"A new company 3DPower has absorbed almost 90% of the former employees of 3DFX.

What is rumoured to lie behind such a move will have nVidia out on a Rampage. RamPage was the graphics chipset that was under development by 3DFX right before nVidia stepped in. 3DPower will probably put the chip to good use in their debut card the "3DPower Absolute". The PCB of the card will be black with gold componets seated in a smart wooden box.

It seems 3DPower secretly formed this new company without nVidia nor 3DFX knowing, this move is bound to get under nVidia's skin. It has the potential to raise some serious legal issues.

Even though the story hasn't been confirmed yet, it cannot hurt to get another big player in the graphics card market since nVidia seems to be getting too cocky for the consumers good."

Unfortunatly, nVidia owns the Glide API, and the chip that 3dfx was working on. So unless they develop a totally new GPU, there could be tremedous legal issues..

Thanks for the information, hopefully it is true.. although i have been more of a nvidia fan since the 128..

Hehe, that's pretty nifty Enigma. Hopefully some of the old 3dfx employees took their driver code and such and we'll see some updated drivers for the older cards. Actually, it'd be interesting if they'd learn something from nVidia and start distributing unified drivers.

Hadn't 3dfx started open sourcing glide before they sold the company to nvidia. I seem to rember seeing that somewhere if that is the case then all nvidia actually bought was the name and all the current boad layouts (and i am not sure but i think 3dfx's fabrication plants)

I always wondered about that deal anyways... meaning what in the heck did Nvidia actually get from buying 3dfx's name. because that is basically all they did since they don't plan on making their own cards just licensing others to produce the cards using their processors (like 3dfx used to). Unless they make their own cards the fab plants are 99.9% uselessto them except to cut em up and sell em off (assuradly taking a loss). the designs for the video cards are totaly useless to them as well they already have cards in production (geoforce 3 anyone). wich will out perform anything 3dfx had on the market, and from what I hear on the drawing board.

I think the only reason Nvidia bought 3dfx was to remove them from the market and now with this start up company coming it proves they did not even do that.

Truth be told Glide is old and worn out and just about dead. 3dfx seemed to be aknowledging that fact when they started talk about open sourcing it.

Well, 3DFX was looking to sell... They knew that they were beat since the TNT card came out... It just happened that when 3DFX was sold to nVidia, they discontinued all thier products. Their sells droped tremedously when they started producing thier own cards. Having only a single outlet and a single choice for a manufacture really did them harm...

Interesting... so there may still a competition in the 3d market after all. Maybe it will drive down the absurdly high prices that Nvidia charge for the latest video cards

Betamax, the only reason the latest Nvidia cards (I assume you are talking about the GEForce 3) are so expensive is because they are new. Wait until they've been out for a while and I am sure the prices will drop. That is always the case here in the US where I live.

Well I am of the view that 3dfx is way better then Direct3D..correct me if I am wrong....Because I have kept a Voodoo 3000 16MB AGP and Voodoo Banshee 16MB with me a long time and the results that I got from them were way better then Riva TnT2.....I have also seen some stuff of G-Force.....but the graphics on emus using lewpy's plugins on a Voodoo 5500 are better then G-force..........I will always support 3dfx.........

same here 3dfx all the way. I just bought the geoforce 2 mx and it wasnt that great as 3dfx ...glide is the best and will remain the best no matter what anyone says

Well, i would have to disagree... Glide is great, dont get me wrong... But it just is not as capable as OGL. I would have to disagree that the graphics on any psx emu look better in glide than in OGL... I have compared the 5500 to a GeForce MX... and my opinon was the oppisite liaqatali...

Actually buddy I am not a computer expert I am simply a user U know.....I think U are angry because I just neglected the capabilities of G-Force........sorry for that....but I have used glide for a long time and still know I have a Voodoo Banshee 16MB and it performs very well for me.......My friend has a G-force 2MX and a Voodoo 5500....he himself says that Voodoo is better.......thats why I supported Glide.....

Well U talk about Glide and opengl I don't know a **** about them.....

There is no need to get rash in this discussion......I am talking to U cd and icehot..take it easy..talk nicely and friendly.....these things cause fight and hate........and result is nill....everyone posseses a different choice..........so respect each others ideas and choices......I hope U got it........take it easy fellows!

Just because I correct your mindless statement, you bring up a decision about another user insulting a moderator and a forum user, and suggest that the decision was because one of the said people couldn't 'take it like a man', how moronic.

If you'd like to argue with me about Glide, or anything else, please use arguments pertaining to the topic, it saves people from having to read useless bull**** from someone who think his older age makes him superior, yet the so-called 'inferior' person can discern the difference between Glide and other APIs, and can see the pros and cons of each, and make a decent decision on the 'best', in general.

You obviously have no knowledge of the Glide API except that it runs fast on 3dfx hardware, I'll kindly ask you to take you and your poor typing skills out the this discussion, since elders shouldn't really be fraternizing with 'kids', eh?

There are other admis too but they treat the others nicely and softly and we repect them..........U on the other hand disgrace their views and use harsh language........!

Excuse me, but my langauge was quite civilized, I don't recall using any vulgarities, except for the word 'bull****'. I'm merely defending myself from a seemingly malicious user. Oh, and I think I should mention my status is not an Administrator, and I'm not a staff member of PSXEmu.com...

As for calling 'our' views bull****, I did no such thing. I was talking to ice2hot the ENTIRE post. Never once did I talk of another user, except a banned user in question, and an admistrator who performed the banning, both remaining completely nameless. I was merely telling him to leave useless discussions out of the thread.

My 'insult' as you call it, wasn't very insulting. I just said he was uninformed about Glide and other Graphics APIs, if he's making a statement like that.

Also, about calling him a poor typist, he insulted me, insinuating that my age shows my intelligence level. I believe that minor 'comeback' was fair.

But since you all seem to think I'm an *******, so be it. This will be last post at these forums. I'm tired of getting insulted for defending myself, whether it be against a said banned user, ice2hot, or anyone else. First of all I must say I am not taking anyones side here. There is just one thing I don't get ... when Ice2Hot said "same here 3dfx all the way. He was stating his experiences from his own hardware and giving his own opinion about his experiences. He is just a fan of 3dfx and in his opinion, he feels it is the best .... so here is where my confusion comes from. Why did other users take offence to Ice2Hot's opinion of his own experiences. Does he not have the right to believe in his own mind that it is the best and nothing will change his mind? Why do people have to take offense and tell him he is wrong? As far as I can see ... he wasn't stating facts ... just an opinion. I could understand if he was making an argument, but there was none. Just as a fan of a losing team can still feel they are the best in their mind and have loyalty to a team they might have followed for years ... so can a fan of anything.

As for the other statements. I honestly believe that if people were able to express their opinions of their own experiences without people always correcting them and telling them they are wrong ... when it's not even a fact they are talking about, but an opinion ... then maybe a lot of conflicts can be avoided. As for Ice2Hot's response, that was out of line and should not be tolerated. These are the type of things that get people banned.

His statement which I focused on did not say that Glide was the best for him, it clearly said Glide was 'THE BEST', and would forever be the best.

I am not an admistrator, please stop refering to me as one.

No one said 3DPower was ****e, I for one welcome them, I'm always a 3dfx fanboy at heart, I just think that someone who thinks Glide is the best API, and that it will be for quite some time, needs to do a bit of research on the subject.

I'd appreciate it if no one would attempt to reprimand me in my possibly indefinate absence..

As for 'thinking before I speak', I would not wish to retract any of my statements in this thread, for they are all perfectly fine..

True but they usually only drop the said prices after they release a new card. Now According to the last Nvidia financial report:

For the first quarter of fiscal 2001, revenues increased to $148.5 million, compared to $71.0 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2000,

Thats and increase of 77.5 million. More than double on last year. Although most of that could be used in development of new cards etc I still feel that they could afford to drop the starting price slightly. However as long as there is no competition in the market they are unlikely to do so. I remember that when the TNT came out they didn't ask for nearly as much for a starting price. This was to make it attractive to the voodoo 2 users of the time.

Personal experience can mean both nothing and everything, depending on how much knowledge the person experiencing had about the subject. Well, i never said anything about being angry.. I was just simply asking a question to try and comprehend what kind of technical background you came from... I have compared the GF2 series card to a Voodoo 5500. And like i said in my post "in my opinon"...

From a technical stance, in which i have an extensive background, glide is belittled by the capabilities of OpenGL..

And one more thing, CD, dont go... people just take things too personally some times... Maybe all of you need a hug or a beer..

This thread is pointless anyway. This was proven false LONG ago, and there's no real point in debating who's propererer. How did the rumor get started anyway? If you just read into it a little, you'll notice that they make cards for Nvidia. Now, I guess you could say it isn't technically false, but the ones who started the 'rumor' obviously wanted more than old 3dfx employees making Nvidia-based cards.
