View Full Version : Speeding up FF8

Hello. I was wondering if there was a way to speed up FF8. I am running 1.52 with Pete's OpenGL 1.62 and Eternal SPU Plugin 1.20. The problem is the World > Battle transition screens take a while to finish. Like in FF9 where you can disable the drawing transition, can that be done in FF8?
***Is there a better emulator to use, besides VGS?
Thanks.

I'm going to add this as an edit, too. There is a little problem with the sound - it only occurs during FMVs. When an FMV begins, the sound becomes out of sync - notes/music plays at the wrong time like bits and pieces of the music are not in order. It's not really a priority, but it would be nice if this problem could be solved.

there is no way to do it , no emulator can speed up at that part and its a problem thats needs fixing.

1-use the last version of the spu plugin (1.30) and gpu (1.63)
2-set Framebuffer textures to black and Framebuffer Access to emulated Vram
3-try a lower resolution

Actually, on my system with my voodoo 5 + lewpys glide pluggin, that part goes 60fps.. full speed.. Weird but geforce cards, even my geforce4ti 4600, can't do 4xFSAA+framebuffer hardware effects full speed, but my voodoo 5 can.. :)
BTW.. I think RAziel stated it many times.. The battle transitions in FF8 aren't framebuffer related.. So lower your resolution and set off screen drawing lower.. And turn off fSAA if your using it..

I am running on an ISO but there are many battles and it gets annoying when you have to wait so long to start battling.
I'll try updating the plugins 3x3cUt0r said to.
Also, my off screen drawing is at 2 and framebuffer is at 1. So...here are the settings:

how come you are still using Pete's OpenGL 1.62 if you already updated your plugins?? It should be 1.63.

Also is there a way to SLOW DOWN FF8? I was in the fire cavern at the beginning of the game and when I used scan on a monster I saw my time ticking away 10x while I was trying to read the info!!! Should I put on an FPS limit or so? Thanks.

LOL,yes of course, use FPS limit, and set it to autodetect ;).

I see the problem about your slow down ;) you are using a TNT graphic's card, switch to D3D, it is MUCH faster at rendering the transitions for this card.
as for the speed problem, make sure you don't have PC FPS calculation checked, and that frame limiter is checked. Finally disable pallatized windows option...the TNT doesn't support pallatized textures, which is another area for possible slowdowns.

You could have a look at the website in my sig, which tells you what options are needed for ff8, and what the options do......
