Yep I had the same exact problem. I had a extended warrenty and I used that. But basically if you are hearing a sound besides the spinning sound, that each abnormal sound is scratching the disk and will eventually make the disk unplayable. And even if you resurface the disk it will just happen over and over.

Every once in a while, my PS2 reports that a disk is not the correct PS2 format and asks me to insert a valid PS2 format disc. Is this some kind of early sign? I just eject and try again and it works after that.

I took great care of PS2. And raekwon thachef there is no real to fix the problem. But what did find is that having on it's side will help, bu tultimately you have to spend and hour or reserting disks to get it to read the disk. To ShADoWFLaRe85 that problem is an early sign becuase for it started when it stoped playing xenogears, then chrono trigers, dvd's, and finaly all games.

thats a good excuse when they ask you why do you use emulators? don't you think so? If sony can't make a good system they really deserve to lose some money

They lose money with console development as it is. The real money is in the software.

Seriously though, I rented a PS2 a while back so I could play Silent Hill 2, and the same bloody thing happened.

DISCOVERY>>> i have revived one of the ps2s partielly (Itll read some dvds again......) ive been opening em up since the first one i looked at but this one got fixed by adjusting the dvd potentiometers slightly(giving it more electricity) it has started reading 80% of dvd games /movies i own..... it still wont read cds and ive tryed adjusting that potentiometer but oh well dvd bady!!!!
lets just see how long it will go before the laser goes "POOF" its about 150 ohms higher than the default
i tryed this on the other 2 systems but no go

Delita, I was playing without a memory card, and I was almost finished the game. I didn't really want to be hassled with the blasted thing anymore.

THat sucks. I hope it doesn't happen to mine. I've had it for half a year no and no problems so far. Mine is a European version, I don't know if it makes a difference. Well anyways no problems yet... sigh...
