View Full Version : Your favourite game controller

so, just wondering what you like to play your games with; because I have a DC for a while now, and I really like it, but there are certain games I dont play a lot due to the controls.
I mean...I like racing games....a lot! ....but they're not that nice with the DC controller. I prefer a keyboard, and I even like playing GT2 or R4 on ePSXe with my PC joypad better. ...and nothing beats a keyboard. I've been using that since the MSX and it's still my preferred controller for most games, allthough there are genres in which I like a PAD better: especially most fighting games and certain platform games.
....so, I'll probably get Crazy Taxi for the PC when it comes out since then I'll finally be able to play it the way I want ;)
Also, Beatmania...there's this special controller for it for psx but how on earth is that playable with a PAD...same goes for lightgun games; a mouse (and a lightgun of course) is suitable for that, but a controller? Allthough Silent Scope actually DOES play well with a pad, but then again that game is quite different from most shooting games.
oh, and for some reason I cant really get used to my pc steering wheel either, even though it's cool and more "realistic" (relatively, it's not REALLY ralistic).
One more, Pinball: pinball on a pad? yuck..gimme shift keys, and no, I dont see a point in custom pinball controllers for pc, it's not much different.

anyways, what do you prefer? What do you think is THE type of controller?

I think a Gamepad works for almost anything. The only real exceptions are flight sims and fps games. The gamepad is the best for almost everything else.

It depends on the game...
FPS and RTS are best with mouse and keyboard, while most other games are better with a decent gamepad.

sure, it depends on the game...but what's your favourite overall?

in my case it's the keyboard....of course that doesnt mean that I dont use a mouse with a FPS ;)

It's really hard to tell...
On the PC I mainly use keyboard and mouse, but that's due to the fact that I have mainly FPS and RTS titles there.
I also use a DualShock on the PC now, primarily for PSX emulation, but I might use it for some games in the future where I used the keyboard before (e.g. Grim Fandango would be a good candidat).

But I also have DC, GC, and PS2, so I surely use the controllers there (but on the DC I have an arcade stick for fighters and a steering wheel for racers).
Even here I couldn't decide which is the best controller, since all have their advantages and disadvantages...
The DualShock is a bit small for my taste, and the sticks aren't place ideally, but it has the most buttons. For some reason I'm not fast enough with the pad to play VF4 as it should be, so I probably need an arcade stick for the PS2...
The DC pad has a well-placed stick, but it's surface is crap and the D-pad isn't very precise.
The GC pad has a very good comfort, but the D-pad isn't good, the Z-button isn't ideally placed, and I assume it will be very bad for fighters, ie. I need an arcade stick again...

The GameCube D-Pad is awesome for SSX TRicky. I don't know about tournament fighters though.

well, admitted, I absolutely love the DC pad for capcom vs snk. But I'm not to fond off the analog controller thats used in the mayority of 3D games...I think it's too small , so you hardly notice it being analog. And I dont like that nearly all racing games use the L and R button for accelerate and brake..bleh. The pad works great with Sonic though. I like my PC pad's d-pad slightly less than the DC one, but it's better with racers (allthough I prefer keyboard). It has analog controllers but I hardly ever use them though; I have a cheap joystick which I use when playing flight sims (which is not too often; and crimson skies is not really a flightsim ;)). ..but I play Ace Combat with the joypad, using the d-pad...yeah, weird, I know :). For nearly every pc racing game, MSX emulators, Pinball games and Beatmania I use the keyboard. In the case of platformgames it depends on the game (I play megaman X with pad for example, that game is simply not suitable for a keyboard).
In case of the emulators; I usually use more than one emu, and often one of them is set to pad and the other to keyboard. Games like Gradius (shmups): In epsxe I have often mapped them to the pad but usually I play a lot better when I switch to keyboard.
Probably the best example: Last year I played (and finished) Snatcher, Sega CD, on gens. I used the pad all the time but couldnt get past the last battle (which involves shooting loads of snatchers that appear on the screen very quickly). Then I switched to keyboard and passed it after the second try. I can simply move much faster and more accurate with a keyboard. The only reason I dont use it with street fighter is that it's too hard to pull super moves when you're facing left. When facing right I'm actually better than with pad.

I used to have that one (well, still have, but not using it anymore)....it's good, but not for fighting games. It worked really well in megaman x, but in certain other platform games it didnt (I constant fell off ladders in mario games). Allthough apparantly there are certain versions of this pad that have better dpads than others.

The D-pad works fine for me. I don't have any probs with it or I wouldn't be using it anymore.

Gamepad all the way. However, the d-pad can go the other way if you don't press it carefully

The one, the only, the orignal PSX Dual Shock controller made by Sony for the PSX (and my PC) and hooked up to USB w/a KIKI joy cable that delivers good strong rumble in ePSXe. I use the PSX controller w/all, and I DO mean all, my emulators and PC games.
For me, it is the only way to go.
sincerely,

...I've always been a "keyboard-only" man :) ...all those special/super moves on beat'em ups are just SO easy this way ;) ...and when it comes to other game genres... its even easier !!!

a good gamepad or a mouse+keyboard combo.. those are my preferences .. one works better than the other depending on the game.. :)

I dont understand you, Ryos :p
I prefer the Joypad, but I'd change my mind if they start making pressure sensitive keyboards. Some games could really make use of it ( GTA , racing games... )

For me it depends on the game. If I'm playing FPS games, I prefer the keyboard mouse combo. For almoste everything else I use a gamepad. My favorites are the original MS sidewinder, and the psx dual shock.

I agree with sxamiga. PSX pad all the way! But I use a different USB adapter. It's weird because with doesn't have 'true' rumble. It connects to my sound card as well as my USB port and it gets the rumble from my soundcard. So that means I truely get rumble for EVERYTHING, even from Winamp. But one downfall for this adapter, only the vertical axis on the right stick works. But that doesn't matter since don't use it anyways. :)

As some said, it's hard to say.
But after a lot of consideration, I gave it to the flightstick.

Keyboard is very accurate and somewhat comfortable, but admit it, it's rather complicated for games that require lots of controls. I used to play Descent with it, but once I could afford the flightstick, I didn't go back.
The mouse is good for very specific games. Most significantly RTS. It's speedy and accurate too. But it feels more work than game. Just not a "fun" controller.
The arcade stick. Almost all arcade games use an arcade stick. Almost no console or pc game uses an arcade stick :p
Steering wheel... perfect for most racing games, cannot be used for anything else.
Ahhh, the gamepad. Yep, Sony's DualShock. After I got one with the USB adapter, I am a little like sxamiga, playing all kinds of games with it. It surely is very versatile. You can pretty much play anything with it. Hence it comes with every console. It really seems the logical winner, but...

The flightstick. It looks weird. It was based on the design of small airplane control. You can never play street fighter with it. But somehow it just rocks. It's accuracy rivals the mouse, but beats it with better usability. Comfort is close to keyboard, both being stationed controllers, but it certainly has advantage with that analog control and better button placement. So how does it beat the good-for-everything gamepad? By being fun! Sure you can use the pad for Gran Turismo and then Virtual Fighter and then Mario64. But no thanks, I'll stick with Gran Turismo with the flightstick and have more fun. No, I don't play everything with the flightstick. I have to use an arcade stick for fighters, prefer steering wheel for racing sims, love the gamepad for general gaming... the point is, which controller gave me the most satisfaction? Taking into account how many games I use it with, and how much fun I had BECAUSE of the controller... it becomes clear, the flightstick beats all others by a good margin.

Same here, except for FPS + PC strategy games. I use a Directpad Pro cable that I made about 3 years ago. Can't stand the rumble feature though, I always turn it off.

PSX pad. It's the only way to play the emu. Keyb/mouse if it's an option for anything else tho.

this is a little off topic, but ive got jedi outcast for the pc, and have a usb converter for my psx controller, is there any way i can use the second analog stick to aim, as well as the first for movement.
I know i can use them in Tony Hawks 3 for pc (gr8 game btw), just for some reason there is no option apparently to make use of the second stick. Someone help me please.

Liamv,

1. you should start your own thread for that question. But that's ok you're new.

2. you should check LucasArts support page. Look what I found:

Good luck and have fun :)

the dual shock controller is my fav, but i found it really lacking in 2d fighters. I had to relearn all my moves to accomodate that dpad! and lets not even talk about all the blisters my poor friend got while i was giving him a beating :p
