View Full Version : avatar constraints

Strider

i dont have a problem with the file size constraints of an avatar but what about the physical size of the image... most titles are longer than the person's image... i think the pixels could be 80x80 (or so)and it wouldnt have that much of an effect on ngemu. What do you guys think about this?

EDIT: oops i typed in the wrong type of your in the poll btw, only choose the 3rd option if you have no opinion

That's a great idea for me, but let's see what Bobbi has to say. ;)

Strider
May 5th, 2002, 03:14
it is bobbi's decision in the end, but my opinion is that there wouldnt be a problem making the dimensions bigger if the size constraints were still the same and if the page layout wasnt changed at all... just look at evil squall's 10 red stars .. theyre much longer than his pic, its not like if the pic would be longer it would stretch out the page.

Strider

i think they should stay the same for one reason only:
i make my own avatars. all the other boards i go to have the constraints set to 65x65, so thats how big i make my avatars. if its 80x80, itll stretch it and get all ugly.

Keith
May 5th, 2002, 03:23
it will not stretch it

zerocopy
May 5th, 2002, 03:24
The bigger the better

Ryos
May 5th, 2002, 03:52
Er...that's the reason why it's at where it's at. The problem is that the bigger the avatar limits are, the more likely people are to throw big avatars in there, both in pixel and physical size.

Strider
May 5th, 2002, 04:02
the 15k size constraint can still remain, its just that 80x80 would be a little better because you have to really shrink most images when making an avatar, and then in 65x65 theyre too small to still have visible details. Most images i have to cut off the person's body just so that you can recognize who it is

Strider

well... the bigger the restrictions, the more freedom we get for making our avatars. so, i vote "yes" to al gore being president........ oh wait, wrong place.

ShADoWFLaRe85
May 5th, 2002, 05:35
I see this as a good idea. That's a good point that titles and start stretch beyond the avatar. People that have already created 65 x 65 avatars shouldn't have a problem with this, because they shouldn't stretch, but remain the same size.

Strider
May 5th, 2002, 06:08
80x80 is just an asking size, i would think we could pull off 100x100 but then again it would be a little too big... its just that 65x65 makes the little details sort of invisible, take my current avatar's eyes for example, theyre barely there.

sincerely,
Strider

Your avatar has eyes? :p

Yeah, good idea... I agree with this nice idea. :)

We can increase the level - doesn't mean that you *have* to use an avatar of 80x80 ... I guess we'll listen to the needs of the public here ?

Shadow Lady
May 5th, 2002, 15:19
I dont think there is a problem whit it, as far as I can still get mine working ^^

i agree, a bigger avatar size would be better :)

Neojag
May 5th, 2002, 16:52
i think ill let mine 65x65 anyway...

Keith
May 5th, 2002, 17:22
I still remember when it was 50x50 and I talked Bobbi into 65x65 .. I too agree 80x80 would be good as long as the actual image file size still stays limited to current limit.

Strider
May 5th, 2002, 17:56
well, thanks for the support, and shadowflare, yes raziel has eyes, theyre just beady glowing white :p. Making the boundary limit higher would not force people to make a new avatar as bobbi stated, but rather give more freedom. I hope bobbi allows the limits, it looks like he isnt displeased with my suggestion, so thats a good start.

sincerely,
Strider

15KB is still generous. A move to 80x80 with the same file size limits wouldn't be all bad I suppose....

And while I'm on the topic of suggestion, may I suggest including .rar files in the list of allowable attachments?

G-Pitts
May 5th, 2002, 18:23
A rar files? thats a good idea, rar compression is better than zip so thats mean less download time and save the server HD space.

ShADoWFLaRe85
May 6th, 2002, 05:05
I can't argue with that :)

Strider
May 6th, 2002, 05:48
not to mention winrar is a lot easier to use than winzip... and also winrar has those winrar self extracting files... but i believe this should become a thread in itself since its gonna drag this one way offtopic

I use both of them, but most of ppl use Winzip

i like this idea i never bothered with making my custom avatar for 2 reason first off can't find a good delita pic and second if i could it would too small see to anything.

i believe that winace has a little better compression ratio than winrar does. winzip is quite easy to use, but it's for those beginners. not to mention that zip files can easily coppurt via transers. rar files can be SFV checked with SFV files and SFV Checker, and winace is just plain good.

G-Pitts
May 15th, 2002, 00:11
If you want the best compression, go for .jar and .cab format. Winrar is better than winace because it still actively being develop and released. Winace in the other hand contain spyware(the old version) and lack of update.

Yup this idea make sence.

when will this go in to effect?

Strider
May 20th, 2002, 06:27
i dunno... but i hope after the "guest" problem is resolved. I'd much rather be able to login with my normal user than to to be able to make a new avatar for a user i cannot use

I think 15k is way too small. Especially for animated gif's. The dimensions are fine but the size could be bigger. At least 50000 bytes. Look at overclockers.com they have 100x100 avatars and max size of 100k. Also, a larger size limit allows for some really cool animated avatars

Strider
May 20th, 2002, 07:11
actually... i disagree with you there... 1: the dimensions are too small to be able to see details 2: if it was 100k every fool out there would make a big avatar and it would use up way too much bandwidth and it certainly wouldn't help the page's loading speed.

sincerely,
Strider

G-Pitts
May 20th, 2002, 07:19
100k avatar size limit is too big. The page will take too long to load for 56k modem like me. I completely disagree with you.

Esturk
May 20th, 2002, 07:23
I still think 50k is a good size. And not everybody will have an anim ated gif that's exactly 50k.

G-Pitts
May 20th, 2002, 07:34
I know that not everyone will use the maximum size but it still take too much bandwidth because I believe everyone will create a fancy new avatar(25+ kb in size). The page loading time will increase 2 to 3 times for people with slow connection.

Nezzar
May 20th, 2002, 15:11
...not to talk about the more bandwith caused by this. (dunno if it would be really *that* much)

Kellicros
May 20th, 2002, 15:29
Yeah, bandwith is expensive you know?

Esturk
May 20th, 2002, 17:04
F**k it then. Close the damn thread. It's not going to change anything anyways.

Shiori
May 20th, 2002, 17:05
Dimensions could be raised a bit without seriously compromising filesize limits. An additional 5K to bring it to 20K oughta do it.

So is this "avatar dimension change" proposal even being seriously considered?

Esturk
May 20th, 2002, 17:13
Probably not!

Shiori
May 20th, 2002, 17:22
Let's see what the Main Man has to say about this then.... assuming Bobbi's even aware of this. :p

G-Pitts
May 20th, 2002, 18:10
Bobbi know about this, read the first page of this thread. He said he want to see public opinion about this.

"We can increase the level - doesn't mean that you *have* to use an avatar of 80x80 ... I guess we'll listen to the needs of the public here ?" -bobbi...

actually i think he said that he will listen to what the opinion was at that time, which is basically what it is now. I think he's just been busy with a lot of other stuff or forgot about this... oh well...

I know im sorta double posting but i just wanted to get everyone's attention. It seems the new constraints have been added in, if you care to take a look at ryos' new avatar, its 80x80. Well, im not sure who altered the board settings but thanks. Now that the suggestion has been granted, i dont believe there is a need for this thread to continue, im glad to see my suggestion was allowed, but now, its time to stop talking and start making myself a new avatar :) If an administrator or mod sees this, i believe you should close this before it goes offtopic. :) Have a nice day,

Sincerely,
Strider

Esturk

Remember Ryos has the power to make his avatar any size he wants. But who cares it's fine the way it is. Bobbi's probably busy and we shouldn't bother him anymore.

Ryos
May 22nd, 2002, 17:53
Yep, the avatar limits are still at 65x65. I have no idea when they might be changed. This avatar didn't look right in 65x65, so I had to bump it up a bit.

so... i wonder if this is going to get ratified, i think everyone forgot about this crusade

Esturk

I guess they did.

Strider
June 14th, 2002, 04:32
nope... i just tried it, still not working

Esturk
June 14th, 2002, 04:34
Of course it's not working. Nothing has been changed as a result of this thread.

Strider
June 14th, 2002, 04:35
it seemed like we had quite a momentum going before though, even some admins backed it up, and bobbi said he would consider the opinion of the public somewhere on the first page, i guess we all forgot about it

Esturk
June 14th, 2002, 04:40
Ya. Oh well. There are other places where we can have huge avatars. There are reasons why they have the constraints.

Strider
June 14th, 2002, 06:08
yeah, but if you read this thread before you would know i wasnt asking for a 300 pixel avatar, only 80, thats 15 extra pixels for width and length, most titles and stars take up more space, and the size of the avatar could remain 15 kb, those were my main arguments considering that its sometimes hard to squeeze details into a small constraint

Esturk
June 14th, 2002, 18:46
I was not asking for 300pixels either. I think 100x100 is the best. Though 80x80 is good too. I don't think there's a big size difference.

Strider
June 14th, 2002, 20:27
yeah, which means nothing would really change, cept there could be a little more detail inside our avatars

Esturk
June 14th, 2002, 22:07
Which would be nice.:)

Strider
June 14th, 2002, 23:47
hmm, glad we're on the same page then, i wouldnt have revived this thread if someone said "yes" or "no" to the idea but i think we all just forgot

Esturk
June 15th, 2002, 01:50
Either we forgot or we gave up the idea.:)

Skye
June 15th, 2002, 02:06
Need to get rid of the lamerz first then we will see.

Esturk
June 15th, 2002, 02:09
I suppose all the problems as of late have put our idea on hold. Let's just wait and see what happens. And try and help as much as we can. There's nothing we can do about the lamers right now. The worst thinng we can do is leave. Especially since 90% of the mods have dissapeared.

100 X 100 would be really nice but, then we would have to boost up the filesize limit to like 20 kb, since, i had to do alot of tweaking for my avatar to be less than 15 kb while it was in 85 X 85, heh, even ask strider about that. but then again, 100 X 100 would be a nice idea although, let's just stick with 85 X 85 for now

Kane
June 25th, 2002, 23:55
I pointed out in another thread that it isn't really a good idea to increase the filesize as people will take advantage of this, slowing the site for those that use dial up connections. Already you see the people who have increased thier avatars to 85x85 ( I will myself when I get back to my computer)

Strider

Esturk

The size limit is still 15K. My new 85x85 avatar weighs in at a hefty 1.09K. It's a GIF. My fullsize Esturk avatar at 100x100 weighs in at 1.18K. Not too big a difference I'd say.

Kane
June 26th, 2002, 01:42
What I'm getting at is that people with detailed avatars might get lazy about jpeg compression.
My one should be relatively small as it's monochrome, and if people are sensible about compression, then it might work. There are enought lazy people out there to spoil it tho.

Strider
June 26th, 2002, 02:26
well... its not really monochromatic... black and white are opposites :p

Esturk
