I used to have an MDaemon setup not too long ago. However, I got sick of how I'd drop offline every once in a while and mails would become undeliverable. So, I purchased a backup mail server and I basically use it as a primary now. :)

:) good idea but im not doing it any way any body can sign up for one of my e-mail addresses

MDaemon supported a nifty little add-on called WorldClient. It created a web interface where users could signup, login, check their mail, etc... Only problem IIRC, is that the server had to be local.
