View Full Version : How to speed up FF7 when you enter a battle?

Hi, whenever I enter any battle it takes about 30 seconds until the screen loads. The game pauses entirely for that duration of time and you can hear music playing VERY VERY slowly. Other RPG games like FF Tactics & BoF 3 have NO slowdown when I go into a battle, why does FF7 screwup? I have a very capable system (at least to run this game) as you can see, so I'm very confident it's just a matter of settings -
I have :
-Intel 1.5 GHZ processor speed
-128 Megs RDRAM
-ATI Radeon DDR video card
-Sound Blaster AWE 64 sound card
Using :
-Pete's OpenGL video plugin - 1.52
-ePSXe SPU core 1.5.2 sound plugin
Any suggestions?
Thanks,

loadtime´s are heavy when entering a battle on RPG games, have you tried playing using an ISO?

it could depend on wat your video settings are set at, or like Fr0g said, it could be your cd rom drive just having mad trouble reading the cd. Try making an ISO, or try setting the speed of your cd-rom drive to 2x or 4x... it should help it more correctly emulate the playstation (use pete's cdr plugin).

It could also be a combination of both the swirl effects and the cd rom loading.. Like the others said, run from an iso and disable the effect by setting framebuffer to "black" and disabling FVP is you have it on..

i had the same problem with FF8. i just dealt with it. then when i played it with a soft driver, it went pretty fast, but the graphics were garbage.

Set frame buffer to 1 and it should solve the problem. The downside here is it will cause the swirls to be completely black, but the upside is battles will be almost instantly. I personally actually prefer this black transition myself, I can't stand the swirls, on the PSX or EPSXE.

as mentioned, set the framebuffer to "black" and play the game off an iso. Also, you might wanna update your Pete's plugin to the latest version which is 1.62.

It's something related to the PSX frame buffer and how it's emulated on a PC. Most Square games abuse this feature, including FF7 and FF8. Try to use the Search function, as this topic has been discussed a lot of times already. You should be able to get a lot of insights from the search. :)

OR try setting the frame rate faster:)

And to think that the swirls work perfectly on a real Playstation..... I might pick up a PSone. After struggling with the battle transitions in FF8 I have decided that emulation is not as good as I thought it was. I mean, I already buy my games why not buy the real system?

hmm...this thread was begun back in june, and still being answered over a month later :p why?
anyways (at the time I'm writing this) the most current plugin is pete's 1.64. The Framebuffer options were expanded in this version to include a new "Gfx buffer+ Software" (you might want to set it to this option with framebuffer access set to emulated)

I was. But have decided to get a real playstation. The games run sooooooooo much better! No glitches, slowdowns or other problems!:D Plus you can get original Playstations for real cheap now.
