Sometimes $5 a month isn't worth it for a personal site.

I seriously doubt that you'll find anything exactly like squall84 describes, though. jonys is right. If you want free, you'll most likey end up having to settle for ads.

I haven't messed with "free" hosts for a while now. Nezzar might be a good person to ask that question.

What ya babbling about?
With file size limits to 1 mb course you can.
Do a search in Yahoo! UK for "free host lists"
There are plenty of sites with free hosting lists and many have searches.
Hope that helps. :)

Unlimited...LOL. Such things don't exist my friend, and lately, these marketing ploys haven't gotten a host very far...

Well, being a cherished member of FWS, I'd have to say you get what you pay for...

Hey ridetrials, tripod.co.uk does PHP4 and mySQL [probably limited at that, but nevertheless..I don't know what they mean by PHP4U, but signing up doesn't really hurt]. :)

If it's for a personal site, and you don't mind the ads [topbanner], you can always try 0catch.com. I believe they still do 100 MB, no FP extensions, you'll have to pay for that.

From my experience, it's better to go with the larger hosts, even though you will face more restrictions--however, if the host can't cope with larger levels of abuse, [like crosswinds], then don't bother.

Paying for hosting is one of the best things you can do for yourself if you want a little more leeway and features, and if you can pay monthly, do so. I recommend going to some of the bigger hosts this time because they will be more likely to be around the next day. :)

[and whatever you do, avoid CI Host (scammed a user and got 25 grand in USD)/DonHost (and their resellers)/FastHosts (and their resellers)]

PHP4U is Tripod's custom version php based on php4.
Basically it's the same but with more custimization options around the security department.
At the moment Tripod say that they are doing major upgrades, etc and their servers keep going down (One at a time e.g. ftp, main site, members site), usually for about 8hrs. I still believe that it's money troubles as this has been going on since the end of February.

Sunhost seems promising though but I would love to get a paid host at phpwebhosting:
http://www.phpwebhosting.com :D

Untill then it's free hosts. :help::sad:

If you have a decent connection (ADSL is fine, as long as you're not expecting hundreds of visitors, and you make sure you update your IP every now and then) and you're willing to leave your machine on all day as well as configure Apache, then the best free host by far is 127.0.0.1. ;)

Hey, personally i think that a paid accoutn by your ISP would be the best thing but since u guys asked for somethihng free i'll tell you what i know: i curently use MSN communities and i am *VERY* satisfied with their services. they give u a chatroom, messageboard and 3 MBs of space for every e-mail adress. (that's why i have about 15 lol). to check out everything just go to their site. http://communities.msn.co.uk
also, check out my site for a preview. http://communities.msn.co.uk/TeenzForever

Suhost does not currently support php or MySQL.
They say that they will proberly install php on their servers sometime in the future but MySQL is very doubtfull.
It's a shame because they have a great service and the staff are very helpful but recently the servers have been going down. One time it was for a week.

Spaceports has a very poor user interface and upon enabling MySQL or PHP you get error messages come up and it has not yet been activated. In short it's very p*ss poor.

0.catch, freeservers, 10mb - 150mb and the rest of them are complete rubbish. I have used many an account with them before. You get popups, banners and god knows what else all over your site and file restrictions of 512kb - 220kb. NO FTP and a addridden interface. I mean what's the point of 512kb size limits and up to 150mb of space? Also there are bandwidth restrictions.

Tripod/Lycos seemed like a great service suprisingly after returning to find that I still had an account after about one and a half years(for my old site, made me laugh :D). PHP4U (Basically php 4.1), MySQL, 50mb of webspace, FTP and lots of help about web related stuff. I was quite shocked. However I wouldnt get a domain or payed hosting from there, even I cant make sense of all the costs there (Many hidden charges like most other places  ). You do get phpMyadmin which includes a MySQL database viewer (It's basically mysqlMyadmin with a theme) . This database viewer comes in quite handy and is a very good tool.
File size limits are around 2mb - 5mb (Not 100% sure) but seems quite reasonable. You get a banner on your site but this is only for 10secs. If you run your site in php most of the time the banner script will fail so it becomes banner free (I laughed at this when I converted my site :D ). However you do experience many slowdowns now and again but server down times seem to have stopped for now....

Geocities (UK) is what I use for my non-php/MySQL orientated site. It's a fair but extremely basic service. You get FTP but no php or MySQL. 12-15mb (Depending on when you join) and has a fairly fast server. It short this one's reliable but basic.

Thats my reviews and this is from a lot of experience with free hosts. ;)

Eddy_skater I just checked your website man...but one problem is that if you want to make a professional site then you might have to use some even better host then MSN....why? cause msn communities are not offering other good things which other might be looking for....by the way thanks for the reference...;)

You betta settle with a reliable web server that has ads. These free no-ads sites are going to start to shut down like hotcakes
