i liked ff9 in the 3d era best i believe that it took the series back to its roots of being a fantasy and such.

i am still biased towards the original FF for the NES but the best on the SNES was ffIII/VI that one was just cool

FF III = FF 6 (the same)

The original title which was released in Japan is FF6
The US version is titled FF III. And yes, this is the Best FF for 2D era.
I enjoyed playing this game with ZSNES - rich storyline, cool characters, and all the joy you will have playing this one :cool:

My favorite one if Final Fantasy IV (the japanese, not that thing they released in the US). Very good story, characters, everything. Awesome game.
Final Fantasy III is cool, but the World of Ruins missed a storyline. :(
But it's still a very good game. :)

But I didn't like any of the FFs released on the Playstation.

FFVII - You spend the whole game asking if someone has seen a man in a black cape. Then you find him, he runs away, and you go ask in the next town.
FFVIII - Now you get to spend four discs killing evil sorceresses. Witch-hunt baby, yeah! Burn'em to the stakes!
FFIX - 1. Monarch decides to invade a country.
2. Zidane reaches country with a party member from that area and attempts to defend it.
3. Zidane fails, goes on to the next country.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 until all countries have been defeated.

I chose FF IX because it harkens back to the orginal FF that I played and beat on the Nintendo. Yes, Metalmurphy, FF III/FF VI is that good.:D Give it a try, I think you'll be impressed.

The only problem with Final Fantasy III vs Final Fantasy IV was when the moved to the US, they took out most of the contriversial issues... Which kind of makes the game seem not so great...

But still, III/IV i belive had the best story line of them all...

There were two separate releases of FFIV in Japan. A hardcore version (very hard), and a light version (very easy). The one released in the US was the light (easier, with less skills and items) version, and the storyline was butchered too.
And FFIII had a great story, at least until you got to the World of Ruins (where it had no story at all).

But it's gets easy after a while. And it's the best you get.

I chosed FFVIII but FVII is also really god.

i noticed that in the screen shots they changed the battle veiw around. looks like they added, what should i call it, a waiting list on the upper right corner. i wonder if there are spells and attacks that cause some one to get pushed down. kindof like grandia 2 for the DC.

this is just me wondering aloud.
i think it would be kinda cool since in grandia 2, a skilled player could take out a whole group of enemies without them even attacking

I was actually a little disappointed with VIII. The gameplay consisted of as follows:

1: enter batle
2:activate GF
3:Wait
4:repeat as nessesary, with an occasional use of cure/potion

This method worked for every boss/monster up to the end of disk3.

In VII and IX the gameplay was much more stratigic and you actually used magic rather than storing it to boost stats.

some FF VIII scenes are bore, but i liked it, it was the first i played
but heres my list:
1 - FF 7
2 - Chrono cross (not really a final fantasy, in fact, it has nothing to do w/ it :D )
3 - FF 8
4 - FF 9
5 - FF 6

but keep in mind they are all gr8 games :)

if you want my opinion , i think that there was no best or in other
words perfect final fantasy release.

ff3 = was one of the best at music the story line was very good at many parts but not all of it .

ff7=the story line : very good begining but not the whole story line because some times
the storyline is dead and boring and the music is annoying and playing continuosly
not forgetting the battles is killing the game (cant move a couple of inches without facing an annoying
silly chess playing like battle)

ff9=one of the best psx games at graphics the music was very deffirent than the older relaeses
i liked it a lot the story line was wonderful at the begining then it starts to get bad then worse till
it gets very bad which made me almost hated it big time.

actually i didnt play 4, 6 ,or 8 but i saw a lot of each but it wasnt enough to judge them fairly.

but there is one thing that i think some of you agree with me about which is the battles ,
yeah the battles is annoying and very bad at almost all of the releases .
its more like playing chess more than a real action battle
(after listening to the battle music thats the feeling that i get- a big battle with some real
serious action) but its not.not forgetting that it pops up from no where which is the real most annoying thing about it.
i think the way of battles of legend of dragoon is a lot better.
i know that no one have to agree with me with every thing i said but at least this is what i always thought about
of final fantasy which is still some of my most liked games series.

The Best is probably Final Fantasy VI

Also VERY Good are IV and V, even though V has never left Japan, you can get a translated Version.

VI - best Storyline, fantastic atmosphere
(which is often Missing at part VII and VIII)

V - Best Ideas - Job System, great Final Dungeon

IV- It's just the most classic/traditional one

Yes they are. FF II = American or US version, FF IV = Japanese version. The same is true of FF III = American or US version, FF VI = Japanese Version. Japan had 2 more FFs for the Famicom (8 bit Nintendo) than the US did. So those were FF 1, 2, and 3. The US had 1 for the 8 bit Nintendo, 2 for the SNES, III for the SNES, no 4, no 5 (until it was released for the PSX) no 6, 7 for the PSX, 8 for the PSX, 9 fro the PSX, 10 (not released yet) for the PS2, and 11 (not released yet) for the PS2. Japan has 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 (not released yet), and 11 (not released yet). There you have it, the order of the FFs. Confusing isn't it?:confused:

FF V : Good story, but very difficult, and leveling up jobs takes VEry llong

FFVI: my second favorite, good story, and lots of humor

FFVII: Aslo good story, but I dont like Clouds Identity crisses, (ending sucks too; leavs so much openinig...)

FFVIII: Nice character design, but bad story,

FFIV: Fun gameplay and interaction, but a very cliche series.

ive read numerous times that ffX and ffXI were both coming to PC then they werent then they were then they werent..... and it just keeps going.

there are several posts on this forum that cover this topic so you might want to check them out.

as for my opinion on ffXI, i know i wouldnt like it. im not much for the online gameing. i am also thinking that there wont be much of a single player mode in it since most online games have little or no single player mode

Square decided to change the stories previusly used until FF6 (dungeon & dragons style) to a new kind of script in FF8. For information, the Final Fantasy movie is also in that style.

This story is not the best in the series but it make a real new fresh air in the saga. Yes I got problems, at the begining, with the new way to manage this game but I understood the philosophy and finaly It was a pleasure. No other game make me this effect....

Because it's original and somewhat like a book or movie, I choosed Final Fantasy 8 as my best adventure in the Final Fantasy series folowed by FF9 for the sound/graphics. FF6/FF3 had good story but the pleasure was not so great (perhaps because it was on SNES).

I'll tell you which games ruled, which games sucked, and why. Remember this is strictly my opinion but I think us old schoolers know best.

Final Fantasy 3/6 - Best in the series. Nubuo Uematsu's best soundtrack ever. Get some of the OST versions and you'll be in heaven. Storyling is freakin' incredible. Kefka is the best nemesis ever created in all of RPGdom. All illustrations and characters drawn by Yo****aka Amano. Nuff said. You'll love each character unlike the PSX FF's which only make a few ok characters. Yu can also be a mog! I really can't say enough. Words can't convey this game properly. Just go play it!

Final Fantasy 2/4- The debut SNES FF. Storyling is full of more twists and turns than a Six Flags roller coaster. Intense music and awesome characters. Is Kain not the coolest ****?

Final Fantasy 7 - Debut PSX FF. Another cast of awesome characters. 3d graphics were jaw-dropping for the time. Tell me you don't swallow your gum the first time you used a Bahamut summon. Mini-games were the coolest. FF snowboarding is mega awesome. Materia allows for infinite combinations of effects and attacks. My favortie system thus far. Sephiroth is #2 to Kefka but still a badass by all means. Music was great. My favorite of all 3 PSX titles.

Final Fantasy 8 - BBOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNGGGGGG!!! !!!!!! I played all the way to the end of disc 3 when I just put it down and never picked it back up. It had it's moments but they were few and far between. Also introduced the card game which is probably the worst addition to the FF universe. If you want a fun card game go grab some Magic cards. This is ridiculous. Music is sub par. "Draw" system is goddam retarded. Here's how I spent at least 25 hours of the 30 I played on it....DRAWING MAGIC ON THE FRICKIN WORLD MAP! I don't mind spending some time gaining levels but getting into 30 minute long battles just to draw 99 magics from one monster is A WASTE OF TIME. The only good thing I can say about this game is that the opening song is kickass. Librati Fatali I think? I forget....just like I try to forget this game ever existed.

Final Fantasy 9 - Kinda boring in the beginning but heats up somewhere in the second disc. Music is bearable but I miss the older tunes from 6 and 7. Returning to the roots was an ok decision but it still seems kinda weird. Characters are cool but some are lacking. All of Zidane's "buddies" should just stay the hell out of the story. They're like what Jar Jar Binks did for the Phantom Menace. They should have just been random people instead of clinging to the story. The cinematic cut scenes in this game steal my breath. Just makes me that much more enthused for the Final Fantasy movie coming out in 10 days. Not a bad game at all. 5 million times better than 8 will ever be.

Well I spent about 10 seconds just rattling off some things I had on the top of my head. I'm sure I could name more likes/dislikes but I'll just leave it as is. All the guys saying that FF8 is the best probably just upgraded their console from a Colecovision to a PSX.

No,you see,before I bought a PSX,I used to have(and still have):
NES,SNES,Game Boy
and before I played FF8,I had played all the others either on the real thing or an emu,and the only thing I can tell you is that yes,FF6 is an incredible game but not the best IMO,you say that FF9 bored you only in the beginning,I was bored during all the game.
With FF8,I have never been bored,musics are the best of all the FFs(except for the opera song of FF6).
Annd about the battle system,it's true it can be disappointing but you can make incredible things with your junctions.

Well I can't contest Raziel as now it's only a matter of opinion. I will agree that I'm struggling to keep interested in FF9.

And just for your info I'm an old school gamer myself. Been playing since the Atari. I wish I had my SNES, NES, and Genesis but I sold them to get the PSX when it first came out =(

FF8 just doesn't have that many appealing songs to me. I have all 3 PSX OST's but 7 has to be my favorite. FF6 beats them all in my opinion but that's my opinion.

BTW not to insult you but have you played and completed FF6?

Yes I did,and IMO Kefka is the best Last boss in all th FF series.
The stage idea was great(you know it goes up an up).
But the thing I hated the most about FF7 is the fact tha Sephiroth becoms crazy at some point(like Kefka)and at the end he's just a pumped out version of Kefka(angel wings and all),and it's the same for Kuja in FF9,it seems that Squaresoft is currently in need for a goo scenarist:D .

Say it ain't so! I'm somewhere in the middle of the third disc of FF9 right now. I can see how he's beginning to gravitate towards that "I'm a god with angel's wings because I'm in a square RPG" type badguy.

And my other major gripe with Kuja at this point(besides his lame ass name) is that he is just NOW becoming a big deal in the game. In all the other Final Fantasies you knew who the badguy was beforehand and had ample time to develop a dislike for him. I'm in the 3rd disc and Kuja is finally becoming a big part of the story.

It's like this to me...I played discs 1 and 2 with a single enemy and a single plot. All of a sudden I'm on disc 3 with a new enemy and an entirely different plot that has nothing to do with discs 1 and 2. Maybe that's a bit extreme but it doesn't really feel like the game has gone anywhere.

Heh, I don't know about the rest of you but I think FF V was a really good game. It didn't have much of a plot and had a cheesy villain, but it had solid gameplay and I believe it was the last true Final Fantasy game (well, within the numbered series, FFT not included). Starting from FF6 things got too technological and it lost that medieval concept as well as all the traditional classes and also the concept of the crystals that the FF series has been based on since FF1. Things only got worse with FF7, where all characters were pretty much blank slates and the focus shifted to graphics. FF9 sorta went back to the old FF concept but not nearly to the extent they should have(classes weren't defined clearly enough) and the plot was shallow. Not that FF6 was a bad game, I mean FF6 and FF8 probably had the best plot out of all the games, which is priority in any RPG, but as an old-school FF gamer I vouch for FF V. Many US gamers didn't ever get to play this one but it's a must for any hardcore FF fan.

FF4 is my favorite game of all time! Then again, I liked Grandia II. Am I the only one who likes "cliche" games? Am I the only one who thinks "cliche" means "actually doing something important"? I mean, I'd rather save the world than try to get a girlfriend (Harvest Moon is an exception, because the plot isn't set in stone).

Who is stupid enough to try to assassinate a SORCERESS that can OBVIOUSLY protect themselves from that kind of thing!?!? I mean, it would've at least made SENSE if they tried it while she was SLEEPING! I would think that if it were that simple, it would've been done already. Not to mention that they INTENTIONALLY put her on her guard! That whole "day" is some of the worst trash I have ever seen. If you can't guess, I didn't get very far into the second disc.

This is a hard one because I have specificly 4 favorite Final Fantasies.

Final Fantasy 4 - Had absolutely revolutionary for an RPG back in 1991. The Return of Rydia was probably the most memorable scene. Awesome story to boot

Final Fantasy 6 - Was technically superior in everyway to FF4. I remember playing this back in 1994, The story was darker than FF4. But they still managed to put some humor in.

FInal Fantasy 8 - I really like everything about this game. The story was very well written, everything was soo serious. Also it was a complete departure from all previous final fantasies.

Final Fantasy 9 - Light hearted game, complete reverese of Final Fantasy 8. Lovable characters too.

Yeah, I think that was the ultimate motive behind FF9's design, going back to "fantasy", and by "fantasy" meaning medieval. Frankly, FF8 was getting too realistic with the CGs, and the realistic characters and (sniper) guns, cars, scenarios and such. FF9 took a step back and featured more cartoonish characters and non/demi human characters and a more medieval setting, such as castles and villages. However, at the same time, Square tried to re-institute one of the lost medieval themes into FF8, sorceresses and magic, which I think was the only thing preventing the game from being an entirely science-fiction-esque game. And remember, there is a difference between fantasy (something made up from pure imagination) and science-fiction (alternate reality based on scientific knowledge and research). I just think the two themes clash with each other, and I find it hard to see a world so logically built, yet at the same time so illogical (as in magic).

And yes, I can envision the type of world FF9 is, because it's the same as all the previous medieval-based Final Fantasy (FF 1 - 5) games, a world of make belief, of "fantasy" like you said. The world is whatever you interpret it to be. :)

P.S. I don't mean to offend any of the FF8 players with this post. I just find the scenario a bit awkward for my taste. FF X will once again feature realistic characters and I look forward to it.

The weirdest thing: I've been playing FFIX and FFT for some time now on ePSXe and my PSOne (respectively), and when I played FFVIII recently again to show it to a friend (after a year), it all looked so . . . different. That always happens to me too. If I take a break from a game that looks good and play something with better graphics then I will lose some interest in the first game because I'm used to the better graphics. It has to be a really fun game for me to go back and playit when it looks old. That's exactly why I use ePSXe to make the PSX games look better.

Personally, the realistic graphics don't appeal to me at all, but neither does the comical look of FF9. I like the graphical style of FF7 and the earlier sprite-based games, with complex characters in battles and simplified characters in towns and world-maps. And even after playing the 32bit playstation games I can still go back to the NES FF games and enjoy them. The thing I miss most about the newer FF games(with the exception of FFT) is that they've lost the traditional look of the various classes. What ever happened to the silver-armoured Dragoon(Kain), red-haired/armoured fighter(FF1, FF3), the cloaked white-mage and the bald monk? I was hoping they'd come back in FF9, to which I was greatly disappointed. The emphasis seemed to have shifted to the summon monsters(AKA espers/guardian forces) and the fantasy's turned into sci fi. It just saddens me to know that those old games will never come back again.

Well, for all you people who bought the PC Version of FF8 (in which the music is inferior to the psx version of ff8) and are hoping for a comp version of ff9. I gots something that might tide you over. Its a Patch/mod that replaces the reguluar battle theme and world map theme with the ones from ff9; as well as several fixes for the music [No more bland generic drum set on a piece that should have had an orchestra drum set!:) ]

I created it myself, and i think i did a pretty good job. It'll be in winzip self-extracting form, and details about where to copy the files are in an enclosed readme file.

And....how do you attach a file to a post? i just previewed this and i don't see a link anywhere. so untill someone tells me how to get this thing attached, email me here (jbrown@linkline.com), and i'll send the file via normal email. Just put something in the subject line about wanting the file, ok??

-you do not use magic, you use it to boost your stats:(

-GF system is good, but there are a few ones and and it gets boring after a while

-great graphics (better than ff9 i think) but a sucky storyline


and for ff7 (great game too)

- the magic system it´s great, but visual effects are BAD

-GF system is bad, there are a lot, but are ugly

- very bad graphics, don´t you think? but a kickass storyline great huh?

So, for all, i would prefer a ff7 with ff8 graphics (enhanced of course!) than a ff10-ff20 or so

Ok, that was obvious. But what about the little monsters, ones that are dwarfed by humans. I don't think humans could be eaten by something smaller than them. (meaning their stomach or something is too small.)

I played FFVII 3 times, the last two back to back during the summer. My mom had to drag me away from the TV screen, to get me to sleep, but I'd sneak up 10 minutes later. I was obsessed with the game.FFVIII I didn't like that much.

yeah... i wuz also absent from university for > 2 weeks, playing FFVII the over and over..., i just couldn't get off my butt. I never really had that type of feeling with FFVIII, more so with FFIX, but that doesn't mean that they aren't xtreme games, hell yeah!. Also, I finished FFVII 6 times, FFVIII 4 times, FFIX 3 times, FFVI 1 time. I wonder, how many times I'll end up playing FFX... :D

Speaking of Chrono Trigger and its multiple endings, how many endings are there exactly? I keep hearing different numbers, but I thought it was 12.

i dunno bout you guys but i think the real chrono cross ending suck(the one where you have to use the chrono cross). Most of the other endings are great (esp. the one in the bar), but the real ending makes you feel like playing the game is kinda pointless... And yeah, this is an FF thread isn't it? hehe:D

And then mix up Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger when theres only 2 games in the "series"?! (I think it would be a real series if they called it Chrono Trigger 2).

Wrong , Chrono Trigger is the 1º and Chrono Cross the 3º , Radical Dreamers is the 2º , it was never released on US or Europe an JAP exclusive like Bahamut Lagoon or RS3 !

I believe that the Squaresoft had managed to put the theme from Radical Dreamer into the CC (chronopolis, when you're reading the letter, I believe). My personal favorite ending in CC is the one with the squid gut pasta. I thought the true ending of CC was a bit melancholistic. Back to FF... I heard that of the classic GFs, only Shiva, Ifrit, and Bahamut are returning in FFX. No more Odin... I wish they could have another Knights of Round. It kicks major ass.

Too bad they couldn't let you summon one of the bad guys from the previous games (like Sephiroth, etc.) in place of the GF's that aren't returning. While it might not be practical, it would be pretty cool to see.
