my cdrom drive was reading cds pretty slowly so i thought by reinstalling the drivers i could make it read cds faster. but now drive e:(cd drive) runs in msdos compatibility mode any slows down the machine, my system also hangs whenever i click on my computer, windows explorer, etc. how do i remove the msdos compatibility mode and how to make my cd drive run faster.

What kind of drivrer did you install? if you used a driver in your config.sys (called a real mode driver), thats what is causing your drive to run in compatibility mode. In win98, for the slow performance, check a couple things....goto the device manager and go under your cdrom properties. Make sure that DMA is checked. Also if you go to system and pick the performance tab you will see a button for "File System." click on that and then goto the cdrom tab. Make sure the "supplemental Cache size" is set to large and that "optimize access pattern for" is set to quadspeed or higher. What OS are you using and what is the make and the model of your CD drive?
