough...

November 30th, 2002, 16:22
well you said it... but by that time, PC have higher specs compare to present so when it reach 3Ghz, DC maybe fully operational by then... but we all hope that there would be an earlier release ;)
again, good luck to the improvements and development of Icarus...

I`ve got one question that noone haven`t asked yet, but I think that is very important!!!
Will we have 2 pay 4 using Icarus or
it will be freeware program???

I think it will be a freeware just like any emulator out there... I think there won't be anyone following Bleems footstep that cause their downfall...

Whatever. Keep up the good work, cyrus.

I am sure it will be a freeware.
Hmm,
In recent times icarus is making some good progress.
Good luck cyrus.

YEah the screens are very impressive and I'm really impressed that there are ppl that put so much effort into this and not to mention they don't get a penny out of it :(.

Woah, great work guys. Really good.
So does this mean that the only hurdle left in DC emulation is the lack of a system that can handle it?
CyRUS64
January 13th, 2003, 15:09
Yes... with a good dynarec, code optimization, and some optional hle that should be improved too. Of course there is currently no audible sound and memcards and such arent fully operational yet.

January 14th, 2003, 21:47
Well, some russian developers claim that HLE on DC can be very successfull. One russian guy already developed emulator with almost full 2D support and nice SH-4 core running some 2D demos. More info to follow.
CyRUS64
January 15th, 2003, 19:29
Well hle could be very successfull but lle is true emulation and provides good compatibility. Hle is generally a hack ;)
