View Full Version : Ridge Racer 4 Question

Maybe not an emulator question so much as a game question.. Recently got this disc from a friend while he was cleaning out storage. No PSX tho, it apparently didn't survive his kids (!!). Anyways, trying it on ePSXe and it seems to run, but it's just.. slow. If I do a time attack (single car) race, it seems ok, but any Grand Prix race where there's alot of cars, it slows down alot at random times. Odd thing is the FPS indicator hardly budges, so even in alot of slowdown, it still says 59.9fps.
Is this game just slow? I tried Pete's OpenGL 1.64, as well as PEOPS, and both produce similar results in mild or higher resolutions. My friend ISO-ified the game, and the ISO runs fine but still has the slowdowns.
*edit* - yeah, yeah, no specs. My first concern is finding out if it's just a game thing, or if more research is needed. If someone says "oh the game runs super fast on a PSX" then I can take it from there. Otherwise I won't paste a screen full of specs if they aren't needed. Dig? 8)
OK-OK

The cars are fst but the game is pretty slow for me so.. take a guess.

In Pete's plugin, use "PC fps calculation" special game fix,it will make the game run at the right speed ;).

yes, allthough it will mess up the music speed...
besides, newer versions of epsxe shouldnt have this problem.

I did try the PC fps calc function after I saw the suggestion. My fps plummets to about 20fps or so and spikes to around 60, but that certainly didn't fix it.
My CPU speed shouldn't be a factor. I use a P4 1.7Ghz, 512MB RDRAM, GF4 Ti4200 64MB.. Not exactly sluggish. The way it's acting, it's like the emulator is trying too hard to run the game exactly like it thinks it should run, including slowing down at these odd times. I tried changing the sound, thinking that might be it, but the default plugin has the same result.
I'll keep messing with it.

Does it only slow down in RR or other games as well?

The only other racing game I have on that level is Gran Tourismo, which seems to run really well, with smooth consistant speed. I have other games like Final Fantasy7 and Tekken3 which run just fine.

Now that's strange, cause when using PC fps calculation the max fps is 30.
60 cannot be reached(unless you disable frame limiting).
Make sure you've set fps limit to autodetect.

you might want to clean up the registry settings from epsxe...allthough that could mean you have to reconfigure everything. Anyways, since epsxe 1.5.1 the slowdown I had in R4 seems to be gone, so I think it's odd you still have it....

My FPS is set to autodetect. When I say "spikes" I mean it bounces all over, normally in the 20's but it jumps around so much it is like 23, 65, 19, 28.. it really never stands still. So I don't use that PC fps compensation thingy.
I'll try the registry flush, but 1.52 is the first version I've used and I haven't had to fool with the settings much. So my install is pretty basic.
