View Full Version : Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind on my PC

I had to post some shots of this game. I just got it and I'm already in love with it. Its an RPG, but its very non-linear. You can go just about anywhere on an Island that's about 10 square miles. And you can pick up/use just about anything that's not nailed down. I don't even really know what if any real plot line this game has. Anyway, on to the shots.

I'm not sure why some of my shots are so dark. but I'm only posting this dark one. BTW these shots are from a GF4 Ti4400 with 4xS AA.

nice pic.. but doesn't this kind of game takes FOREVER to finish ?
sxamiga
May 7th, 2002, 19:42
BlackHawk, yes, RPGs can take a long time to finish. But that is why you can save your game. So you don't have to do it all at once. Since you can save your game, you can play as little or as much at a time as you like.

the longer it takes to finish, the better it is (that is if it takes longer because of many cool things not repetitiveness) morrowind can take from 5-100 hours to finish, and the way im playiing, its gonna take me 125 hours, which is good :p :D

I have this game too, and it is kinda slow but can be fun when you kill anyone you want. Typical dark elf fasion, sneak around, steal stuff, and kill the unsuspecting. For example, I killed a shopkeep for his prices displeased me. Another time I slayed a woman for not paying me after I delt with her rat problem. Must be at least 5 bodies in 4 or 5 towns I have traveled to so far.
P.S.
I love stealing, I love takin things...

Not many RPG games are unbalanced, but this game is,so it is possible to make so strong character in few days, that you are unbeatable, invisible + have your weapon enchanted with some uber powers due to soulstones, its good to be god,but it gets boring quickly, its like cheating,so be careful people.

Also does anyone else get low framerates on this game? I know I wont get a blistering speed with my setup, but my little brother has an AMD XP1700+ 256DDR and an MSI GeForce 3, and even he gets choppiness. As well as my friend with his AMD XP1900+ and GeForce 4 Ti4600 gets about 30 FPS at 1024x768. Thoughts, comments.

Yeah same here. I get about 10 or 15 fps when I'm outside, but I just can't persuade myself to turn off the 4xS AntiAliasing to get a few extra frames. Also I have the view distance set to maximum.
Oh yeah, here's how my character looks now...my robe glows because its magic. This sword is freakin' huge

yeah.... do the math.... the terrain is REALLY impressive, and add, let's say 2 metres of viewing range....... ur card will have to do A LOT more processing then.... but with a nice gf3 and amd xp 1700 it'll go no probs...... like with me.
btw, i'm a Khajit, thief style. I'm VERY RICH, and i train non stop so i get INSANE stats at the lowest levels. And with my marksman ship that high... heheh.... do you know HOW MUCH arrows u can just find lying around, i've found 1200 already... but then again, now i know i'm not gonna run out of ammo anytime soon.

Adair
May 13th, 2002, 09:36
I have a similar system too, except for the GF4(I was long overdue for an upgrade so I decided to get something new), but it seems that my ALi Magik chipset on my motherboard is slowing me down. I just hope that ALi or Iwill can get their stuff together and put out some good drivers.
BTW have any of you checked out any mods for morrowind yet? There's an official one that came out a day or two ago that lets you play some instruments in a bar in Balmora. There's a bunch of unofficial stuff too. Most of the unofficial stuff is either new weapons or armor and then there's a few where people added an abandon house or something that you can store stuff in. I haven't checked into any of them yet cause I've been too busy playing the game. I think I might play the unmodded game for a while longer unless something really cool comes out soon. If your interested check out the forums on the official morrowind site (http://www.elderscrolls.com/main.htm)
P.S. I even saw a mod that makes women topless when you kill them and take all their clothes, but it didn't look real great. The nipples weren't placed right.

Wow, good tip there spajdr. I have gotten stuck on polies a few times and had to reload. I saw that command on a cheat code site, but I didn't think of it when I was stuck. Actaully I didn't think it was meant for that purpose. The description on the cheat site was that it made you jump 128 units away from your current location so I was thinking that 128 units was alot farther than a meter and that the cheat was intended to bail you out of a fight when you were about to die. I should have known better since I took a game design class once where I learned about units.
*Random fact that I remember- An Unreal Tournament character is 96 units tall.

You'll definitely need at a 1gig CPU because the rendering engine used for Morrowind is very CPU intensive.
Checkout my PC config in my signature.
I'm running the game at 1024x768 with 4xS AntiAliasing. And you can see the FPS I'm getting in the outdoor environments by looking in the lower right corner of my screenshots.
P.S. I got a magic robe, magic helmet, and magic sword(among other magic things not shown in this pic)

sxamiga, glad to know you've entered the wrld of Morrowind. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Yes you can take pics without having to do the printscreen method. It just takes a quick tweak of the morrowind.ini file which can be found in the "...\bethesda softworks\morrowind\" folder. If you make any drastic changes to the .ini make sure you've made a backup of the original first.
Once your in the .ini scroll down about 25 lines and you should see this:
Screen Shot Enable=0
You want to change it to this:
Screen Shot Enable=1
Now you can play Morrowind and when you press the printscreen button it will automatically place your shot into the Morrowind folder. Why they had that off by default is beyond me.
Also if you want to see your fps then change the "show FPS=0" into "show FPS=1". You should find that in the first few lines of the .ini
Looking forward to some of your screen shots,
Adair

Actually there is a frame limiter built into the game which can be changed in the Morrowind.ini file, but its default setting is 240fps.
hmmm...240...maybe you have to tell it to limit at 10x what you actually want.
240 /10 =24 this sounds about right to me...j/k
BTW, I just couldn't hold out anymore. I had to cheat and summon some awesome glass armor. I think this is the best light armor you can get.

here's a front view. I'm actually not wearing those arm bracers anymore. I happened upon a pair of magic gauntlets in one of the countless caves that I've cleaned out. The right gauntlet gives me a constant effect(if I'm wearing it) of +20 agility. And the left one gives me a constant +20 strength. That pair of gauntlets is probably the best thing I've found in the game so far. If anybody just has to know where I found them then ask and I'll PM you the location because I don't wanna spoil anything for anyone(except you).

geez!! a +100 defense! that's uh.. nice
Looks like I have a ton more exploring to do(as if I didn't already know that) so I can find stuff like that.
It looks like you've got a very cool character there, Strider. I like the color scheme for him too, but for my character I'm trying to stick with dark armor and clothes. I've mainly been focusing on the same attributes as you except for light armor. And I wish I hadn't picked armorer as a minor skill. I should've gone with merchantile or possibly a magic skill instead.
Anyway here's my current stats and also the area I've explored. I try to completely explore a region before moving on but sometimes I just wanna run around and kill stuff. Most of the explored region to the north isn't very well explored. BTW I used a cheat to mark all the towns on the map.

Daedric Greaves - Dren Plantation, Villa second floor on a shelf
Ebony Cuirass - Dren Plantation, same as above
Ebony Long Sword - Dren Plantation, Slave Master chick has it
Mask of so-in-so vile - dagon fel - necromancer tower
Full set of Glass armor - Ghostgate - Tower of Dusk bottom floor
Boots of the Apostile (sp?) Keep - South East of Gnisis
You can just steal the daedric greaves and ebony cuirass from the villa in the dren plantation, this will tick off the owner and he'll attack you, as well as another guy appears out of no where to attack you, i used a shadow amulet to turn invisible, grab the stuff and run.
You have to kill the slave master in the dren plantation for the ebony long sword. also there's a theif in another hut in the dren plantation that has a glass long sword and shield, he's pretty easy to kill.
The mask that you get from the necromancer in dagon fel gives 181 def with a 68 in my heavy armor skill. the mask also provides the user with a constant +30 to personality, which is handy for dealing with npc's.
the full set of glass armor in the ghostgate tower is on the bottom floor in the smiths room on display on shelves and in crates. i've noticed that the glass items he has available changes from time to time, you can get a full set, over a full set, or a peice or to less than a full set. well worth stealing especially earlier on in the game.
the boots of the apostile was the hardest item i've aquired so far, i had to go all the way to the bottom of the keep which is south east of gnisis to get them, and the keep is filled with some pretty nasty monsters, but well worth the effort since the boots give me 72 def and 30 secs of levitate.
here's a pic of my char wearing some of the items i mentioned, namely the mask, a few glass pieces, the ebony cuirass, daedric greaves, and boots. pretty mismatched, but it works out fairly well.
if anybody knows the location of any daedric items i sure wouldn't mind a tip!

SPOILERS
I know where you can get some daedric weapons, such as the two handed dai-katana which does 1 - 60 damage in a chop. Basically here's what you gotta do...
Look on your map at Balmora, then look to the left at the shore and you'll see a strip of land that extends out from the mainland and then curves around to connect again. You need to explore that strip of land to find a couple of daedric temples. You'll see ruins of old castles that are gaurded by Atronachs and Daedra and one or two Orcs in full sets of orcish armor. Anyway if you explore the ruins you'll find a door to an underground temple called something like Ashurnibibi. If you go in the temple and find a big statue then save you're game, then pick up the stuff in front of the statue and a Daedra will appear. Kill him for his weapon and if you don't get a very good weapon off of him then reload that save and try to spawn him again. They usually only give short and long blades though. I wanted a daedric bow, but couldn't get one.
BTW there should be a couple of those temples in that area.

spoilers......
nice tip, i wasn't aware that the daedra could actually drop daedric items, every time i've killed one i ended up with a long sword or war axe like you said. i'll try the "respawn" trick later on.
also forgot to mention earlier that the necromancer in dagon fel also has a daedric dagger in his tower, not very powerful but it is worth a pretty penny.

Number 3, a shot from behind his head. It may look like he has only one ear, but he has two. The other is in shadow.

Number 4, here he is with a kill he just made. Took only two swings of the axe to kill this thing.

Number 5 and the last, for now. Here he is getting ready to cast some healing magic. His birthsign is the sign of the Ritual, so, even though he is an ORC Warrior, he can cast healing magic and turn undead.

Heh, thanks:emb:
Actually I would recommend choosing something other than the armorer skill. I have hardly used it to repair anything myself. And when I had picked the speechcraft skill I was under the impression that it did what the merchantile skill does. Other than that I've been real happy with my skills. I almost wish I had picked some skill that was based off of endurance (ie: spear, medium armor, heavy armor), but I realized recently that if I can level-up my spear skill about 10 levels in between leveling up my overall character then I can choose Endurance x5. So I guess I'm going to try and pick 3 different characteristics(that I don't already have maxed out) and I'll level up my skills that are based on those characteristics, which should make me a badass in no time flat.;)
Ok I'm kinda rambling here, but I'm just saying its taken me a while to figure out exactly how the game determines how many endurance points I can get with one level-up.

I want to share a pic I took which makes a good desktop wallpaper.
Its got a strange resolution because I cut off the bottom and side to get rid of the HUD, but you can cut/resize it as you like.

Is anybody still playing this game?
I got kinda bored with it and haven't played it since GTA3 has been out. I never actually followed the main story to it. Maybe I'll still play it, talk to Caius Cosades, and beat it just to be done with it. Although its kinda boring because nothing really even comes close to killing my 30th level character. I might have to get myself some weaker weapons just for a challenge.

Adair : its boring after like week or two,its just too easy after level 15+ right ? :p there are mods, that can make more challenge, but still i liked daggerfall more.;) (in one game magazine there is full version of Planescape Tourment (old game but i never played it) and its much better that Morrowind ;)

i never really liked ds... i said it had nice graphics... but i didnt see anything else spectacular... morrowind i still cheer for, pretty revolutionary game for me, firsr one in a long time with such an "open" storyline

Strider, I agree, you were always open minded. Okay, to you, Adair, and anyone else who sees what I have said, here is what it is. I feel that both games are quite nice and they are new material, maybe the same plot as has been done before, but basically new material. So instead of eveybody being glad to get something new, they ge bored with it very quickly and then start asking, again, why aren't here any, new, good games for the PC.
Please realize that I am not aiming this at any one person in paticular, but referring to things that I have heard fom many people. So here they are, still wondering why no new games are coming, when in fact some just did. Also, game companies and developers keep an eye on the "pulse" of things and maybe, when they see people's interest fade that quickly, they get discouraged as well. They may feel that "They can never satisfy thegaming public" so why try. Then they just go back to rushing out pieces of "yuck" instead of nice, well thought out, games. So in essence it is the whining and then getting bore quickly when something new IS offered that I am tired of. I just don't understand it I guess. I hope this helps clear it up some.

Hmm .. well ... i played my first game when i was 8 years old.Today im 24 and if i look at games, not many of them are revolutionary, most of them just have superb graphic, but thats all.Doom III looks nice, but millions of polygons didnt make it to be cool game, anyone tried editor for NewerWinter Nights ? looks very good,i like all game from Black Isle Studios, cause they make quality games.Look at Warzone 2100,great strategy game, but died, cause of stupid Eidos. Not many game companies add new units to game, but if you look at Warzone 2100 .. 10 patches and more than 20 new units, thats just great, reminds me also of Total Annihilation, still also great game.If there is some new game coming, they should release demo first THEN full game.Well i wanted to write more, but since my english sucks, forget it :-)
Since i finished Dungeon Siege 4 times, what i liked most was game engine, not monsters, not sound, but game engine, possibility to make a game without constant loading, like we have in morrowind, thats step forward.

sx/amiga, I don't take offense to anything you've ever said. So no worries.
Anyway, you've got a very valid point about developers possibly getting frustrated by the short attention spans of the consumers. Its sad, but basically unavoidable. People aren't going to play games they find boring no matter how much time and effort the developers put into it.
And I know that post wasn't completely directed at me personally, but just for the record:
I think Morrowind is a great game overall, but its not balanced very well. I don't even mind very much that its repetative(all the NPC's say very similar things), but my character who is around level 30 is basically godlike in the world or Morrowind. I play games for a challenge, but in Morrowind I can kill just about anything in 1-3 hits and the enemies barely even hurt me. I must say that the environments still blow me away with their detail.
And I'm not wondering why there are no great PC games. I don't feel that way at all. I'm very happy with GTA3 right now, but will probably become bored with it before long, but I know there will be another game to take its place by the time that happens. (possibly UT2k3)

Actually I enjoyed reading your posts. I had never thought about developers frustration before in that way. So you opened my eyes to something new, which IMO can't be bad.
